Self Defense ammo for .45 ACP?

The Marines don't use FMJ by choice they are made to use them because The USA generally follows Rules of War even though they didn't sign them. However some units in the Military do use H.P. ammo. I have a few rounds of G.I Black Talons in my inventory.

.45 FMJ is a good stopper and doesn't have serious overpenetration at all.
But .45 JHP is a better stopper.
As long as the gun runs well with JHP use that.

I am not so sure about that, Boberama.

The .45 ACP 230 gr. FMJ @ 825-875 fps produces 24-26 inches of penetration against calibrated 10% ordnance gelatin and 19-21 inches of penetration against the human anatomy, and in the shootings that I've seen, it routinely exits the bad guys.

I have no problems with those who wish to use hardball in their .45s, especially if their pistols won't function with JHPs, but the use of such ammo really demands that the shooter be aware of innocents downrange.

My preference for ammo regardless of caliber runs to the "heavy for caliber" stuff and in the .45ACP I prefer the Hornady 230 gr. +P JHP (9096) because it offers expansion to about 1.5x caliber and penetration to 14+ inches.

Disagree with your builder.

He either hasn't done research or refuses to believe it.

It is ideal compared to a round nose .38.

Smaug,

Yeah,

The .38 Spcl 158 gr LRN is a real deep penetrator. Hardly optimal.

I agree with your assessment about the/any builder of a .45

It has been proven by many builders (A. Swenson, Wilson, Baer, etc.) time and again that the 1911 platform is quite capable of handling JHPs if just a little care is taken in its construction. No reason to accept anything less.

Doesn't matter what ammo you use or what gun or what caliber. Knowing what or who is behind the target is always crucial. Doesn't matter what bullet is used or how well it penetrates because you have no idea how many times you are going to miss.

what model taurus is that? is that a factory grip? do you like the gun? is it 100% reliable with regular hollowpoints? is it a good beginner gun for IDPA? i carry a 24/7 pro .45 and get a bunch of crap for it from alot of people but i love everything about it. big taurus fan. are there "custom" or performance parts available, and , if so, where? sorry about all the questions and high jacking the thread. thanks in advance !

My .45 is loaded with golden saber 185gr. Thats my primary defense load. There are tons of quality bullets on the market these days. Pick one you like and that functions well in your gun.

+1
The 185gr Golden Saber feeds amazingly in my Remington R1 and the recoil is lighter than 230gr FMJ.

Golden Saber 185gr JHP +P...

A forum member stated he knew a sworn LE officer who used a "200gr +P Golden Saber".
To my knowledge, Big Green only markets or sells a 185gr JHP +P in the Golden Saber line.

For some unknown reason, Remington also does not list the "bonded" Golden Saber handgun rounds in the 2011 product catalog either. Odd.
I stand by my remarks too concerning the use of PowRball, EFMJs or milspec factory ball(230gr).
Good stuff by Jim M too. ;)

I'm looking at a bunch of 230 Grain Golden Saber as I type this, and it's what's in my gun.

I'm not sure, but I think Golden Saber only comes in two weights, 185 Grain and 230 Grain.

justjim75, sorry man...I know cerebral is just trying to help.

But my vote is against the Taurus....I'm sorry. If you really want to see the majority of the votes on this forum...Post a new thread in the "Semi-auto" forum and make it a poll about the Taurus 1911 and see the feedback there. Before you say anything or even worse do anything, do that first. Please.

I am very against it. Are there people happy with it? Yes...is it a risk? Yes, as is with any handgun manufacturer. Is it a higher risk with Taurus? YES...I live in Miami where they're made, fixed and whatever. I am against it bottom line. Post a thread for opinions on your next purchase before you do so. I just don't want to see any fellow gun enthusiast get let down.

Is he really? You too? :/

Well alright guys...if you've have a good run with them, more power to you both. Congrats, and I hope they stay reliable and good and never let either of you down. Ever.

And I mean that. Shoot straight, stay safe.

i got into sort of a "battle" in the "taurus quality" thread and we got it closed. i have 5000 + rounds through my 24/7. there are 2 kinds of cheap steel cased ammo that it wont feed well but with brass it has proven to be trustworthy. i love my gun and carry it daily. my shooting buddies have 9 of them and all are quality, reliable weapons. are there lemons? yes. do mechanical things break? yes. i would compare taurus to hyundai. they started off cheap and got a bad rep. then they improved quality and have a warrenty to back it up. now they're just inexpensive. i get crap for being a hardcore mini 14 guy too, no AR's in my safe. isn't that the beauty of being an American though guys? we have the freedom of choice and can spend our hard earned $$ (after they tax us to death, and then waste it) on whatever we want. taurus bashing will go on as long as they make them. no i dont think i'll start a new thread asking about quality. too many people will post that have no REAL experience with them.

True, and yes God Bless America. And on your last note, I want to go on record saying that I have had personal experience with them. I wish it was the same as yours. I'm glad yours went well. Also, nice analogy with the Hyundai thing. ;) congrats, and didn't know you were a Taurus owner, I thought you were a new gun owner. Don't recall the thread. Well I do, but didn't know you started it. Well awesome man, congrats. It won't change then and you are right. Just don't expect me to go followin' you around now. ;) lol

i see on your sig you have a couple of glocks. people cant believe i dont like them either. hehe. if you dont mind, which taurus did you have trouble with?
