If we're talking about the classic form of a submachinegun, i.e., pistol caliber, two handed weapon - my vote is either the MP5 or the Uzi.
The MP5 for all the real, bad guy, tactical operations.
The Uzi for us civilian recreational shooters. While I like the MP5, transferable sear conversions are not as reliable as factory guns. A Vector Arms Uzi will run like a top all afternoon.
