Smith and Wesson serial number search

Age of my Great Grandfathers 38?

Serial # 141xxx, I think I remember my grandfather telling me that his dad was a cop... does that make sense for this gun? Any help is greatly appreciated. It is a S&W by the way

sflinky: Assuming it is a six shot K frame revolver in .38 Special, then it is a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 2nd Change, made between 1906 & 1909. This gun were made prior to S&W introducing modern heat treating in 1920, so it should only be fired with standard velocity lead ammunition. It was designed for and the sights should be regulated for 158 grain lead round nose.

thanks for the response.. there is a copyright date on the gun as new as Feb 6, 1908, so the make sense. Thanks alot!

wrp: The standard catalog of S&W serial number list only goes as high as CTAxxxx in October 2004, so your gun was made after that. Sorry I can't be more precise. The 36-10 was introduced in 2001 with the internal lock.
There was a 36-10 Texas Hold 'Em" blued special run in 2005 and a run of 225 36-10 nickel finish guns in 2006. There was also a run of blued clear-coat finish guns in 2004-2006. The above may help identify and date your gun.

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

I received from my father-in-law a S&W Model 27 .357mag with Serial #S1994XX. I think he got them from his father-in-law when he past away back in '83. Just looking for more info on it, like year on manufacture? Thanks to all for you help.

God Bless

Bill

Hey I just bought an old Smith top-break for $100 and want to know the year of manufacture.

It's blue, 4", DA, 5 shot .38 SW. It appears to be a model 38 DA but has no model number.

The top of the barrel reads: Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass USA PAT'D Jan 24, 65 July 11, 65 Aug 24, 69 REISSUE July 25, 71 May 11, 80 Jan 5, 82

Serial # 3023XX

I think this means it's a 3rd issue? can anyone tell me?

Any additional links, books, or info would be helpful. Thanks.

Yes, it's a 38DA, 3rd Model. Serial numbers ran from 119001 in 1884 to 322700 in 1895.
