Smith and Wesson serial number search

It is a .38 S&W cartridge. DA with a hammer.
And with a serial number of 58530 it would be a .38 Double Action 2nd Model.
Serial numbers ran from 4001 in 1880 to 119000 in 1884.

Jim

Edit to add:
I have found out that the .32 and .38 break tops are pre-1899 but that is all.
Actually, the .32 break tops were made up till 1937 and the .38's till 1940.

S&W 38 special ctg question, please help

Hello. I am new to the forum. Recently inherited a gun from my grandfather who passed. Would like a little info on it if possible.

It is marked

MARCAS REGISTRADAS ... it isn't a shiny material, wood butt.

Smith and Wesson stamp on the side and all over it.

It is a 6 shooter ... cylinder pops out on the side.

Serial number is - 986XX - 5 digits. It also has a C to the left.

Inside the cylinder where it closes it looks to have a k and a 1299 randomly positioned

When do you all think it was made, what might the approximate value be not that I am going to sell it? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

How about a S&W Model M&P Revolver SN# S 845XXX....?
Serial numbers ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948.

Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.
Value depends on condition. Roughly $250 well used to ~$500 like new.

Heirloom 38 S & W 2" Nickel plated revolver

Hi folks,

If I may pick the brains of the Smith & Wesson folks here, I just inherited my first Smith which belonged to my Grandfather. The left side of the 2" barrel is engraved with "Smith & Wesson" and under that has 38 S & W.SPC.CTG On the right side of the frame, below the cylinder is has " Made in U.S.A."

The serial number is 608XXX whis is stamped on the butt strap and also on the end of the cylinder. 24929 is stamped in the inside of the crane. It has the S & W engraved trademark on the frame and on the gutta percha grips. I've attached a couple of photos.. Thanks for any help you can render, it is much appreciated.

UPDATE:

I got a bit impatient and called S & W to see if I could pinpoint a range of years and learned a few things. Any S & W with an "alpha" character in the serial number is post WW II as they becan putting a "V" in the number during that time and kept it going afterward with other alpha characters. The Historian said that my revolver might date from the early 1930's, but that snub nose configurations were rare then ie special order. So the estimate for mine is 1935 plus or minus a few years. I'll probably go ahead and order the "historical letter" to keep with the gun.

Help me date a model 36

I just got a model 36 with serial number 551721. The factory tells me it is a 1960-61 manufacture. But some of the stuff I am reading here says that can't be. Does anyone know what year of model 36 I have.

Don't you just love conflicting answers....
Per the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, serial numbers for the 36 ran from 295000 in 1962 to 786544 in 1969.
The flat thumbpiece ended in 66 and the diamond shape around the screwhole on the grips ended in 68.

Thanks

I will take the word of the catalog and estimate that the gun was no later than 66 but after 62. What kind of response you think I would get if I paid the factory the 50 buck they want for a letter of authenticity? Kind of makes you wonder........

Just call them again. If you get a different person you might get a different answer.

The factory letter will be the date the gun was shipped from the factory and who it was shipped to.

Jim

Yikes

That is what I am afraid of. But I think I will call and ask them once again. I am not sure if paying the $50 dollars is worth knowing the specific date the gun was shipped and to whom.

I have a Model 37 no dashes or anything with a serial number of 280503. I figured that number was low enough it put it in the 60s, but what do you think the age of that gun is.......as you probably can tell I like mid sixties wheel guns like the these J frames. Thank for your help.

36's and 37's (and 38,49 and 50) shared the same serial numbers. So, 1957 ended at 125000 and 1962 started at 295000. I would guess 1961 on your 37.
But it would be interesting to see what S&W says.

Jim

Called the factory again

I called the factory again to ask on the 36 and they now say 1965. And while I had them on the line I asked about the 37 and they put that date around 1960-61. Whew!!!!

Sounds like the person you got this time actually looked them up. Those dates sound correct and fit within the serial number blocks listed in the SCSW.

Anyone know the production year for a S&W Model 60-14 .357 Mag, serial number DTE2214? It's got an internal lock so I know it's 2001 or later. Thanks in advance if anyone finds it.

S&W Model 60-14 .357 Mag, serial number DTE2214?
The current edition of the SCSW only covers serial numbers up to 2004. Yours was made after that. You'd need to contact S&W customer service to get the DOB over the phone for free.

I've been loading up some lighter rounds to take to the range and see how she operates. Hard to believe that I've had it for four days and haven't done so already...this "work" thing is getting in the way of my playtime.
