Smith and Wesson serial number search

I recently inherited an S&W Model 13-1, 357 magnum, serial 286XX (on the frame as well as the cylinder swing-out). I did some legwork and it looks like it was made between 1974 - 1977. There are some other markings, 'F17 3 B2 B5 N (in a triangle) and J (in a circle).

If anyone is interested in posting back some extra information or history about this pistol, I'd be appreciative. Thanks!

I just picked up a cherry 65-2, serial 7D65XXX. It is recessed, but it isn't pinned, which makes me think it was a late -2 transition gun, so probably 1980-1982. Does anyone have any more info?

When was this Model 13-1 made?

Hey all, I need a bit of help. I recently inherited a nice S&W Model 13-1, 4 inch barrel, serial numbers 286XX both on the frame and the cylinder swing-out, other markings F17, 3, B2, B5, N (in a triangle), J (in a circle).

I looked around quite a bit, I feel confident that this piece was produced between 1974 and 1977. Any additional precision on the date, or details which anyone happens to know, would be very welcome. Thanks in advance!

S&W Model 38 serial number help

Hello, I am new to The Firing Line today, so please excuse and let me know if I violate any protocols. Found the forum while looking for serial number date, of manufacture.

I have a Model 38, serial number 1J22XXX that I would like to determine year of manufacture. I purchased it used several years ago, have the original blue box, not looking to sell.

Thanks in advance for any courtesies extended,

Jim

As I answered in your first post, that is not the serial number. A 13-1 will have will have a "D" in the serial number.
1974 to 1975 = D659902 to D750000
1975 to 1976 = D750001 to D870000
1976 to 1977 = D870001 to D999999
Late 1977 = 2D00001 to 2D80000.

serial number 1J22XXX
1983.

38 Special Revolver Serial Numbers

I was able to get my Grandfather's S/W revolver from my mom before she passed away. I would love to know the history of this gun to pass along to my sons and grandchildren, if I live that long, to know when this gun was made. The story I was told when I was a child was my grandfather bough this revolver for $25.00. I would love to know the time frame that his gun was made. The Serial number on the gun is S864XXX. If anyone one needs the other 3 digits please contact me directly. Lastly, although my grandfather bought this gun for $25.00, I wouldn't sell it for $25,000, in the event someone wants to but it, it's not for SALE!

Thanks, Rick

You have a Smith & Wesson Military & Police revolver made sometime shortly after WWII, 1945-1948.

List price the next year, 1949, was $55.50 so I assume Grandpa bought his second hand at some later date.

If you contact the S&W historian Roy Jinks and send him this info along with $50, he will return a history letter on your revolver that gives you some information on the model itself and a production history of it, and then he will also include the date that S&W shipped it and where they sent it and he will also include the features that particular revolver was outfitted with when it was shipped. Expect 4-6 weeks to get this letter.

I did it for my 1921 version of the (basically) same revolver. Mine was shipped to a hardware store in Huntington, WV!
