The almighty .45 acp.

Personally I like the .45 ACP and don't like the 9MM, not saying a 9 won't work. I just don't like them.

I am of the opinion that in an air breathing animal, blood loss is a 100% positive kill mechanism. If it breathes, and it bleeds, if it bleeds enough it will stop breathing. I believe that the bigger the drain hole, the quicker an animal will bleed out.
All of which has very little to do with self defense.

Don't let all the naysayin' drag you down.

Your post was that you found something that excited you and you wanted to share it.

These kinds of eye opening experiences is what keeps us interested in our hobbies and keeps us open to new ideas.

I am older now and don't find these aha moments as often because I have been around so long. So I found it interesting that you found it interesting.

I think we can all agree that practice and proficiency is more important than caliber.

So back to your post, I agree with you that HST 45 ammo a terrific self defense choice of ammo.

What recently gave me my 'aha' moment with this 45 caliber was Buffalo Bore +P in a carbine. Speed and energy move to 44 magnum ranges.

https://ballisticsbytheinch.wordpress.com/2015/06/16/some-super-performance-out-of-a-cx4-storm/

So now, I just need you to get excited about that too, buy a carbine and test it in your water jugs for comparison. :-)

Why is it that the the 9mm fans always compare 9mm +P ammo to 45 ACP standard velocity ammo?

Usually 9mm +P is more common than 45ACP +P. That said the more recent tests I've seen show that standard pressure 9mm doesn't lose much at all to +P. I wonder if faster burning powders help?

45ACP -v- Pay Phone

Many years ago as noted by the old phone booth, a gentleman from Mid-Town got into an argument in a phone booth. Said inDUHvidual stepped out of the booth and fired a couple of rounds from his 45ACP pistol at the phone, hitting the change collection box. One or a part of a round ricochet back at him and the wound got him a trip to the ER.
Just sayin .

I've said it before, others have said it here, the choice of gun and the ability to use it well matter more than the caliber.

Discussing 9mm vs. .45acp cartridge performance alone is simply a matter of specs, and does NOT equate directly to field performance. Sure, there is a connection, but the 9mm does not do this, or that, better or worse simply because it is the newest, hottest +p+ whomper stomper 9mm there is.

IF you are going to hold one up above the other, 9mm vs. .45, based on the cartridge alone, then level the rest of the playing field, or the discussion is pointless.

Here's your defensive weapon, a single shot T/C Contender with a 6" barrel (for convenience ). You have two barrels, one in 9mm Luger, one in .45ACP. Which one do you choose??? why?

^ that's not remotely realistic. Who is going to use a single shot pistol for defense? I get the idea of "all else being equal", but it isn't. The same pistol in 9mm can hold more than if it was in 45ACP. You can't magically wave that reality away.

I can't believe we've gone down this road once again. I've been here for a lot less than many and even I have zero desire to debate calibers. The OP was about the performance of Federal HST in 45 ACP. It performs very well. What more is there to say?

I switched to nothing but .45 more than 10 years ago... only this last year did I add some mm's, 9 & 10.

I am now getting old But Uncle Sam gave me a 45 to use years ago and I grew fond of that caliber and pistol over years. I have 9mm and 38 spl. But 45 still in time of possible trouble. I go to.

Guess a guy in Homer, AK had a confrontation with a brown bear. Got off five shots with his 10mm. Two hit the bear and stopped it, one hit his foot as he tripped backing up. The one in his foot is another argument for the 9mm. Would've just bounced off and left a bruise :)

I have been watching the stopping power issue for 49 years. from what I have seen, all from 22 Cal through 12 gauge work and all have failed. Depends on where the bg is hit, his determination, drugs?, etc.
The 9mm is not real pleasure to shoot from pocket size guns, IMO.
The 45ACP from a full sized 1911 is better from recoil, and accuracy as the weight and size helps a lot.
I no longer follow what is popular from the military nor police as many are changing calibers from logistics, agreements, and budgets.
Use what ever you feel comfortable with and don't change calibers as women change hair color for no good reason

A .45 cannot drop a charging African elephant, so I think it's useless. A 9 9mm has twice as many rounds and twice as many opportunities to drop a charging elephant right where it stands. I hunt elephant with a bow. If it worked for old Fred, that's good enough for me.

Use whatever you wish. I own both .45acp and 9mm. I am a much better shot with both of my .45's than I am with my 9mm. It may very well be the platform. It may not. All I know is for right now .45acp is my choice and in the future 9mm, or something else, may be.

It's great as long as you can get the bad guy to stand in one place long enough for it to get there.

Not many guys can move at 850 feet per second. If we find one notify the Olympics committee:D
