This is bad...

My friend, welcome to the dichotomy of gun ownership...the pleasure of owning and shooting them paired with pain of feeding them.

A good .22 is a great investment, and then a reloading setup.

Me too!!!

I recently bought my first pistol. I am in NY and it took almost a year and I got my CCW permit. I bought a SW .357 J frame with a 3 inch barrel.

I went to Gander Mountain and bought a box of .357 magnums and .38 specials. OMG. 357's kick like a mother!

The guy who sold me the ammo didn't let me know that there are different kinds. I ended up with something that looks like it has a half jacketed bullet with a flat top on it. Not a hollow point. I took a Utah gun class and they said you should use HP for self defense to prevent over penetration.

Does anyone have a recommendation for what I should buy? I am absolutely a green horn and I have NO idea what to get. There seems to be a multitude of grains etc.

Also, what gun should I buy next!!!! I think I now have the illness...

It feels AWESOME to be able to be a member of the CCW crowd now!

Hi, my name is Darrin, and I am also a gunaholic.

Never owned a gun before November, 2011. I am 47 years and 1 month old.

Bought an inexpensive H&R Pardner Pump 12 GA. for home defense and loved shooting it.

Then I found out that the only place to shoot it costs 25 bucks an hour, Gander Mountain.

1 week later I bought an inexpensive S&W 22a .22 pistol, loved shooting it. Found a deal on line and got 5000 rounds for 175, including shipping.

Decided I needed something bigger for when my CCW license comes in(mailed paperwork right before Christmas). Went to the store on Dec 24 with some friends and bought a used Beretta 92FS Compact 9 mm. I love it. On Dec 27 went back to store with my wife and bought her a S7W M&P Compact 9mm, she loves it.

In two months I went from zero to four, now I am looking for a rifle, but don't have any idea what I want. I am thinking either a .22 or a 30.06, but not 100% sure. I also think I want a bolt action rifle, cause I think they are cool. :D

ETA: Two weeks ago, after going to the county range 5 times at 10 bucks a shot (great deal, no time limit), I found out that county employees shoot for free. I work for the county school board, good enough for them. Now if they only supplied 9mm ammo for free.

OMG. 357's kick like a mother!
Well, that just means you need to find a good N-Frame to shoot them through. Then, for winter carry, a nice K-Frame.

I also suggest a nice 6" K-38 for target work, and one in .22 goes without saying.

You'll also want a barbecue gun with nice bluing or nickel.

Trust me, it never ends. Just embrace it.

You have been exposed to a disease, not unlike a gambling addiction, and nearly impossible to stop. Just keep within excess budget and discretionary spending. LOL.

.22 LR for cheap shooting is a good idea. A revolver is always a good idea, but I'ld use the 92FS for the home gun and just decide on a carry gun.

Gunitis strikes again!!!!

Its like aids of the gun world :) only it wont killyou. Just occasionally **** off the wife/girlfriend when u start bringing home guns like a cat brings home small critters... It has no cure but I keep my gunitis in check with plenty of 22 and the occasional new toy... enjoy and welcome to the club.

Jewelry

When i purchased my pistol, the guy behind the counter called it my new toy. Another guy in the store said "Bro, guns are just jewelry for men."

That being said, I went to the gun store yesterday and learned that you shouldn't put two guns in the same safe. They WILL breed.

Don't feel bad for wanting more. I go into gun stores all the time just to window shop. I'm sure we all do.

What have I gotten myself into?

And you did it with thought and planning, not as a heritage like us "lifers". My first rifle was a Winchester Model 74 22 I was given by my grandpa 55 years ago at the age of 10. My first hand gun a High standard HD Military, Again from my grandpa 4 years later. Grandpa was great, and I still have, and shoot both!

Glad to hear you love your 92fs. I would really like one of those. Someday I might get one.

I agree, that next you need a .22lr pistol. You also need a .22lr rifle.

Then yes, a .357 loaded with .38's for beside the bed would be great. I like that idea because you can keep a 6 gun loaded for years and never have to worry about magazine springs.

Then sure, you'll need something that is practical to carry.

Dont forget a shotgun.

The way I see it, it's probably best to make sure you own a gun for every possible need or want, that way your not trying to make one gun do everything, because you have guns for everything. It's really a good time, and it's money well spent. If you take care of your guns, they will always maintain a decent value.

Why buy a flat screen TV when you can buy yourself a Nice 1911 instead? ;) Especially when a $1200 flat screen TV will only be worth $300 in 4 or 5 years, and a $1200 1911 would probably be worth $1000.

Or why buy a brand new car at $20,000 when it will only be worth $10,000 in 5 years, when you could have spent $10,000 on a good used car and another $10,000 on AWESOME GUNS!!!!:D

lol... anyway, welcome to the club. Let us know what you buy next :)

Yep, when I started with my first handgun, it was actually only days before I needed another. Then I needed a .22 for cheap practice, so within 3 months I had gone from 1 to 3.

Today, I have at least 20 handguns, and another half dozen rifles and shotguns.

Rationally, they are like tools. You don't have just one screwdriver or one hammer do you? Of course not.

Though I admit my basic needs were covered years ago. I just love them and want more ... you know, the whole "you can never have just one potato chip" analogy.

It's a disease, no doubt about it. My wife's just as infected, but she's in denial!

I've bought .22 conversions for the handguns we shoot most often. An excellent investment!

Friar Whently

when your addiction gets to the point where you start keeping a bottle of Hoppe's 9 on the bathroom shelf next to your toothbrush always remember you have the best support group in the world here at TFL..we're here for ya bro.. :D

And remember not to get the Hoppe's mixed up with the toothpaste! Don't ask how I know this, but that stuff burns the tongue something awful.

Whatever you do, DON'T BUY A 1911! They are worse than walking into a Donkin Donuts......
I just bought 2 more 1911's and another 3rd gen S&W this week. Fortunately the clinic is open 24\7.

You're sick, man... just sick. Welcome to the illness. Oh, and don't listen to the 1911 folk... those people are the craziest of us all. I don't own a 1911 and probably never will because I'll never be THAT nutz!!

I look at guns as an investment. I don't have a boat or play golf so a man has to have something to invest in. If you get them "on sale" the women in your life don't seem to mind near as much. You can then save soooo much money if you reload, or at least you tell the women that tale. You'll never save a dime but don't let the secret out. Be glad you bought a Beretta and not a 1911. Those things multiply faster than rabbits.

Welcome to the forum, enjoy.
