S&W reused the same serial numbers between their different models years ago. As I will need to determine the model first I will need a much better description and / or picture to help you. Chambering, how many rounds it holds, swing out cylinder or top break, finish, etc.
If the gun was made post 1957 the model number location can be seen in pic #1. Serial number location in pic #2

K38 sn: K 313345

Hi, this gun has a 6 inch barrel. 4 screws, no model markings and SN k313345 on the bottom of the frame. Since model numbers began in 1957 and the 5'th screw was removed in 1955 this gun should be produced between those changes. So my guess is that i just bought a target masterpiece. I was hoping that someone could help me out to get as spesific as possible here.

Thanks. I havent shot it yet, but i have big expectations. It is almost as tight as my 1958 Colt Python. And the trigger feels good. Only need a good clean up. Guess it'll do good with 148gr WC in size .357.

38 S&W Special; ser#102*; model 6029; 4" barrel
No such model number from S&W. Sounds like an assembly number.
See four post above yours for location of serial number. If your gun was made after 1957 the pics above also show the location of the model number, it will start with M or MOD.

Hi laytonj1,

I've got two S&W revolvers, but based on your photos and post above, they may be somewhat different - they seem to have numbers in both places and those numbers are different:

First is a Model 19-3, inside the yoke or crane are the markings "98066" and larger "F16". The serial number on the base of the frame is 6K137xx.

Second is a Model 60 with the same situation; inside the yoke or crane are the markings "83089" and a larger "S". The serial number on the base of the frame is R1058xx.

Any information you could provide would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Doc

The serial number on the base of the frame is 6K137xx.
The serial number on the base of the frame is R1058xx
6K137xx = 1974.
R1058xx = SN's ran from R100000 in 1974 to R190000 in 1977 so must likely 1974 also.
The other numbers you see are assembly and inspector numbers. There have been time periods when S&W also stamped the SN on the frame in the yoke area but (with very few exceptions) the base of the grip is the one consistent location.

Jim,

Thanks very much. I am grateful for your time and response.

It appears I have a couple 40 year old S&W revolvers, and I'm real pleased to discover this. I appreciate your information.

Have an old "Model 10"???

I bought a S&W revolver that in all respects looks like a model 10, 5 inch bbl; however in the yoke there is no model number like my other 10. Instead there is a stylized number 1 with a smaller number 1 in a circle slightly above and to the left. In the bottom part of the yoke is the number 4. Shoots well, is in great shape, just curious as to what "model" it may be. The serial # on the butt is C 428xxx. Any ideas?

Model 36
J205xxx
SN's ran from J100000 in 1973 to J250000 in 1974. So, most likely 1974.

Your right. It's a .38 M&P 1st Model. Pictures help a lot. Serial number dates it to 1st year of production. SN's ran from 1 in 1899 to 20975 in 1902.

The serial # on the butt is C 428xxx.
It's a 38 Military & Police. They became the model 10 when S&W began stamping model numbers ~ 1957.
Yours dates to 1949.

Sorry DWG1861, I typo'd the date. It's 1959. SN's ran from C402924 in 1957 to C429740 in 1959.

I recently scored a beauty: Model 57 no dash 4" in nickel, fired very little. Serial number is N878xxx. Recessed cylinder but the barrel isn't pinned, so I'd guess early 80's before the recessed cylinder was phased out.

I just got a 629-3; 8 3/8"; Classic with full lug barrel, pre-lock. It is in excellent shape can someone look up for me the production time frame. The number inside the crane is BKA5xxx.

Thanks for making this resource available.
