The 'AK-47' of handguns

The reason I didn't pick the Browning Hi-Power is because it is far too refined compared to an AK. A good BHP is like a Swiss watch: the slide is smooth as silk, the trigger is crisp and fairly light; the ergonomics are perfect, the finish is a smooth shiny blue and they are tight fitting guns.

thanks again for all the input guys :)

I'm not looking at a glock anymore, they just aren't comfortable for me to handle. the ergonomics just dont fit my hand that well.

I did find a pretty sweet revolver though, the Ruger GP100... the 4 inch barrel, not the monster, almost 3 pound, 6 inch beast.

So its down to the SA 1911, and the Ruger at this point.

The AK of pistols?

Well that would be a pistol AK.

wouldn't a CZ-75 be the "ak" of handguns? the both are Russian. and both smile at you no matter what you throw down their throats

(yes i know the CZ is Czech, but thats old Russia so... yeah!)

Glock

I know you ruled it out already, but for me to honestly answer:
What would be considered the AK 47 of the handgun world?
For all the reasons previously listed with the additional shared label of "Evil", my answer has to be Glock.

I hear many good things about the CZ's.
I am going to check out the CZ 97, the 45. All the reviews I have read for it state one thing, Its BIG. :D

11+1 Mec Gar. Not too much sticking out either.

Amen. I have two 10 rounders myself, they're nice. Working on putting base pads on them right now so I can use them for spare carry mags.

CZ is Czech, but thats old Russia so... yeah!

It's former Communist Eastern Bloc, not USSR. That would be like saying every ally the US has is part of the US.

factors to consider:

Reliability
ease of maintenance
Toughness
Put-Down-Power
Does not necessarily need to be Russian :P

There's no such thing as "put-down-power" (unless we're talking about an award for the best player of the "yo mama" game).

A 9mm Glock is probably the gun that best meets the rest of your criteria collectively (i.e. I think you'd have a hard time arguing successfully that many, if any, other guns out there are better in all of the relevant areas).

Reliability, Ease of Maintenance, Toughness.

Ruger Blackhawk, Tokarev TT33, or the HS2000. The HS2000 (refined models known as XD9s) took the "Glock Challenge" with only 17K rounds through the pipe first.
