Thoughts On Pocket Carry

WildbeticangetitoutfasterthanmostpeoplecandrawtheirIWBsAlaska
Bottom line is it doesn`t matter which choice of carry we choose, we need to practice drawing from that mode. Also, as mentioned before if I`m carrying in my jacket pocket and circumstances warrant, I`ll bypass the draw step with the first shot. Its hard to out-draw(a same as) already drawn gun.
I still maintain that there are better carry options than pocket carry. This is my opinion to which I am entitled.
The problem with opinion threads is the fact that someone posts their opinion and if its not backed up with anything other than other peoples opinion(pro or con) and no facts to back-up either, nothing constructive comes out of the thread. People have carried in many different ways over the years , have become very efficient and comfortable with their choice. So for me to state a certain way of carry is not good or the least acceptable (esp. not knowing your daily routine) without some facts to back it up, the' cavalier' attitude is to be expected. After all its an opinion and we all differ. Give me some facts as to the reason I should`nt pocket carry or at least make me think about changing and I`ll think about it. This is a good thread but as of yet I haven`t seen the facts posted to substantiate that pocket carry is the worse or best way to carry. Just opinions.

Locked car doors and locks that close automatically have done very little to reduce the numbers of car jackings that take place in many major cities every day.

LOL...got any stats about that?

WILDALASKA may take a cavalier attitude towards what is a very real problem in the the more populated urban areas of the lower 48--that is, car jackings and home invasions take place many times each and every day.

Bullupucky and nothing to do with POCKET CARRY

There have been several home invasions in my little city recently which have resulted in the innocent being shot and killed and in at least two cases where the perp has been shot by the home defender.

And the realtionship, even assuming the fact of your assertion, rationally relates to pocket carry in what fashion?

I still maintain that there are better carry options than pocket carry. This my opinion to which I am entitled.

You are entitled to have the opinion that Barney Frank is handsome and intelligent too:p

Here: In my opinion, for the average armed citizen, who does not reside in high crime areas where it may be necessary to carry a larger firearm and who realizes its limitations (ie in the car, where some of us who pocket carry have another gun or toss it on the seatt), Pocket carry is superior to IWBand Shoulder carry and as good as OWB. With practice you can draw as fast or faster and you have the TACTICAL ADVANTAGE when someone has the drop on you (see wallet example above)

Pocket Carry:

:p I carry my little "pocket rocket" (Rohrbaugh .380) with me lots of places (summer= shorts, T-shirts, etc). Never had one problem with it getting dirty, etc. and its always available to me if needed. No one ever has the slightest idea it is there or that I am carrying. Thats the way I like it. At any rate, it works great for me as it is small, light and should do the job if ever called upon.

humbly disagree with the OP; I pocket carry almost exclusively and have since I got my CHL five years ago ... either a Kahr PM9 or a S&W 637 snubbie .. about eight months out of the year, Texas is an oven ... I wear tank tops or t-shirts exclusively, along with cargo shorts, perfect pockets for carry ... now here's the magic part -- PRACTICE!!! I take 5-10 minutes every morning after I get dressed ... I unload whatever gun I'm carrying that day and do about 20-30 draws from concealment ... I have no trouble getting my guns out fast, smoothly and minus the holster, either a Nemesis or a Mika's (for the PM9). also, I don't carry a mouse gun, probably because I started carrying before the .380 boom ... also, consider that when you're out, you can have your hand in your pocket, cutting tons of time from the draw portion of the program, and nobody's the wiser ... I have OWB holsters for both guns and the Kimber UCII I carry in cooler weather, but prefer pocket carry ... there are obviously some drawbacks, but there are drawbacks to almost any kind of carry you choose ... pocket works for me ...

There are people who have one response to a threat which is: pull out your gun. I regard this as being a one-trick pony. If you carry a gun on your belt, this is pretty much all you can do, because any wrestling will quickly bring your gun into the situation. This is bad for a variety of reasons, one of which is the fact that shooting unarmed people (despite half the recommendations on this BB) is a truly bad idea.

Pocket carry has a number of tactical advantages. One of them is that it's very secure and you can do quite a bit of grappling without your gun becoming a conversation piece. I've expressed this opinion before on this BB and I have gotten quite a few "rebuttals" that bolstered my assertion (although the people making the rebuttals didn't seem to realize this).

Other tactical advantages of pocket carry include reliability of concealment and the ability to have your gun in your hand without starting a gunfight.

I pocket carry...only in pockets carry holsters. It is safer.
An example of unsafe pocket carry:

"Man urinating in South Bend alley accidentally shoots self

STAFF REPORT

SOUTH BEND — Police say a man who went to the hospital Wednesday morning with a gunshot wound accidentally shot himself.

The 21-year-old man told police he had stopped to urinate in an alley between Vassar and Humboldt streets just before 3:30 a.m., when his gun accidentally discharged.

The man, who has a permit to carry the gun, took himself to the hospital, where police were called.

Police say the gun was apparently in the man's pocket, as there was no bullet hole on the outside of his jeans.

The bullet went through the man's upper thigh and exited below his knee. The injury is not expected to be life-threatening. "

Maybe he grabbed something wrong, who knows.:D

I carry in the pocket almost all of the time. There are situations where I see it can be a problem but they are outweighed by the positives. I can't leave a loaded gun around the house because I have 10 and 15 year old girls. Both have been trained but I just can't leave it around. My only other choice is to unload and lock it up. At least in my pocket it is under my control. When in a vehicle it is mostly out of the pocket and accessible. Exceptions would be when my wife is sitting next to me and the presence of a gun within her reach poses a legal issue (AZ). She doesn't have her CCW (yet). Leaving it in the driver’s door pocket is an option but has ramifications if she has to drive the vehicle before I can retrieve my weapon. The best answer here is for her to get her CCW if for no other reason to make travel easier.

My biggest concern is really related situational awareness. If unaware of a threat and met up with the words "empty your pockets" I would be in a situation that has no good outcome. By emptying my pocket I would be introducing a gun into the situation. That's just a bad situation and in the endless possibilities of what happens next, most of the outcomes are not good.

In general if all that is at stake is my wallet, the criminal will be able to walk away, probably with my wallet. I don't own anything that is worth a life, even a criminal’s life. Now if forced to expose my weapon it would depend on what happens next. I have planned in my mind what to do in each of the possible situations that I can think of. Few of the options are good in that situation. But this situation is so far down the decision making process I just don't see it as a more likely position to be in. Not in my area and not with the threat I face as I perceive it. This is a compromise for sure.

Like most decisions we make, our carry method is a series of compromises. I certainly understand the negatives of the way I carry. In my mind the positives outweigh the negatives. As a compromise I think pocket carry is very effective. If I lived in a different area and the threat was different I can see changing my carry method.

Andrews Leather makes a neat back pocket holster that looks like a wallet. I've carried a Beretta 21 in it for years as well as a NAA .32 and have never had a problem drawing either weapon (practicing of course).

The only problem with pocket holsters that I've experienced in hot climates is sweat. If you sweat al lot like me you really have to stay on top of the guns finish, ammo viability, etc... I think the guys on the man show had a funny solution to this if anyone saw it, "Manpons"!:D

What other form of carry affords one the ability to have ones hand on their gun without it looking like he is "reaching" for it? With pocket carry you can leave the store and walk to the car with your hand right on your gun and no one the wiser. You'd look pretty stupid walking around with your hand shoved around your backside all the time. And if you need more than that .380........never mind, those who think they need 20 rounds of 9, a BUG and a last ditch gun are beyond help.

I pocket carry a KT P32 as BUG to a .45 ACP primary, generally. It is always in my back pocket. It will serve as primary only if I have to rush out of the house before I don the primary. As was said, better than nothing.

Taking it out every couple weeks and cleaning it keeps it working properly. But, I've never seen anything that would keep it from functioning.

Gunmeister: While I agree that while sitting and or driving, pocket carry
is not the best option; nothing says one cannot move the gun to another form of carry while engaged activities that require sitting. One can also clean their pocket and gun as required to reduce lint issues.

Reminds of that interview/press conference video posted on this forum with a guy who did have to use is pistol in self-defense. As a recall, the the BG already had a shotgun in the guy's face, and was demanding money. The concealed carrying fellow reached for his pocket, with the BG probably thinking he was going for his wallet, and instead, out came a .380, the BG gets shot, scrambles away and is driven to the hospital by his accomplice.

A good deal of it certainly came down to luck, with the BG either not being attentive enough to notice what actually was being pulled from the pocket and not smart enough to consider that the guy could be armed and carrying in such a way. Nor was the attacker determined enough to persist with with the attack after being shot. However, if instead the law-abiding fellow was carrying IWB holster positioned for cross-draw and attempted to pull his gun in the same situation, it seems more likely the BG would have noticed, panicked and fired his shotgun.

I have pocket carried for 26+ years and have had no problems doing so. I have changed guns from a 21+oz 38taurus and tomcat to a pf-9 is a main carry and it fits the best of any that i have had. I also have ultra lite 38 that will rest there sometimes. Weight is close to the same and they both set the same in my pocket . Both use di Santi holsters. I do have many handguns but most will never be carried except to hunt as to weight and or size. I am not one to pack a full size around. In the car i will pull it part way out and it is accessable from there. I wear mainly overalls or jeans and tee shirts so carry'n in my waist has never been a real concept. I even hate to wear a slip-on rig for matches.

I carry a 357 spurless revolver in my winter coat pocket while walking...Drawing not necessary...it will make a mess of the coat....But an unpleasant surprise to the BG when he discovers a 357 round coursing through his gut....ouch that smarts.

'A bug in a rug' I carry SOB, don't carry a BUG, if I did it would be no bigger than a .380. No holster, just dropped in the pocket. I don't understand anyone wanting to carry in a ankle holster, or in a "pocket holster" but to each is own.;)

Let me start by sayin' that the author of this thread knows what he's talkin' about. I teach self-defense pistol combat classes, and as of late more and more of my students show up to class with these pathedic little .32's and .380s' or pocket guns.

Although my "little pathetic .380" is probably NOT the ideal caliber for self defense, I encourage anyone who feels it is "pathetic" to volunteer for 6 rounds in the chest and then tell me how bad it is. ANY gun is adequate if the operator is trained, aware and committed to its use.

Glad I don't have to take any classes from this "expert".

pocket carry

Pocket carry is a great way to carry when you can't carry a larger weapon.
I always keep my car doors locked, so I don't worry about having my doors yanked open.
Drawing from the pocket is quite easy if one practices. My trick is to keep my pinkie finger outside the pocket, preventing me from making a fist inside while I draw.

My Seecamp in a pocket holster in my right back pocket looks like a wallet. Totally deep cover, tango tango
