I have watched Nubents hunting show every since it has been on tv and I now watch his "reality" show, TED OR ALIVE. Now that he is a "high roller" in the NRA, I wonder if he is a good spokesman for us, the gun owners?
There is no doubt that his heart is in the right place but sometimes I find his "phylosophical meanderings" a little boring and although they are usually "right on the money" there are those who will be offended. OK, yea, I know its real easy to say, "so what" but when you are the little dog on the block you usually get your but kicked if you start snapping at the big dogs. And we the hunters are the little dogs with only about 5% of the populace being hunters and probaly not much higher than that for we gun owners and the only thing saving our right to own is that "ole rag" the constitution of the US and that amendment is under almost constant attack and we don't need to be feeding them ammo

I like Ted, have met him on a couple of occasions....while his "in-your-face" irreverant rock-and-roll style attracts the younger crowd, it certainly offends others. He voices what many of us would like to say to the opposition....sure it's confrontational and not too classy. Ted's style is more at home with the gun show-blue jean crowd. Put him in a suit and send him to capitol hill as your representative and the law makers will run for cover to avoid being pictured with him....sort of like taking a pitbull to a cat show. The anti's would love to portray "all gun owners" as being just like Ted....maybe not the image we want when converting issue neutral people to our side.

By contrast Charlton Heston's style and presentation works for nearly all demographic groups. Heston was polite, articulate and had an aire of style...didn't need shock value to put point accross. He presented his case powerfully in a way that did not offend those that disagreed with him.

Do you want some guy like Nugent who says things like...

"Remember the Alamo! Shoot 'em!" he screamed to applause. "To show you how radical I am, I want carjackers dead. I want rapists dead. I want burglars dead. I want child molesters dead. I want the bad guys dead. No court case. No parole. No early release. I want 'em dead. Get a gun and when they attack you, shoot 'em."
-NRA Convention Speech

to represent gun owners to the rest of the country?

Do you want somebody like Nugent who openly calls fellow gun owners who are not in the NRA "the enemy"?

Nugent, who walked onto the stage with a large assault weapon in each hand, said those who support gun control aren't the enemy.

"They are a joke," he said. "Our enemy is the gun owners that don't belong to the NRA."

That is one hell of a smart PR man, alienating the one segment of the population from which the NRA is likely to gain more members. Obviously, anti-gun people are not going to be a big part of the NRA. Non-gun owners aren't going to be a big part of the NRA. So the population from which the NRA is most likely to grow is the population of gun-owners that are not members of the NRA, but Nugent calls them the enemy.

Given Nugent's classification of those people as the enemy, then obviously it would be stupid to have them join the NRA because they are the enemy, right? Just because a non-NRA gun owner finally joins the NRA does that person change in some way from being an enemy to a friend.

Why Nugent can't perceive of fellow gun owners and supporters as allies is beyond me. Calling the other part of the American population that votes pro-gun "the enemy" is just plain stupid.

Nugent would be a PR nightmare.

I have news for Ted, the anti-gun folks Nugent claimed were a joke, not the enemy, were the people who voted in favor of gun restrictions, not the pro-gun non-NRA members.

Depending upon who is doing the reporting, 60 - 80 million Americans own the 260 - 300 million firearms in America. Even at the low end, 60 million people are not a small number, fully one fifth of the population own firearms! What makes us an ineffective group, is that we don't vote as a block. If we ever did, no single party could withstand our vote.

As for Brother Ted, he certainly has an In-Your-Face personality. He doesn't mince words. He is not politically correct. He says exactly what's on his mind. And, he has enough popularity to pull it off with the media. Speaking of which, he plays the media rather well!

I've watched him "debate" several of the more prominent gun-grabbers. He cuts them off at the knees and guts them right on screen. He is a good conservationist, in the original sense of the term. He is a true liberal, again, in the original meaning of the term. The left and the right both dislike him, because he is so outspoken in his beliefs of the rights of men over that of government control.

Radical? Reactionary? Controversial? Pick a label! Like him or not, he is what he is. Unlike so many of us, he knows exactly what he wants out of life and goes for the gusto. That he has the money to do what he wants is a plus for his showmanship.

So is he a good spokesman for us? I wish we had more like him.

I have met ted 4 times because we have several mutual friends. I think he is a cool guy who makes good music, but he can be a jerk. He should be obnoxious, it gets attention. But he often goes too far and steps on a lot of his supporters toes.

JohnBrowning, well said.

I met Ted at an outdoor show when I was 14 and got my picture taken while shaking his hand. I felt cooooool! :D
I love his music, his morals, and his stance on hunting and guns. His delivery is in-your-face, but the squeaky wheel does, at times, get the grease.

Ted Nugent

I like this guy, He says what he thinks and means it. If I could choose between knowing a guy that I have to wonder all the time what he's thinking and a guy that tells it like it is I will always choose the later.

I carry!

In my opinion, as for as myself and most of those who post on this web site the number 60-80 million owners is very far from correct. That figures to be about 4 guns per owner and I personally have over 20 and many of the posters on this site report more than 4, some reporting as many as I have. Using this logic that number might be as low as 30 million but regardless, my point is that 10-20% of the population is not a number that it would be wise to go to battle with. For this reason I fight any attempt to have a hunting issue on the ballot in Alabama because history shows that the hunter is apt to loose.

I saw Ted and his wife the other night on a show and they did quite well but the interviewer seemed to be "friendly" even accepted an invite to come to Teds place for a hunt.

And a lot of people (more than you would suspect) own only 1 firearm. So distribution tends to even out.

Why? When we are so splintered into factions, there is no single "population" to contend with.

Interesting

Nugent is a fouled mouth zealot that spouts borderline racist rhetoric. He preaches to the lowbrow stereotypical gun owner choir and provides much ammo for the antis to use on the fence sitters

Long live Uncle Ted!

He may not be the most eloquent man, but he speaks his mind, and pulls no punches. You gotta respect that.....

Sure everyone has seen individuals who's personality never matured with age.... 50-60 year olds still talking like they are rebelious 18 year olds. In some ways that's Nugent...too bad his presentation hasn't matured with time.

i like uncle ted an i don't think his style turns off too many shooters or hunters, and he does say what he wants when he wants.... he does seem to thoroughly enjoy the shooting sports and is very enthusiastic about hunting the beast (as he says)...... there is room for all kinds of personalities to represent us...

Post (#4) pretty much nailed it

Well said Antipitas.:)

Maybe the case, but there are a lot of gun owners out there that would rather not act as wolves in sheeps wool to get the anti gunners to see us in a different light. I am perfeclty happy being called a backwoods redneck hick and having some people look down on me. I'm not sure I'd be so happy if I put on an uppity facade, took down my NRA stickers, traded in my 4X4 for a fuel efficient eco car.:barf: Anti's may see me as an educated responsible gun owner? Might not too.

I don't know if I'm making sense but I think that is why Ted plays the hardcase, that's just who he is & he's not changing for anybody. I like it.:D

Kinda fond of Mr. Nugent

he isnt your tea and biscuits kinda guy.

He says it likes he thinks it.... he is not a fence sitter.

I saw a talk he was giving to a bunch of kids. He mentioned that is he several years older then Ozzie. He also asked if they thought Ozzie could possibly do what he does, let alone utter complete sentences.

Then he told the kids that he never did drugs and the other guy did.

A better example for not doing drugs I can't think of.
