Smith and Wesson serial number search

2 S+W Revolvers

Hey everyone, I'm new to the board and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a ballpark date for two S+W Revolvers. I know the best way is through the factory, but just looking for a general idea. I inherited these guns from a retired detective. The first I believe is a model 10 or M+P the SN is C456xx. The second is a snubby, that I believe is a Chief's Special the SN is 136xx. Both are 38 spl. Any help would be appreciated. Pictures are attached. Thanks again.

The serial number is C231xx
Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951. Yours is likely 1948/49.
Hard to tell condition from the pic but $300 to $400.

The first I believe is a model 10 or M+P the SN is C456xx. The second is a snubby, that I believe is a Chief's Special the SN is 136xx.
As above, serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951. Yours is likely 1948/49. And it is a M&P which became the Model 10 when S&W began model numbers in 1957.
The Chiefs Special is 1952.

serial # is 26619 on square butt
Your Chiefs Special is 1953.

Hey guys,

I received what appears to be a S&W Model 17 (.22 LR) which belonged to my great grandfather. The serial number is 669xxx. There's another number on the cylinder which is 284xxx. Not sure why there are two numbers. Can anyone help me out on a DOB? I can post pics if necessary. Thank you

38 Special DOM

New to the board. I have a S&W 38 Special with a 4" barrel. The serial number is C2315xx. Can someone give me an approximate DOM and what it may be worth? It was passed down from my grandfather and I'm looking to sell it to cover some medical expenses. Many thanks!

Thanks,
Mike

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the board, and I am looking for some information about a gun I inherited from my great-grandfather after he passed. I believe it is a Smith and Wesson model 1 1/2 but I'm not 100%. It breaks up and holds five rounds (too big for .22, probably .32) I was wondering just how old this gun is, the serial number (on the bottom of the grip) is 438XX. The gun is in great condition, so I was wondering just how old it is, and if it is indeed the model 1 1/2. Also, I don't think I could bear to part with this one, but I was still wondering how much it could be worth.

Any help is appreciated,

Jeremiah

Dating a S&W Model 28

Hello all,
I'd like to find out the production date on a Highway Patrolman I was given as a gift. S/N: N283XXX. I'm new to this model, but had it 'appraised' for trade in on amother weapon and they offered surprisingly low-even at 90%+ condition. But, it was at an 'Outfitter' type store.
And what are the production years for Model 28-1 and 28-2?
Was there any different finishes issued?

Thanks much!

The serial number is 669xxx
See pic for serial number location. If that is where you got the SN from and there is no "K" prefix then it's a K-22 Outdoorsman. Serial numbers ran from 632124 in 1931 to 682149 in 1940.
If the other number (284xxx) is actually stamped on the back of the cylinder and does not match the number on the underside of the grip butt then the cylinder has likely been replaced.

The serial number is C2315xx
.38 Military & Police made in 1953.
Value depends on condition but runs from about $250 well used to around $500 in "like new".

the serial number (on the bottom of the grip) is 438XX
Assuming it is a 32 cal Tip-Up the SN would make it a Model One and a Half 2nd Issue. They are chambered in .32 Rimfire Long. SN's ran from 26301 in 1868 to 127100 in 1875.
Value based on 2006 pricing was $300 in good to $800 in excellent to $1500 in "as new".

S/N: N283XXX
The N2xxxxx range ran from 1974 to 1977.
Production started in 1954. Became the model 28 in 1957, model 28-1 in 1960, 28-2 in 1961 and 28-3 in 1982. Production ended in 1986.
Matte blue is the standard finish. A couple dozen left the factory with nickel finish for the FHP (Florida HP) and are marked as such. Another 5 (satin nickel) made as dealer samples.

Ok, sorry about that - try K284xxx. The gun had large aftermarket grips that I had to remove to get to the Serial #. The other number I mentioned is located in the yoke/crane area. The one on the butt of the frame matches what is on the cylinder. Thanks for the help!

If you would please S&W experts: My latest acquisition is a 66-5, serial number CDY03XX.

My uneducated guess is 1980's production, judging by the lack of the lock, and the frame mounted firing pin.

try K284900
K-22 Masterpiece made in 1956.
SN's ran from K266165 to K288988 that year. The other numbers are assembly numbers.
66-5, serial number CDY03XX
The dash 5's ran from 1998 to 2002. CDYxxxx would be Febuary 2000.
The lock started with the dash 6. The frame mounted firing pin with the dash 5.

Hi All,

I'm the volunteer at the Washington National Guard Museum and we have a Smith & Wesson M&P Model 10, serial # C238XXX in the collection. Yesterday the property book officer for Camp Murray (HQ for the Washington National Guard) came in and said for their records they needed the year it was manufactured for their records. Wanted the information yesterday along with the same thing on several other firearms. Just looked at her and said it would take a few days to track it down.
Anyone here that can tell me the year it was made? Would greatly appreciate it. Did see earlier in this thread that The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has this info. Will eventually in the next few months be getting that for my reference library but can't wait that long to get this info.
Thanks for the help.

Thank you for the education. I had thought the frame mounted firing pins had started early than that.

My husband just received one of his father's guns. He was a sheriff, but was told this wasn't his service revolver. Here are pictures of the gun and the original box. Does anyone have information about it? Thanks

I don't think the box is correct for the revolver. A model 66-1 should have a shrouded ejector rod and adjustable rear sight. Also the box has the notation RR (for red ramp front sight) and the revolver in photo doesn't seem to have a red sight insert.

The revolver pictured appears to be a model 65. I'd suggest checking the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame. The grips will have to come off in order to see the serial number.
