Smith and Wesson serial number search

Hey guys, I found the forum while looking for a resource for S&W serial numbers.

I just today got an old S&W M36, I think...there's no model number where the cylinder crane is. It has the number 19500 stamped on the butt, cylinder and bottom of the bbl.
And it has Q 71350 stamped where the cylinder crane is...can I get an age on it.

Thanks!

Assuming it is a Chiefs Special (pre model 36), serial number 19500 would date it to 1952.
S&W did not start using model numbers until ~1957.

Hello. I have a Smith and Wesson top break. It's a .32 S&W and I think it's a 4th Model. It has what look like home-made wood grips that cover the bottom of the grip frame, and I'm a bit leery if taking them off. I think the serial number is on the cylinder face, and it is 2314xx.

I know there are a lot of variations in these old guns. Any help you can give me in identifying its age and model is appreciated.

There are two variations, Safety Hammerless and Double Action.
If it's a Double Action it would be a 4th model. Serial numbers ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909.
If a Safety Hammerless it would be a 3rd model with serial numbers running from 170000 in 1909 to 242981 in 1937.

S&W 1930-1940

I recently acquired a .38 Special S&W that belonged to my great grandfather. I sent info to Smith & Wesson, but all they could tell me is it was produced sometime between 1930 and 1940. The serial number is 471XXX. From what I’ve read, they didn’t use model numbers yet. The other number stamped on the gun where the model number is on newer revolvers is 25746. Anyone have any more details for me? Let me know if you need more info. Thanks!

Assuming this is a 6 shot revolver, it would be a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th Change. Your serial number of 471xxx actually places its manufacture date around mid 1920’s. SN 316xxx was in 1920 and 500000 was ~1927. That’s about as close as I can get you.
