The best Revolver you ever owned?

This being entirely subjective: the best balance I've found in revolvers have been with 4" barrels.

From what I understand, one could trade a 3.5" Model 27 for a Beverly Hills mansion.

KyJim,

The Model 27 of your is one beautiful revolver.

I know Python guys think that that's the most beautiful revolver, and it is a good looking revolver, but in my wholly subjective opinion, I'd go with a Model 27.

My two favorites are the first two I ever bought! ;)
Ruger Super Blackhawk .357 Convertable and my S&W Model 37 Chief Special.
Both were purchased back in the 70's, one I purchased for hunting and the second for CCW.
Still have them yet today and would never think about selling them!

I own both the Python and the 686 smith and Wesson with the 6" barrels and I consider the Smith and Wesson the better gun after 30+ years of shooting it, it just gets better.

While I've owned many Smiths and Rugers over the years, there is one special gun that I wanted from the very first. The early 60's were my college days, and I was an avid reader of Elmer Keith...and shared his affection for the .44 Special...all the caliber reasonably needed in the lower 48 and arguably the most accurate caliber of all time.

Fast forward to the 70's and Skeeter Skelton became my gun author of choice (still is for that matter). His attempts to get Colt to re-introduce the SAA in .44 Special were grist to my mill. Later he converted used Smith .357's (M28's if memory serves) to that most useful of all calibers. Cost and the long waiting time to get the work done prevented me from attaining my goal.

Finally in the late 70's I found a new Colt SAA, a 5-1/2" model, that satisfied my longing for a while. It was and is an extremely accurate handgun and resides in my #1 son's gun safe. I gave it to him for his 18th birthday. (He's 47 now).

So....when Ruger/Lipsey's combined their efforts to make a .44 Special Blackhawk Flat Top, I was just about first in line to get one. I now have both lengths in the blued model plus the 4-5/8" SS model...all are great shooters, but that first 4-5/8" blued model remains my favorite. It's probably the most accurate hand gun I've ever owned. Here it is with one of my first targets shot from a sitting, long range Keith position at 25 yds. The gun's sporting a pair of my home made stocks as well. Best Regards, Rod

My 1961 6" Royal Blue Python would be my favorite, with the absolute best finish. I've never shot this one, I'm the third owner, and other than Colt, I don't think it's ever been fired. I know the second owner stated he didn't fire it, and he had it 25 years.

The 1974 4" RB Python would be #2, and it shoots like a dream. Compared to the same vintage 27-2 that I bought for my son, the Colt trigger is just soooooo much smoother, and while the 27 is a fine, fine firearm, I just don't think it compares to either Python in fit, finish or refinement.

My current dash 642 is the most used, my 17-4 is a tack driver, and the bird's head HRR and 6" Anaconda are the most fun.

I liked my first release 3" .327 sp101, about the perfect size, but heavy, carry piece when the factory grips were tossed. Should've kept it. Also miss my 4" 1985ish 686 and 629 Classic DX. But was young and dumb.

As it is, I need more revolvers. 6 just isn't enough.

It was a beast, but I had a Ruger Blackhawk in 44 mag that was my favorite.
I have had nothing but really bad luck with everything S&W I've ever owned which is unfortunate.

Best??? How about favorite instead.
A Ruger SBH 5.5" barrel .44 Magnum.

I think you have it right. My favorite gun is not my best. My favorite motorcycle is not my best. My favorite of anything is usually not my best. You save your best for special occasions but you use your favorite frequently.

Favorite overall: probably my 7.5" Super Blackhawk 44 magnum. It is a 3-screw from 1970 or so.

Most accurate: probably my Single Six in 22lr

For SD: any decent 4" 357

For CC: I have a feeling it will end up being the LCR I picked up just today. :)

Best? Dunno. My S&W 686 4", Ruger GP100 6", S&W 627 5", and S&W 625 4" are all up there and I can't decide between them.

But my favorite? My S&W 617 .22LR revolver. It is just a sweet, fun, dead-on accurate gun with a fantastic trigger. My "hand rifle."

I guess my Python was the prettiest one I've had, but as far as shooting goes, my S&W 28 with a target hammer and trigger, along with an action job was the best. It wasn't really pretty, it was old when I bought it at a Las Vegas pawn shop in 1980. It's one of the few guns I've had that I really regretted selling. I didn't miss the Python at all, and I still don't.

The best one I own right now is a Dan Wesson 715 with a 6" barrel in near mint condition. On top of it being an awesome gun, it's one of the cheapest revolvers I've ever bought.

These is all the revolvers I've ever owned. The first one I sold a number of years ago and regretted it ever since. The last two will stay until my two sons have to decide who gets what.
Favorite one??? Like trying to pick which son I love the most!
Each one is different and those differences are why I like both of them the best..................just like my boys.

Ruger single six(gone )
Ruger Security Six .357 mag
Smith and Wesson 617

H&R model 929 .22, I have owned this for nearly forty years. I can't even begin to fathom how many rounds I have put through it. When I was younger it was my constant companion, trapping, fishing, hunting in any weather. Never failed me.

I am a Colt revolver person, but the best revolver I have ever had is my 1955 S&W K22 with Bushnell bantam 1.2X scope and Smith and Wesson 21 36 holster modified to take the scope, all of $250 on a gunshow table in 1995. I did not dicker on the price. It was love at first sight.

It is a magic gun that shoots smaller groups than the cross hairs are shaking around from a rest. It kills ground squirrels.

My Smith's and Wesson's Model 67-1 "Combat Masterpiece" revolving belt pistol of special caliber. A sweet shooter to be sure.

Wow! Some very nice revolvers are depicted in this thread. I only have one wheel gun so I guess you could say it's my favorite revolver but it sees more duty than any semi-auto I own. No, that's not an obscene gesture either.

best, as in most useful? taurus model 85 steel 38 snubbie that i bought gently used in mid 1980s. it saved me from an urban carjacking and very quietly protected my family for 30 years in very antigun places.

best, as in most accurate? used ruger single six 5.5" shooting 22wmr out of an after market 8 shot cylinder by story. 1.5" bullseye groups at 60'. for my tired old eyes that is scary accurate.
