Someone finally says it: “California has a negative influence on our society”

For Medrano, there’s only one despicable group of people to blame for Nevada passing a smoking ban that eliminates smoking in restaurants and bars that also serve food: Californians.

“California has a negative influence on our society,” he said, glancing around as cigarette smoke fills the stuffy place. “They should keep their world in their world.”

It’s a popular refrain from many in the West. When Californians move in, it’s always their fault when things change. They infect the rest of the region with their politics and questionable driving, and make housing prices soar.

Sherrie Watson has lived in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, since she was 16 and is quite fed up with Californians.

“They complain how cold it is. And they just moved here because it is cheaper and to ’get away,’ but then they keep saying things like, ‘We did it in California this way, so why don’t you change?’ ”

“They came here because they liked it the way it was when they visited, but then they want to change it. I don’t get it,” she said.

Picking on Californians has almost become a sport, with people trying to come up with the catchiest slogans or blogging about how annoying Golden Staters are.

Don't get me wrong, there are alot of gun owners on this board who live in Kali and I know plenty of people from Kali who hate what Kali has become. However, when you think about all the bad laws and policies that we have in the US, many of them an be traced back to Kali. Smoking Bans (Based on junk science EPA study), Draconian gun bans (OK, Kali isn't the only one in this regard, but they are one of the major ones.), Homeowners associations, Watermelon environmentalism (Modern socialistic-environemtalism, Green on the outside, red on the inside.), Quagmire of regulation, high taxes, and environmental laws, illegal immigration (Again, not the only one, but a major player and the politics involved there don't help anything.), and probably many others.

When you look at the Demographics of the state by county, you wonder how things would be different if there was a North-California and a South-Kalifornia.

I home we can have some good discussion on this.

I hope we can have some good discussion on this.
This statement seems just a bit disingenuous considering it came at the end of a statement containing no less than a half dozen "Kali" references and the word "socialist" thrown in for good measure.
But what the heck...

I like the weather in southern California but I wouldn't live there. Everything I enjoy doing is pretty much illegal.

OK, you got me on that one. I was kind of refering to debating the article, the responces to it on the Fark.com thread, get insight from members of this forum who left the "Golden State", etc. I should have mabee put my thoughts about it in a seperate post or just waited for some people to respond first. I'll have to remember that for next time.

I don't know, I might be wrong. It has happened before.

Having spent a bit of time in California (largely due to having a wife from back there) I think the biggest complaint I generally have is that they always want to take a good idea way too far.

For instance: indoor public smoking bans. Probably not popular here, but I'm a fan of them. Call that an "agree to disagree," I suppose, because it isn't necessarily the point I'm getting at. California just can't leave it at that...you've got cities trying to ban smoking outdoors, where there's definitely no health risk posed to anybody else.

Same goes for a lot of environmental restrictions, equal opportunity protections, worker protections, etc. It's like they just breeze right past "reasonable" and "beneficial" and go right to "downright draconian and stifling."

And shoot, we all know I'm a bit of a liberal.

The folks I feel really bad for are the people in rural/semi-rural California. The ones who live nowhere near LA or San Francisco. Because they have to deal with the same crap, and at the same time receive none of the (often dubious) benefits. Seriously, ya'll should just move up here...we'll treat ya better.

California is great, none of the other states have the geography we have. You can go surfing and skiing in the same day. I'm a classic car buff and the lack of snow (in the city) has preserved all the classics. If shooting and hunting were my main hobby I would probably not want to live here.

The housing issue is the main reason people leave. Decent starter houses are in the 500-600k range anywhere in the southland. I went to my 10 year high school reunion last month and everyone who had bought a home had done so out of the state. Its going to get worse here because all the smart people are going to leave and the illegal aliens are going to take over. My gf wants to move to Colorado Springs. I hear it only snows there for a couple weeks a year, so I might be leaving too.

California also gave us Proposition 13, in 1986 they recalled then Chief Justice Rose Bird and two other justices from their State Supreme Court, in 2000 they approved Proposition 22, in
2003 they recalled Gray Davis. Can't be all bad.

I hear otherwise. But I've never lived there (only had friends stationed at Ft. Carson).

California really is a beautiful state, from the beaches of San Diego all the way to the mountains and forests up north. But I don't surf, so I'd rather live someplace like Phoenix where you can go golfing and skiing the same day. Plus you can still preserve your classic cars. And own real guns.

.

Not so, you can do that if your close to Mt. Hood too.

That is part of the trouble you sell your place in that mess and get enough to buy a nicer one here and still put bucks in the bank. Has made the cost of housing here skyrocket and folks know it and don't like ya for it.

I left So cal about the time you were born. The gun laws were still pretty relaxed. It was/is a whole bunch of other reasons. A lot is the people that live there. Laws, and the air is terrible, I worked in the Mtn's east of Berdoo and going home in the evening we got to calling the place the black hole. You'd have to come off the mtn. a lot to understand how bad the air really is. I was back down there in the late 80's livin with a chick in Colton. She was about a mile and a half from the hills , some days you couldn't see them. Now it is plenty worse, than when i was a kid, and if they keep it up you will catch NYC or NJ soon in the gun restriction area. If you go anywhwere the place is full of people.

‘We did it in California this way, so why don’t you change?’

Yep the worse thing here is folks from Calif. or from large, or eastern City's, that want to escape the rat race where their from but then gripe " they way we did it was",,,,,, I tell ya local folks hate ya when you do that. I know I am a native from here and married to one all my friends but one are Idaho natives.

We all wish y'all would stay away..... sorry for being such a grump but I watched rural so.cal. where I grew up grow like the Treasure Valley area is now and how it ruined all the places I loved to go fish and hunt and just run in the boonies and I see The same thing happening here DARN!!!!
New gates. no trespassing signs, no hunting signs, trash all over the hills in places new friggin laws to try and control the mess I could go on and on.
Idaho sucks don't come here.

Maybe I'll move to Wy, or north ID. or someplace if I could get good work.

Ca. is a bad influence I know first hand. I get back down there ever couple of years and I tell ya you can have it about two days andI am saying " lets get outta this dirty mess. Amazing how dirty everything is bushes everything from the air, besides the trash all ovet he place and the naaa I am gonna stop...

“California has a negative influence on our society”

ha, all the girls like try to like talk like they'er from like awsome California around here now because that's like the totally awsome thing to like do, ya know? Whoa! They have that like totally high pitched voice and like sound just like all those like hollywood girls on like WB soap operas.:barf: :barf: :barf:

Give me a girl with a Southron accent:) Houston has been deSouthernized as far as girls go.

Doug,

I can't handle that syrupy Southern Belle stereotypical accent, but I appreciate a woman with a real voice.

As for the smoking ban, I like to be able to find SOME place where I can be inside without smoke. I am an ex-smoker and you know that we are the most biased.

On the other hand, I was born, raised and live in California, but could not tolerate having to live around any California mindset other than Orange County circa 1950-1960 or current rural California. Too many of these people are overbearing, self serving and generally ignorant.

Man, did someone give you a line. My Stepdaughter lives in the Springs, and the grandkids have a great time in all that "2 weeks of" snow.

Don't feel too bad, we're still doing ok for ourselves.

Thunderhawk88,

Re: "Don't feel too bad, we're still doing ok for ourselves.

I dunno about that. Here in San Ramon (30 miles from SF) we can't buy firearms we want because of the AWB and the fact that the wrong color can get a handgun deleted from the approval list. Real bullpuckey.

Then there is that 10, 11 or whatever day thing depending on where you buy/transfer and how paranoid they are. Despite the fact you have an "arsenal" at home already. It is really annoying to have to go through a whatever day cooling off period when I have .357 magnums, semi auto rifles and a riot shotgun stored in my house.

The SF and LA crews are jerks.

You know, there are a lot of things about California that annoy me and I'd not choose to live there...but if there's one thing that predisposes me to absolutely refuse to live there it's the firearms laws.

THAT we totally agree on!!!

That is why we have the freedom to live where we choose!

See, this is good. We are narrowing down the areas where the "problems" come from and "why" the problems happen.

One crazy thing that I forgot to mention is how Cali has contributed to the higher gas prices. They started requiring special blends and as a result we now have far too many localized fuel blends. California needs a special blend of fuel while another area needs it's own blend. If one blend runs out, it is illegal to just use another. Plus refineries have to retool to make each blend.

It's like each state having it's own electrical standard. One state uses 120 VAC at 50 Hz while the next state uses 240 VAC at 60 Hz, while yet abother might use 160 VAC at 40 Hz. That would simply not be economical and the same applies to gasoline in the form of localized fuel blends. Yet lawmakers don't see this and make the above senario into law thinking it will "make things better".

They also went in head first with MTBE without properly testing it and let many drinking water supplies and aquifers become poisoned. Now they have banned the very substance they required be put in gasoline.

I don't care for that fake or "syrupy" accent either. It's exaggerated, put on and fake. It's also not typical. It's more hollywood or people's attempt to imitate hollywood. Even the more South Carolina accents sound genuine when the are indeed genuine.
THE Southern accent (there are many types from Texas to Virginia) is genuine, sweet and gentle.

Soon after Calif. outlawed MTBE the Chevron pumps here received a sticker that proclaimed the presence of that very product in out gas here in Idaho. They lasted a year or longer. I have A HD that I had always put Chevron in as much as I could. It began to run so bad I was going to get a tuneup. I got caught out and no Chevron was available, by the time one tank had ran thru the bike it ran better so I bought more brand X. That was several years and 20 or so thousand miles ago and am just now thinking the scoot could use a tuneup. I still won't buy Chevron.
I have wondered what it has done to our water supply if anything.

I am native to Nevada but I sure like visiting CA. I,m 20 miles from the border so it's a close vacation spot for me. Within a few hours I can pick my geography/sport from fishing to hunting to deep sea diving to alpine meadows to palm trees. I really like California for it's marvelous vistas and wildlife.

Nevada just passed a Statewide smoking ban. It did not pass muster in my County. I live in Virginia City, Storey County. We were the only County that did not approve the smoking ban. We have been violating the law since it took effect. The standard answer to State Health has been "This is Private Property and don't tell me what my customers may or may not do".

My point is this, we suffer "bleed over" politics. The old sying is "So goes California, so goes the Nation".

I don't mean to offend any of you in California, it is still my favorite vacation spot.

Bill

Well east coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when I'm down there

The mid-west farmers daughters really make you feel alright
And the northern girls with the way they kiss
They keep their boyfriends warm at night

I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california girls

The west coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a french bikini on hawaii island
Dolls by a palm tree in the sand

I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldnt wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world

I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california girls

Welcome to my world hun.
We Floridians started hearing that from New Yorkers for thirty years ago. A quick look around Orlando today will tell you that the Yankees won again, but then it was a rat plague from California that started it all
