Stupid Argument

Oooh, but that proves that the .22 is harmless, because he didn't kill anyone, doesn't it?

Of course life is dangerous in other ways. That's why the smart ones also use their seat belts, and have automobile insurance, lock their doors at night, and make their wife and children taste everything that is on their plate to see if they die, before they eat it.

You forgot to mention Life Insurance for the wife and children:eek:

If I mention that I wouldn't want to get shot with a BB pistol, would someone here take that as a good basis to start carrying a Daisy?

As I've said, this argument is indicative of fallacious reasoning in that it oversimplifies and completely misinterprets the notion that it's trying to refute. When someone says "you wouldn't want to get shot with x cartridge" it's about the degree to which are averse to getting shot with x cartridge, not simply that given the choice, you'd rather not.

It's no dummer than the camp that says "If you shoot someone with a (insert almost any cartridge here) they'll just get mad and beat you to death."

While some cartridges have a better potential than others, let's not forget that all of them can be deadly, or not, depending on the location of the shot and the attacker's state.

This intelligent thread really got me thinking..... Since concealed carry is illegal here in IL, I have been carrying a spoon for self defense. Based on the comments here I now realize how foolish I have been, so I have switched to a butter knife!. Bad guys beware!

Its not the Spoon itself that's a problem.

Spoons are fine as long is it is a Large Spoon, and you spend an appropriate amount of time at the range practicing Double Taps:D

A spoon also need to be thoroughly test to ensure there are no feeding problems

Other people can carry what they feel comfortable with........I'll do the same.

This is really the point, carry whatever you want or don't carry at all. But if you want to justify what you are carrying, make an intelligent argument. Sometimes I wind up wondering if the person making an argument has the mentality to even carry a spoon.

I think in any intelligent discussion of spoons as SD weapons we must also consider break-in time. Much like a quality garden spade, (which I prefer over a spoon for home defense) as the 'cutting' edge wears in with repeated use, the effectiveness improves. What the spoon is made of is also very important. While I feel 'plastic' is an acceptable material for handguns, I think all steel construction in spoons is the smart choice. There has not been sufficient time to really asses the long term reliability of polymers; maybe after a century or two we'll have enough data to make an intelligent choice? As you can see I am old school in my views on spoons. Hope this helps...:D

As long as you use a .45 cal spoon you will be all right. If won't mater where you hit him. A tap on the finger will be enough to kill him instantly. :)

Heck, just pulling a spoon out at a gun fight will usually cause the bad guy to stop what he is doing.

As silly as some of these comments have been it makes me think of how many common items can be used for defense in an emergency situations. Items such as mechanic's or carpenters tools, bug spray or other aerosol sprays, silverware, or all sorts of common items could be used in an emergency. I don't, however, recommend a pair of pliers over a .45. I don't want to be assaulted in any manner, even verbally.

I get tired of being called a fool/idiot/someone who doesn't care much about his fami

And that's the only real problem I have.

I have looked at the FBI ballistics gelatin tests,,,
I have given considerable thought to my skill level,,,
And I have shot phone books, boards, water bottles with my gun.

I have confidence in my choice of caliber/bullet type.

But there will always be some fanatical person,,,
Who feels the need/right to berate me for my choice.

I do get rather tired of that.

Well said! FWIW I have never let being unqualified stop me from doing something I thought worthwhile. My wife is standing by for a testimonial if needed.

Aaron, here's something to consider.

Any and everytime someone disagrees with you, it is what we in the business call a "learning opportunity."

he may be right, and your duty as a sentient being is to learn from him.

He may be wrong, and all you can learn from him is what a fool he is.

The hard part is knowing which is which.

Whenever someone tells me something as fact, the first thing I do is to examine our history. My brother in law is the person who inspired the adage, "never send a Bobby to do a man's job." He's the one who drained an old car battery into an anthill. (the grass still won't grow there.)

I admit, sometimes I've learned things from him, but usually, it's been by watching him do things like eating acorns, and learning not to pick up an acorn and eat it.

Point being, consider the source, laugh at your keyboard at the fools, and take comfort in the fact that any other intelligent person who follows these threads is laughing at him too. Every issue has numerous possible sides to it. The fool fixates on what he needs to believe, ignores all other information, and will persistently shout down those who disagree.
