The #1 reason you carry the semi/wheel gun you do

I think this might be a fun thread. There have been several threads I've read recently debating the superiority of the semi/revolver. What are the pros/cons of each. Which should we carry. It's just silly to carry _____ instead of_____, yada yada yada. So let's not start this thread of with an argument. Just state what gun you carry, and the NUMBER ONE reason why. Not a list. Not the pros and cons. Just name your gun and what's the number one reason in your mind for carrying the gun.

I'm looking forward to this. Hope everyone enjoys.

.357 Magnum Ruger SP-101 DAO. Easy carry in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster. Why? Reliablity first and foremost. Pull the trigger and it will fire 100% of the time.

Cooler months when I wear more layers - G19 reliability, accessories, fit and weight.

Hotter months - Taurus TCP thin, light and easy to keep inside the belt.

Still like to grab my Ruger LCR .38 special if I am in a hurry. light and good caliber.

Closest I can come to answering the way you want...

... is to say that for any gun that makes my primary rotation, there is one common theme:

Reliability.

Other factors affect the decision process, and may cause a switch in the line-up, but no gun sits in primary mode unless I trust it completely.

Current carry is a Smith and Wesson M&P.

At present, my EDC is a Kahr P45. Why?
It is the perfect combination of a legitimate SD caliber in a small, light, accurate and reliable pistol. :)

I carry others when the situation dictates/allows a different compromise.

I carry a S&W 640 wheel gun...

Why? Cause Most of my collection is 357s (and 12 gauge) and the 640 could use the ammo I all ready have.

The gun: a 3" S&W Model 10.

The reason?

I carry my combat commander in 38 super. I shoot well with it, it conceals well, and I am confident with it. Sometimes I carry a detective special. Same reasons.

Love that Model 10 with the 3-inch.

My choice:

Smith M638 Airweight.

Why:

It's hot in Phoenix. Hard to wear concealing clothing. M638 fits in the front pocket without being too heavy or too easy to spot. It has some punch with 158 gr. HPs, but I have learned to handle the recoil and shoot it accurately out to 10 yards. And it's a revolver, so no worries about malfs.

Hiking? A .40 cal. or my Smith .357 in a fanny pack. Not too conspicuous but enough for a mountain lion, the worst-case scenario. Bears get bear spray....

Work: HK USP Compact 9mm
Any other time: Kahr K9

#1 reason: Semi's are just what I grew up shooting so they're what I'm used to.

I carry a S&W 637 snub or a Ruger LCP in the summer. My winter carry is a Springfield TRP 1911. Why do I carry them? Because they are accurate and reliable.

Glock 26, 19 = reliability, ease of shooting, mag capacity. Easy to clean.

SW 642 - reasonable round, easy to pocket carry. Love, the CT laser. So for days you can't wear a belt gun.

SW 432 - very light because I don't expect zombies or Mumbai - getting the mail, mowing the lawn gun. I like snubbies.

It's all about Reliability, so, S&W Model 36,,,

I know it's only five shots,,,
I know that there are lighter revolvers out there,,,
I know there are more powerful cartridges than the .38 special.

But nothing is more reliable than my 2" Chief's Special,,,
Or more recently than my 3" Lady Smith.

It (they) always go bang.

.

Carried a 340PD in my trouser pocket for 7 years but recently sold it and went semi. A pair of Kahrs is what I carry now. Sometimes an MK40 and others a P380 depending on which day it is with an extra mag just in case. I carry with my shirt tail out in a Beltster by Bandera leather and find it very comfortable. More so than in a pocket. I like the flat profile and I've become convinced that they are reliable. So far my range time substantiates that. :)

Like gmfeier and MLeake, I feel reliability is king. I've had my K40 since 1996, and the only malfuction I ever experienced was due to me putting the recoil spring in backwards once (can't really blame the gun for that). So, after over 14 years of reliability, I feel pretty safe counting on this gun as my EDC.

All of my firearms are reliable, so that's not the #1 reason for carrying any of them.

#1 reason for the J-frame? Concealability. It's small enough to tuck anywhere without notice, so it's there when I need it.

#1 reason for the Glock 23? Increased firepower. Plain and simple truth.

Question for Daryl

You say all your guns are reliable. I'll take you at your word.

But I will ask, does this mean you either repair or weed out any gun that ever malfunctions? Or have you been very lucky in your purchases to date?]

(Even reputable makes have been known to hiccup on occasion.)
