See pic for location of serial number. If it's a pre 1957 then there will be no model number on it. An older gun may also have the serial number stamped on the underside of the barrel and the back of the cylinder. One or both of the numbers you gave are assembly numbers. In addition, I need to know the exact wording of the caliber stamped on the side of the barrel. And, of course, a picture always helps.Model Number is, I think, 780450 and on the frame, 27597.
K364270 = 1959. It would be a model 14.1. .38 spl K364270, pinned, not recessed maybe 97-98%
2. .22 K28293, pinned, recessed, maybe 95-96%
K2908xx = 1957. It would be a K-22. Later that year when S&W started assigning model numbers it would become the model 17.Butt stamp under grip is K 2908XX
Serial numbers ran from 65701 in 1915 to 144684 in 1940.Model 1905 4th Change (32-20)
#96441
Five post up from yours is a picture with the serial number location. The number you gave is an assembly number.Looking at a model 10-6 it has a custom barrel, bo-mar sights, 99% blue ser# 71847 from the yoke
1990.Serial Number on bottom of frame: BFE53XX
N9xxxxx range ran from 1982 to 1986.S&W Model 629-1 N932xxx .44 Remington Magnum
S&W Model 66 7K55xxx .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum
N4xxxxx range ran from 1977 to 1978.I hope I can get a born on date for a Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 serial number N402XXX that is found on the butt of the pistol. Under the grips are stamped F3 and 535xx. What are these extra numbers? Could the second set of numbers refer to the five inch barrel?
I have the book and it can still be confusing.I am familiar with Browning and Beretta date stamps and serial number data bases but Smith & Wesson remains a mystery to me.
