The PPQ M2's goofy looks

Again, I KNOW this is HIGHLY subjective and I know the PPQ M2 is an exceptional pistol with awesome trigger, but I just can't get past its goofy,
odd looks.
The HUGE squared off trigger guard, the unnecessarily large slide lock and the
strange, odd grips just make the whole pistol look rather goofy, at least to my
eyes!
Even You Tube's Hickok45 said the grips are "hideous" and "ugly".

So, for purely looks, I still have to go with the M&P and the FNS-9.

It's one of Walther's best designs ever & the ergonomics are excellent. Trigger too.

I can get past the looks. :)

If you want goofy looking check out the Walther PPX. It looks odd but boy does it shoot. The grip looks like it has a "knee" but fits my hand great. I like it so much I bought 2 of them. Now if you want pretty get a 1911.

The PPQ was designed to be a practical pistol...

Walther (I am sure) wanted overall clean lines and general pleasing appearance, to go along with the practicality, and would have worked towards that... But they were more focused on actual functionality, and ergonomic concerns, over aesthetics.

Most things on the pistol seem to have purpose... Even some aesthetic choices have practical overtones. (grip texture, serrations, etc)

So its all eye of the beholder.

I have bought pistols based on mostly aesthetic reasons... But any pistol I bought with defensive use in mind, Practical matters took precedence over aesthetic.

If I managed to get practical and good looking... then all the better. I feel many modern pistols deliver both reasonably well.

It's looks are all the more strange when you consider that it is basically a P99 with a new trigger group, and the P99 is probably the best-looking polymer service pistol ever designed.

Again I reference the P99. It is every bit as practical as the PPQ and every bit as functional. In fact some features of the P99 are MORE practical than those of the PPQ, such as the scalloped front end of the slide that allows press-checks and easier re-holstering than the overdone front slide serrations of the PPQ, and the superior paddle mag release versus the lumpy button of the PPQ M2.

About the only increase in functionality the PPQ's aesthetics offer over the P99 is the additional flexibility of Picatinny rail of PPQ the versus the Universal rail of the 2nd-gen P99. Of course, Glock and others have made due just fine with the Universal rail for a good many years now.

I don't find the PPQ2 M2 odd or goofy looking at all. In fact, I think it looks quite impressive.
Now for goofy, and odd, just turn to Beretta's offerings like the NANO, and especially PX4 Storm!

ok

The rounded off trigger guard on the M&P make the pistol look less blocky and more streamlined and elegant.

IF I were having some kind of ergonomics issue with what I shoot now, maybe the PPQ would be an option, but I'm not so for me the new Walther is just too goofy for me to take seriously. (The button mag release is the only feature I like about the M2, as I have never warmed up to the paddle releases on the 99, etc.)

I'm sure the folks at Walther really like it though. :D

I'd imagine that the trigger guard is large to accommodate the gloves of special force units operating in the arctic circle. Right? :D

Or it's just bad design.

No joke about the gloves though. I'm sure that is a problem on other pistols with cold weather and the police or military.

The Ugly PPQ ?

Really? Having bought and traded handguns for over 50yrs, searching for 'that' semi auto for my feel and my taste, I finally I found her!
The Walther PPQ-2! Now, close your eyes...for you see, I associate handling her with....don't open your eyes...slow dancing with a Plain Jane lady. I just close my eyes, hold her firmly while listening to a nice slow 50's song, and just DANCE! Gosh! Feel it?....With her perfect grip, she dances....er, shoots far better than I could ever imagine! Now there, isn't that better?

To me the Walther PPQ is pretty decent looking.

I find the M&P pretty ugly and the SIG P320 about the ugliest but I know it is supposed to be a great shooter.

In any case I am much more interested in results.

People buy glocks....that alone should tell you something about looks.

While I like a stylish gun (even in plastic) I really don't mind a funky looking pistol if there's engineering purpose behind the looks.

I personally think the looks of the M&P and CZ Ps are the best of the plastic stuff out there.

While I totally, completely agree with it's horrendous, ugly looks... makes me laugh to compare other Tupperware pistols to it for "looks."

Every Tupperware pistol looks like something I would flush -- with a plunger at the ready. First time I ever saw a Glock: HURL. An XD? Couldn't believe that someone out-uglied a Glock.

Polymer handguns couldn't look any worse if they had chunks of corn stuck in them.

How do you survive going to a range? Or do you just avert your eyes?

Survive what?
I even own some of these. One of my favorite handguns and my best 9mm happens to be QUITE ugly. And my daily carry is a Glock.

I absolutely enjoy fine looking handguns but it doesn't to be good looking to be useful or enjoyed.

Lots of room in my safe. And either way, why on Earth would I care what other folks at the range choose to shoot & own?

Your description was so intense it made it seem like you could barely stand the sight of a polymer pistol.

That description is not off-base. From day one, handguns have always been a full, visceral experience. I cannot stop looking at an attractive handgun. I'll stare at it.

The PPQ M2 is a terrific pistol and it is extremely likely to be my next EDC. Likely within the next year. But wow, awful to look at, for sure.

Gotcha. It's just never been that way for me. I'd have a hard time picking any semiauto that I think is the most attractive. It's not that I'm 100% utilitarian, just in this area it's not something I notice a lot.

In my defense, I certainly do NOT drop in to threads expressly populated with fans of "x" simply to trash the way "x" looks. This thread carries the subject line that the PPQ M2 is ugly. And even that wasn't going to spur me on to post.

But when the OP's comparisons are directly to other trainwreck-ugly tupperware, THAT was enough to make me wish to add my take.

There isn't much I own that is uglier than my daily carry, EDC since October of 2008. But one thing I have noticed is that pictures of my Glock 29 are truly even uglier than the pistol itself.

I can draw pretty pictures with it, though.
