The "S" prefix M&P's were the first models produced after WWII. Serial numbers ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948.
Since most all of them still used the prewar long throw hammers, they have a 25% premium over later post war M&P's. As long as it's in decent shape with little finish wear then $400 is a good price.

I was hoping some one could tell me the age of a couple smith and wessons that were my grandfathers. first one is a model 41 serial number A 197***, the second is a model 29-2 serial number N 690**. I was also hoping some body could help with the age of a walther ppk/s serial number 251***S by interarms. I have looked on the web a lot and cant justify buying the book for just two hand guns. Any information would be greatly appreciated thank you

Tom - ya gotta give us something to work with. It's OK to replace the last couple digits with "x"s, but we need the first part of the SN to find a year for you. Also, 64-2s were made from 1977 to 1988, and the SN will either have a letter "D" in there preceded by one or two numerical digits, or will be of the "modern" type that starts with three letters, followed by 4 digits. No 64s were made with 5-digit (only) SNs. Take the SN from the bottom of the grip frame - other numbers that may be stamped in the frame cutout are not necessarily serial numbers

Serial number data in the SCSW for later model S&W auto pistols is very incomplete. Pretty much nothing on the 1911's. Best I can tell you is the 4506 is between 94 and 99.
If you call S&W customer service they will give you the DOB for both guns over the phone for free.

SCSW doesn't appear to list any SNs starting with "3D" - 1D, 2D, and 4D up to 30D, (and even D3), but no 3D. And there's no gap in the sequence of years listed where "3D" would fit, i.e., the list goes right from 2D99999 (end of 1978) to 4D00001 (start of '79). Mod. 10-8 was introduced in 1977 and replaced by the 10-10 in 1988, if that helps.

FlyFish, While 3D doesn't appear in the manual, the S&W historian said that 3D was just a continuation of 2D. So in 1978 they had a very large production year.

S&W 39-2

I friend of the family is in ill health and may sell of his guns.

He has a S&W 39-2 serial A6372xx.
I only examined it quickly but think it is the alloy frame model. I didn't know what he had or that this model was both alloy & steel versions until I got back home.

Looking for info & it's year?

Thanks,
Bill

Serial numbers ran from 295000 in 1962 to 786544 in 1969. Your SN of 3674XX is likely 63/64.

Need to know caliber and is it a double or single action. Trigger guard or no trigger guard. Hammer or hammerless.

Yes, it's a Chiefs Special (pre model 36) made in 1952.

1980.
It would be an alloy frame with steel slide. The all steel versions numbered less than a thousand, were 39 no dashes and fell in a narrow serial number range.
39's are excellent and very reliable guns.
