Sexual Ads

Quote: "I think the talk of "family values" is dishonest, because it isn't even behavior that could be said to be practiced by the majority of American males."

True, perhaps. However are "family values" as a concept at fault? Are the values themselves at fault or the perception of hypocrisy of those who value them? If it’s hypocrisy, I share that common dislike.

Many high school students cannot make change without using a cash register or solve simple numeric problems without a calculator. Yet it would be foolish of me to blame "mathematics" or those who advocate more emphasis in teaching it, simply because so many lack proper math skills.

I’m not ‘teary-eyed’ over the general lack of either of these desirable qualities and since we really don’t know much about each other, your judging my adherence to family values or my grasp of math skills would be a bit presumptive. I would not presume to call your character into question, I don’t know you. It would not be any of my business even if I did know you!

Back to the original topic – I am disappointed at the proliferation of this type of advertising. I don’t like the advertisement where a tampon is used to stop a leak in a rowboat. I don’t care to hear about hemorrhoid creams, adult diapers, or condoms.

I think it’s a shame that coarseness has become so commonplace. EVEN IN ME! I wish that kids as young as 8 (and adults who act like ignorant children) had more respect for themselves and others than to spew vile language in public.

If I feel things have gone far enough for me, I will no longer buy the magazine, watch the program or linger in public. I might write a letter, or speak-up. I might even urge my friends to do the same. If you agree, I would urge you to do the same. If you don’t or don’t care, ignore them and me.

Down Right Fraud

The February 2006 issue of "Guns and Ammo" has a full page ad for a male enhancement product. Forget the poor taste. These products are absolutely fradulent. Not only are they lowering their standards, they are running an ad that sells a product that is a total rip off. Makes you wonder about their other stuff.

I agree, but stop short in blaming the advertising world.

I'm surprised that some forum members want less government interference in the realm of #2, but more in the realm of #1 (amendment). Freedom comes in the form of responsibility. There will always be people who can't handle that responsibility, but why should that limit those who can (ie. restrict our children's access to that type of material)? Don't like scantily clad ads? Don't buy the magazine. Don't want your kids to see it? Don't give them access.

We have heard the debate that the Roman Empire fell to hedonism (at least with the ruling class; not the denizens). What about the debate of governments that aggressively controlled media? No thanks for me.

Sex and Guns

First off, I don't see a problem with it. I'm not sure who the target audience is for these ads, but I suspect a good portion of the folks they target are readers older than 50. I haven't seen any obscene ads yet. They seem to focus on a man and his wife which I suppose would be a big issue in any marriage.

Secondly, the Romans didn't have a huge STD problem so sure-they were somewhat loose in their sexual morality. Then came Columbus who took a bunch of diseases over to the new world but brought one back with him (Syphillis I believe), which really messed things up here, and so the natural response was to maintain some sort of emphasis on monogamy and hence, reduce the spread of disease.

I hope I don't need these drugs, but if I ever do, I'd be glad to find the information I need without having to pick up a copy of the New England Journal of Medicine or the JAMA.

Just thoughts.

I find it amazing that some folks here are experts in many fields. They should try out for Jeopardy.
Join the party - read a book.

Lizzie, I think the presumption that anything sexual is automatically immoral is where the disconnect is. Sexuality is normal adult (and teen) behavior. That doesn't mean it should be without limits, but it does mean that you shouldn't need to hide from it. Morallity is making good decisions, which can only be a rational process. I would HOPE a normal 13 year old would think about sex. I want that 13 year old to be able to seperate his desires from damaging actions.

For the record, I think these ads are stupid. But I think a lot of advertising is stupid. I just hate the notion that the only way of dealing with information is to hide from it, and that includes children. Their morals come from you, not an ad. I don't want societal controls to help the weak minded - we could use some Darwinian selection.

If Nike can make a kid lust for their shoes, be certain that most prime time shoows can cause other desires that are not healthy in children.

The bar of morality has been lowered.

The point is that what is "healthy" and "moral" is completely subjective. You may think it's unhealthy to expose a 12 year old to the realities of sex but others may disagree. Others may feel that insulation and sheltering is far more unhealthy. You have your ideas as to where the bar of morality is but others may feel different. Morality, values, "good and evil" are not quantifiable measures and are solely dependant on the ideals of the observer.

Forget kids for a moment. What if an adult finds such ads offensive? If such an adult picks up a Playboy or a Swimsuit Edition, and they are offended, they have serious problems in the mental department. But if a person picks up Field and Stream, and there is a full color, in your face ad about a video on how to be a better stud then something is wrong. Not with the person, but the publication.

And I always thought that hunting and fishing were the last bastion of wholesome entertainment for all ages. I realize that one magazine does not make the sport. But it is part of it. What is next, shotgun shell boxes that come with adult playing cards?

The Swimsuit Addition is a non-optional part of your subscription to a sports magazine. I don't see how that is any different, except that it is in its own cover rather than intersperced with the rest of the sports articles. But if you are offended or not, it's still coming to your door.

The question then is; what is a person who is easily offended by the current state of US culture supposed to do? What people have always done when offended by the crassness of opera, the nudity of classic sculpture, intolerable sin of writing in the vernacular rather than Latin: Run away and hide.

As a society, we currently have a moderately high interest in sex and it is going to be hard to avoid in print media, movies, television, museums, public debate and textbooks. It is entertainment, health, self help, anthropology, history and art. In other words, you can't avoid it without leaving the society.

Some take this to mean that the society is about to collapse. Some take this as a loosening up of unhealthy, stodgy attitudes. You can choose either, but the latter makes it much easier to get along and enjoy life in America.

I have a funny idea about what "wholesome" is. To me, it is about family and love and being a full person. I don't know why wholesome has come to mean the exclusion of the illicit.

But if a person picks up Field and Stream, and there is a full color, in your face ad about a video on how to be a better stud then something is wrong. Not with the person, but the publication.
I would feel the same way. But then I would make it a point not to pick up that magazine anymore. No harm, no foul. Seeing an ad for some sex product isn't going to damage me emotionally, it isn't going to reach into my pocket and steal my wallet, it isn't going to give me cancer, it isn't going to sneak into my home and kill my cat. It isn't going to blow up the school or turn my next door neighbor into a heroin addict. At worst I'll be offended.

Big deal.

And I always thought that hunting and fishing were the last bastion of wholesome entertainment for all ages.
Well some people would disagree that exposing young children to death is unhealthy. Not that I agree but it's no different that believing exposing young children to sexual issues is unhealthy.

a line does have to be drawn somewhere. otherwise there will be ads for sexual products in 'sports illustrated for kids' or 'popular mechanics for kids'.
heck, 'teen cosmo' is already as racy as the regular cosmo mag. is that who you want instructing your kids about sexual matters?

i think theres a time and place for everything. a hunting magazine shouldnt necessarily be used to hawk sex ads.

just like a restaurant that tries to cater to familys shouldnt have half naked women serving your orders. if i want to drool over a half naked woman theres a time and place for that. not when i'm trying to eat a burger at the table next to a family of five.

but heres what i truly disagree with: the completely false advertising of said sexual products. have you noticed the ads in the gun magazines about pills that make your vision better? its virtually the same ad as the one that makes men 'perform better' in the bedroom. it wouldnt surprise me if its the exact same pill. if you have a product that works, great. but 99.9% of the products those whoremongers sell dont work.

Dropping a baby into a pot of boiling water is evil.

Holy **** thats disturbing... I honestly hope you didn't actually have to see this. :(

Anyway, I could make a case for blatant sexual ads not being appropriate in public places and on shows targeted to children (not like it matters since the actual cartoons are so full of innuendo and outright phallic sh!t its scary. What screwed up kid wants to see the new Batman cartoons with a giant pointy triangle for a dick).

But people who want to ban porn and then turn around and tell me they are pro-gun are simply stupid. They haven't thought the situation though properly have they? Guns cause far more deaths then porn, rip apart perhaps as many families although thats debatable. Why don't we ban them again?

Freedom!

I agree freedom of speech only goes so far, you can't yell fire in a crowded theater, you can't dispense secrets to the enemy etc. But comeon now its porn.

Prove to me that porn causes a lot of family breakups and whatnot and maybe I will rethink my stance on it, but more likely those breakups are caused by reactions ingrained into peoples minds by people like you.

The line is already drawn. Advertisers aren't going to bother trying sell herbal supplement, condoms and vibrators to children because they won't buy them.

It would be as pointless as a car ad aimed at a 10 year old, and no business is going to throw away money on such a ridiculous idea.

As I said from the outset, you find these ads in these magazines because enough fellow readers actually use the ads to buy the stuff. If you want a source to the problem, that's it.

If no one liked the magazine, OR no one liked the product advertised, you wouldn't see either.

I'd like to share one other notion about capitalism with you all:

Magazines have only so much advertising space - they keep it to a set percentage of the printed pages. Given that, why can they not fill the magazine with on-topic advertisements? Do you think they're rejecting ads for tents, guns and scopes in favor of sex stuff? Of course not.

If Winchester products got your support in the marketplace, Winchester could afford more ad space, taking it away from off topic ads. Instead, Winchester is going out of business, and herbal supplement dealers are making fortunes.

So I would take all this as a warning sign that companies who would like to advertise hunting equipment in hunting magazines don't see as much point in bothering as companies who want to enlarge your manhood.

The hunting industry can only support the hunting magazines if they are supported themselves. If you aren't supporting the hunting industry with your purchases, it is going to come back and haunt you in this way. So buy a scope and tent, and tell the companies where you saw their ad, and where you didn't.

Yahtzee! We have a winner!:D

Handy, you hit the perverbial nail on the head.
The shooter has become the target!

I've lurked and joined other shooting sites but this one has by far the most litererate, articulate and thoughtful posters I've ever encountered.
If we're not careful we'll lose that "big dumb guy with green teeth" reputation which was so arbitrarily bestowed on us!

Sex and the shooting sports for $100.00, Alex!

shotgun shell boxes that come with adult playing cards?

Way cool. Where do I sing up?

And if you find any kind of material offensive, no one is forcing you to look at it. It's in your face. Everywhere. YOU, are not going to turn it off. Quit being so pruitanical. Have a talk with your son and explain to him what the real world is like. He's gonna have to live in after you're gone. sundog

REDWORM
You said that there is no such thing as right and wrong in morality. I beg to differ with you. Remember John Kerry kept making the point because of his superior intellicet he was able to see things in shades of gray. He did not believe in the right and wrong thinking. In other words, that is the liberal mind set. Conservatives lack brain power so all they see the world is in black and white.

You may take this as insult. I am sorry if you do. But the extreme left wingers want us to believe that there is no societal morality, it is up to each individual. These are the folks that want to give pedaphiles two month jail sentences. After all, if an adult feels that sex with a child is morally acceptable who are we to condemn him.

There are things that are wrong. It takes courage to confront that and call it what it is.

There are things that are wrong. It takes courage to confront that and call it what it is.

What's your solution? More government intervention in media? Who's the liberal now?

Hypocrite. Courage is teaching your kids the difference between healthy and unhealthy choices.

I have always agreed with the notion that parents are first and foremost responsible for their children's upbringing. One of those responsibilities is to ensure that the smut peddlers do not get away with it.

Every day I see young girls exposing their underwear and various other parts of their bodies in public. If a gal is eighteen so be it. But I see thirteen and fouteen year old dressed that way in public. Often they are with their parents. Malls have become a Disneyland for pedaphiles. Where did they get the idea for this? Not out of the thin blue air. I know that a parent should tell their minor children what is and what is not appropriate behavior. Many of them also have gotten the idea that exposed body parts is fine.

No, I detest government intervention in most things. One thing that I do expect from our government is protection.I can't think of any segment of society that needs protection more then our children.
