Smith and Wesson serial number search

Derekadavis: 1971, according to the SN. Must have been one of the earliest ones produced, as the book says they were introduced approx. 1972.

Where is Model number?

Where do I find the Model number for my Smith & Wesson revolver? On the left side of the barrel it says Smith & Wesson. On the right side of the barrel it says "22 long rifle CTG." The serial number on the butt of the handle is "K-577xx." The stocks are bone. A family inventory calls it Model K-22, but I don't see anything on the gun to that effect.

rosatally - Your K-22 Masterpiece ("22" in this case is not a model number, but part of the name) was manufactured in 1948, which means it doesn't have a model number - S&W didn't start using model numbers until 1957. Your gun became the Model 17, so is sometimes referred to as a "pre-Model 17." If it did have a model number, it would be stamped in the frame cutout that's exposed when the cylinder is swung out. The "bone" stocks (ivory, perhaps? - now that would be special) are not original.

hello everyone, I just recently found an old smith and wesson that my father used to own, unfortunately he is not around to let me know what caliber this revolver is, so i was hoping to find some information here in this forum. It is a 5 shot, hand ejector, top break, revolver. on the top of the barrel it says "smith and wesson springfield mass. u.s.a. pat'd jan 24 65" and below that it says "july 11 65 aug 24 69 reissue july 25 71 may 11 80 jan 3 82". Also the serial number 71xxx (with a star at the end of the five numbers) is on the bottom of the handle and on the cylinder it's just the 71xxx. thank you.

Model Search

I have 3 S&W's that I recently acquired. Can someone tell me the approx. mfg. date?

442 - Serial BRB6xxx
66 - Serial BKN7xxx
36 - Serial DAN8xxx

Thanks much.

Cherns,

Your decription (break-top, not hand ejector) and serial number leaves four possible models.
If it has an exposed hammer then it could be a:
1) .32 Double Action 4th Model. SN's ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909.
2) .38 Double Action 2nd Model. SN's ran from 4001 in 1880 to 119000 in 1884.

If it's a hammerless model then:
1) .32 Safety Hammerless 1st Model. SN's ran from 1 in 1888 to 91417 in 1902.
2) .38 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model. SN's ran from 42484 in 1890 to 116002 in 1898.

laytonj1,

thank you for such a quick answer. It does have a hammer so now at least I know that it could either be the 4th or 2nd model. I will also post some pics of it in the morning.

Model 66-2

I recently bought a Model 66 Combat Magnum...a 66-2. I would really like to know when it was made, shipped or any info available. The serial number is 173Kxxx. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FirstS&W: 1982. Just curious - does it have a pinned barrel? Your SN is near the middle of the range for that year, which is when the pinned barrel was dropped.

I am fairly certain that it is the .32 4th Model because the length of the cylinder is slightly less than 1''.
Correct.
The nominal cylinder length on the 32's were .92". On the 38's it was 1.21".

Wow. Great forum!

After looking around I believe this
will put me on the right track until
I can afford the official letter.

10-6
C914xxx

Many thanks!

S&W .44 Mag Mod 29

A hock shop wants to sell me a S&W Mod 29 Serial S217394 (Blue) 6 1/2" barrel. Guy keeps calling it a "4 screw" model but 4 screws are not visible on the side plate (may be covered by the grips). May refer to a screw elsewhere. Looks and operates great but has that "aura" of something pre-1970 like something my grandpappy would have owned. How old? Should I be drooling on his counter? Thor
