Suffolk County NY handgun License holders

Can you imagine the headlines in Newsday (the lefty bird cage fodder) if the SCPD decided to remove the restrictions?

Mayhem! Shootouts in the street! BLOOD WILL FLOW! Hide the children!

It's still all about power to the SCPD. If they removed our restrictions and didn't let it out to the press no one would ever know. Things would not change. We had to jump through hoops of fire to get our restricted permits. I wouldn't even mind having to take a class to get the unrestricted permit. At least that would give us an option.

If they just changed the wording in the handbook, even the license holders wouldn't know, it's not like they read it.

In the '02 handbook, with the addition of the "you are now allowed to stop for beverages and car pool" etc clause, I always thought that was a sort of wink and a nod that things have been loosened up a bit, just watch your step about flashing or brandishing etc.

But that's apparently all been withdrawn now.

Sorry but the SCPD pistol office is their rubber gun duty. My coworker's neighbor has been there for years. Of course he (SCPD officer) is a raving alcoholic whose family has left him and returned more that once and neighbors avoid him due to his unpredictable behavior as I understand it. This is the type of person deciding if we are responsible enough to even own a handgun. :barf:

They should make some regional forums here so we can all rant in the New York secton instead of boring the world with our local problems.:o
They don't know what living in BizarrO world is like.

WOW. What a place. A shame the constitution does not apply there. Maybe you could become a State some day!! I'm glad I live down here in the sticks...

Gazing at his watch he wonders when ViperJon will return with the"good things".........

To me the only good thing about NYC is the culture, history, racial diversity, transportation system, and the wide variety and availibility of foods from other countries...

everything else just sucks, overcrowding, dirtiness, bumpy roads, cost of living, high cost of real estate etc etc

Bravo on a good come back! My first retort is always the culture. Seriously, we do as New Yorkers take for granted what other people have to traverse the country to find. Where else can you find a real Gyro at 3:30 AM or some of the most technologically advanced medical care in the world. Don't forget the bus driver named Bob that was previously Barbara who has a wife named Donna that used to be Don......

We just have serious 2A issues that need to be addresses down state wide.

Hopefully the US Supreme Court upholds the 2nd Amendment and gives us teeth to fight for our rights!!

I can't wait till I can move out of NY to a state that treats people like people rather than criminals!!

i'm holding a suffolk pistol license application but i have traffic violations

I've never been arrested or anything like that.

i'm 24 years old and clean in that respect.

but my driving record is ugly becuase of a suspension and a number of tickets. illegal u turn, speeding, insruance gap.

i should just expect not to get a license right?

i don't want to spend $200 on a sure denial of my application.

If you do not have anything like a DUI or really reckless driving (80 in a 30 or something else which would cause them to really question your judgment) and have made peace with the authorities on anything outstanding you should be alright. Talk to them about it first if you want.

They will also look at employment history, specifically for firings with cause. If you are married or divorced expect them to contact your spouse or ex to find out if she wants you to have one. If she doesn't they will deny you and never let you know why. That is what they told my wife and decades earlier my mother when my father got his. They will also go through things that were sealed like your juvenile record so be ready to explain everything. My buddy had a trespassing charge from when he was 15 and decided to explore the roof of the school at night... He still got his permit.

Where's the part where they tell you,you can only stop to take a dump once to and from the range?

WHAT A LOAD OF .....

Oh, and absolutely positively reveal everything to them. Part of it is an honesty test. Lie and get found out and you are sunk.

You New Yorkers have my sympathy....

I grew up in northern New York state, and left there for good more than 30 years ago. I would gladly be living there still, except for the taxes, the gun laws, some of the people, and the winters. And I can deal with the winters.

I always loved the country. It is just the people (and especially the people running things) that I can't stand.

Permit only for to the range and back, huh? Don't they let you hunt with a sportsmans permit anymore?

Just to let you know how it once was (and we thought it bad then, and it was), I got my permit at age 18 in Saratoga County. Hunting and Sporting purposes. And I think it cost maybe $25. 5 sets fingerprints, 4 photographs, 3 character references, background check. Good for LIFE, unless revoked. good everywhere in the state except NYC. Guns listed by make, caliber, barrel length, and ser#.:barf:

I like the laws where I am now much better. NO permit to own. NO permit for open carry. Concealed permit good for 4 years, initial cost $65 (including fingerprint fees, (1 set), renewal is cheaper. 5 working day waiting period to buy, unless you have a concealed permit. If you do, NO waiting period.

And we also have no state income tax.:)

The problem you face is both an entrenched system with elitist attitudes, and an overwhelming overpopulation of liberals. You can stay and fight, and try to change things, but you are vastly outnumbered, and politically outgunned. Or you can leave, and move to a place where there are more people who feel like we do, and where your voice can still do some good to keep them from making here like it is there. That's what I did. You should do what is most important to you. I left family and friends behind, with no real regrets, because I found someplace where individual rights meant something still. And it is a lot less crowded, too!

Hello All--I'm new to the Firing Line (my first post). I've completed all the flaming hoops for the Suffolk license application, and am waiting for it to hopefully be approved (been 5 months since I applied, 3 months since the interview). I read through the new handbook, and was upset to see that the rule about refreshments was gone. I did some searching, and found this thread. Glad to see I'm not the only one upset about it. I had planned to do some shooting with a friend upstate--does this mean that I'm not supposed to stop for food or gas, or to talk at his house? Drive 4 hours from LI, shoot, and drive back? It's really a shame that we have so many ridiculous restrictions--all of which only affect the people that are keeping the law anyway. Those carrying illegal guns for less-than-wholesome purposes are certainly not reading and taking to heart the Suffolk County Pistol License Handbook...

Tomcat017,

Welcome. First, you couldn't carry all the way upstate even if you had a full carry from the SCPD. Your permit is worthless in NYC and in the surrounding states. You need to lock it up unloaded in the trunk or otherwise inaccessible while transporting it through Indian country.

You SCPD sportsman's permit is by NY law a full carry outside NYC. The SCPD can punish you administratively with suspension or revocation should you be caught carrying outside the restrictions but it is in no way a criminal offense. I do not advise this but it is something to keep in mind. Personally when going to and from the range, which I do often, I use a tuckable holster because flashing in NY is never a good thing.

The best thing to do is to bombard Levy, the county exec, with letters. The head of the SCPD is a political appointee of his. The law was originally written to make the issuer answerable to the electorate. Since he is Levy's man Levy needs to be told what is going on. There is no pattern of crime following permit holders who were stopping to eat or meet on the way to or from the range. The restriction is arbitrary and has been put in place by the woman leading the pistol bureau, a full strength anti. He needs to know this from us.

Levy, while a Democrat, has been in our corner for several pro gun issues. Give him the chance to do something.

Thanks for all the info, Musketeer! I knew about the NYC restriction (having the gun locked away), but assuming you do that, is it OK to bring the gun upstate? I thought it was, anyway. Once you're through NYC, is it OK to carry concealed on the way to a range/hunting upstate? I guess what I'm trying to get at is that I read the handbook as saying that you are allowed to bring the gun off LI to other parts of NY, but not allowed to stop anywhere except the shooting destination. Is that correct? And if so, I think I definitly will write to exec Levy, b/c that's quite the inconvienience (or impossible, with the gas-consuming truck that I have). Anyway...thanks for the info. Sorry to be a little slow there--hope you can clarify.
