Taurus Judge

Love mine, although I think to market it or sell it as the best SD gun is a little off. It is a very very fun range plinker and could deffiantely be effective for sefl defense, although there are many better options.

It is more accurate than the haters would have you believe, but it is not the most accurate 45 colt out there (Ruger "old model" vaquero).

Depending on your primary purchase it is far from worthless. If you want it for fun don't wait. It is very fun. If you want it for CCW, a small auto or snubby will fit the bill better. If you want a shotgun for home defense, get a 12 guage

If anyone has doubts about what the judge can do, just watch the beginning of the Max Pain movie, where he shoots at a bathroom stall door and blows it off the hinges:D

Not only did he blow doors open with it, but he shot it six times, and it only holds five rounds. His was a magic Judge.

it would be far from worthless... Although probably better options out there.

My thought exactly

Too big a platform for what you get.

Still, while I will never own one, they do sell

Snake

Too big a platform for what you get.

I completely agree, my original post failed to articulate some of my "issues" with the judge, the platform size being one of those.

I bought a Judge strictly for a snake gun here in Alabama and it has performed perfectly in that task. I do not use it for self-defense. I have the 3" barrel ultralight and wanting to test patterns I picked up a 6" barrel gun just for testing. The 3" barrel gives a far denser pattern that the 6" so go for the shorter barrel. I think the longer barrel imparts more spin to the shot load and thus blows the pattern when it exits the barrel. The short barrel was also more accurate with .45 LC and buckshot. I also use American made shotshells (Winchester, Remington, Federal) because the foreign stuff (RIO, S&B) tend to swell up upon firing and are nearly impossible to eject.

.410 out of it is useless for defense.

I heard somewhere that you can't use hot .45 LC in
it either due to it not being strong enough.

I don't mean to interrupt the bashing session, but...

1. 4 .36 balls hitting approximately as hard as 4 .380's, maybe harder - how exactly is this "worthless"? I seriously want to understand how this would be ineffective. I would think it would be just the opposite. Sure birdshot is not appropriate, but who's out there recommending that? Nobody. Yet that's the straw man everyone sets up and attacks as if it's the Achiles' Heel of the .410 revolver.

2. Too big? The Judge is the size of a K/L frame, correct? I would think it is appoximately the size of a 4" M19 S&W, just bulkier. If your standard is a J-frame .38 snubby, then yes, it's big. But it's not like carrying a Super Redhawk either.

3. Taurus seems to have improved the patterning in the Raging Judge (their .454 Casull version) if anyone's interested.

I don't own a Judge as I don't trust Taurus quality, but will be purchasing a Governor as soon as I can find one for the versatiility. I can't for the life of me understand the hatred for the .410 revolver, probably the most versatile revolver technology ever offered.

I don't trust Taurus quality , it varies too much. A revolver that fires both .410 and .45 Colt is far from worthless. .410 for crawly snakes, .45 for 2 legged snakes. I'd rather have a Ruger in .45 Colt, use .45 shot loads for the crawly ones.

The disdain is because the 410 is sold as a wonder weapon of infinite stopping power to newbies - and you don't even have to aim.

If it is the size of my Model 19 - I would rather carry my Model 19.

I would think the Judge (or more compact Public Defender) or similar S&W Governor would be far from ineffective at typical (close-in) SD distances, particularly stoked with the short barrel/pistol .410 shot now available (I understand better SD-oriented .410 shot available now than when this '09 article was written)

I mentioned in two other threads (not mine) related to the Aurora tragedy (one in General Handguns--locked due to contentiousness w/in the thread of OP/posters of the OP's political premise), the other ".357 period.." in the Revolver forum...that I thought this 4510 platform was perhaps one of the few that might have had a chance with a face shot--obviously, given an admittedly unlikely oppportunity--having broader % chance of a disabling--or at least "distracting"--hit due to "focused" spread/impact area/oomph over single traditional pistol round...in a very dark and frantic environment. Yes, a pistol is different than a long-barreled shotgun even in .410. But if you've ever seen what even birdshot out of a regular .410 sg does to 3/8 plywood at medium-close "SD" distance (major t-n-t hole) "you" wouldn't sneer at the gauge and certainly would not volunteer to stand in front of or confront one.
(For HDSD don't get me wrong, a 12, 16 or 20 ga sg is far superior; we're talking a compromise pistol here)

I'd like to take one dove hunting... once... just for kicks to see if they work. Other than that, I don't have much use for one.

You aren't hunting with it are you? A Ruger BH or RH would seem more appropriate for hunting-specific duty). Why otherwise would you need "hot" .45 LC out of it, when "normal"/SAMMI (ie, not watered-down cowboy) is what most would load a .45 DA revolver with--and would be very effective--for SD anyway?
