Do you realize the if Einstien(sp?) were an elementary student today he would be put on Ridalin as being overly hyper? Walt Disney was a poor student too, today he would have been diagnosed with some sort of mental illness. I have always wondered what future great minds we are doping up now-a -days?

Just to be clear...are you suggesting that "pills" (I assume we are talking about ADHD meds) inhibit imagination? I'm not sure I'd agree with that when discussing kids who's brain chemistry benefit from these medicines.

Certainly not in all cases but I've watched friends of mine in middle and high school slowly lose their exuberance and creative abilities once being put on ADD drugs. Whether or not these kids actually had chemical imbalances is beyond me; some of them seemed to have no problem focusing, they were simply extroverted and talkative students that the teachers, and I'm assuming their parents as well, couldn't put up with.

I'm not saying that these drugs inhibit imagination and creativity in all or even most cases, regardless of brain chemistry, but it does seem to happen. I realize there are people out there that genuinely have these disorders and require these drugs to fix whatever chemical imbalances are causing them but it makes me wonder how many ask if it's even worth it.

Also, have you noticed that the vast majority of kids on these drugs are boys? Also, most kids on these drugs are from single parent households, mainly mother only. While the best situation for any kid is two good parents, I think male children really miss something from not having a father or at least a good strong male role model.

Going back to my childhood again. I would mind my mother, but not to the extent of my dad. If my mom said it was time to go to bed, I might try to agrue the point. When dad said it was time, I rarely debated the issue.

Some of these are suffering from a chemical inbalance. most are suffering from an inbalance of proper upbringing.
 
Roy, for the most part, I agree with you.


As some studies are beginning to show, ADHD can also be greatly affected by diet alone. But I think the type of entertain kids now partake in are the opposite of concentration enhancing.

I have noticed this correlation; and you make a point that is valid for many of the situations, but there are times that the kids "imbalance" or "disability" interferes with the dynamics of the parents' relationship. If you look at parents of kids who have severe cognitive problems (mental retardation) you will find a very high rate of divorce. Sad commentary IMO. But; that said, your take on the situation is probably more often correct than not.
 
People used to have different personalities. Now we have mental disorders that require money and mind altering drugs to "cure" us.
 
Those who's "personalities" were bad enough were kept in dungeons, "back in the old days".

I think a happy medium for mental health care is probably needed.

Medical Testing

If you go to your doctor and request Vicadin, he will probably want to diagnose a condition for that drug. In fact, most drug prescriptions require a diagnosis backed by some type of test. That could be a blood test, an X-Ray, MRI, or whatever.

Most kids that are on Ridalin were given that drug with little or no testing. If a brain chemical inbalance is involved, wouldn't a brain scan and lab work be needed to properly diagnose it. Come on, giving a mind altering drug without a scientific diagnosis doesn't make sense to me.

Many doctors feel pressured by parents and school administrators to prescribe these drugs. As a teacher I had access to confidential student records. Never did I see medical testing as part of the perscritpion.

So maybe there are kids with defective brain chemistries. Maybe they do need drugs to counter that. But why are they not being dignosed beyond an office visit and a parental chat.

It would be like going to a doctor for a belly ache. Without further testing he determines you have cancer and puts you on chemotherapy. That is what happens to many of our drugged kids.

That's odd, because as a teacher I did (however it was contained in the special education records.) It's not a medical diagnosis however; it's a behavioral scale with input from parents, teachers, and doctor derived testing.

I guess that's a step.

Maybe we can agree on this: Doctor's who prescribe mind altering drugs without proper diagnosis/through testing should be stripped of their license to practice medicine.
 
They Do

Trust me, many do perscribe them. You can't tell me that every kid on Ridalin has had a brain scan and blood work done. With HMO's you can hardly get an X-Ray.
 
Immunity?

Another thing I noticed is that few Asian American students have ADHD. I guess they are immune to this illness. They usually have straight A's and high scores in standardized testing. They also do quite well in Engineering and medical courses.

Maybe they will find a vacine for ADHD.:D
