Rossi Ranch Hand

What's to wait for?
You hold the gun in your shooting hand in the same area of the stock nub you'd be using if it had a full stock, bring it up to eye level, align the sights on target, pull the trigger.
Or, you use two hands (either both on the grip section of the stock nub, or one there & the other forward on the fore-end, bring it up to eye level, align sights on target, and pull the trigger. :)

I agree wioth Foggy. I saw it and I want it because it looks cool. I'll find a way to justify it after the fact, if at all.

When I was a kid, i had a plastic toy gun like it, and I can still remember the special sound that Steve McQueen's gun made when he shot it on TV. It was hard to replicate with my voice, but i was convinced I sounded like it every time I shot it.

I bought a winchester lever action 410, and a guy at the shooting club asked why. And I said that every time I shot it, it reminded me of hunting with my single action 410 with my dad. The slight kick, the smell. Priceless!

i want mine in stainless!

Ranch hand

I'm with
Raimius, but I think I'm going for 44 Mag. If the holster is halfway comfortable, I'll take it fishing or when hiking in the wild. It kind of fits like the new derringers in 410. Just got one, and its pretty unweildy. Mybaby finger doesn't know where to go,and gets beaten up when firing. But again, it looks and feels really cool, so I'll adapt. Kinda like women with high heels. They look too sexy not to wear, even when they hurt their feet.

If I remember corrrectly I read a review about them on Gunblast.com. I am of the 30 something generation. Yet I grew up on old westerns. You could not have told me they were old. They were new to me.
It is legal as a handgun the same way the AR and AK hand guns are. They were made that way. I saw a guy at the rnage yesterday with a Thompsons handgun. It had no stock, and the pistol grip. A front sight on a 14 inch bbl. with a forward handle grip, and a rotor mag. It looked like it would be a hoot to shoot, the old ranger way, with no stock on the hip bone firong short burst.

Rossi Ranch Hand rifle/pistol

Fits a niche between handgun and longarm: greater accurate distance than a pistol but more close-quarters-maneuverable than a lever-action rifle. Somewhat concealable as lever-actions go, too. ;)

I want one -- but I'll have to wait 'til 2011 (if America can live that long).:(

.45 Colt all the way, of course.

old thread, couldn't help myself

I pre ordered a Ranch Hand in 44mag. They are supposed to ship Nov 1, but my gun dealer just emailed me and said his jobber said it looks like 3rd or 4th week in October.
Anyway, I will soon have one.
I started looking for holsters and there are many sites selling a black leather replica of Josh Randall's leg holster, but it just looks too flimsy for me. I want to carry it back packing or on my HD when we do a Canyon Ride and Camping event.
So, I chose a back scabbard that can be strapped to a back pack or other frames and can be worn as a straight back scabbard. I feel that it would make a decent survivalist weapon and can be used for hunting small to medium game.
Yes, I have a 44mag revolver, S&S 929 in 4" with a Simply Rugged Sourdough holster, but the Ranch Hand (filled with Hornady LEVERevolution FTX), should be harder hitting out past 25 meters from a 12".
And I have a Winchester 92AE in 44mag with a 16" barrel, saddle ring, and large loop. It is just too long to carry when sitting. Plus, it is a 1972 vintage rifle, I want to keep it near mint, as it is now.
Anyway, here is the back scabbard

This dealer makes other mare leg rigs, too.
You can see them HERE.
I looked at this one, but just couldn't talk myself into liking it.

If anyone is interested, I'll post back after I get to fire the lever action.

ever since I first heard about a "mare's leg" I've been drooling. now someone is finally making one at an affordable price. I'm thinking I'd like a .44 mag but then again it might be uncomfortable to shoot. I have revolvers in .357, .44mag, and .45 colt so it would make a nice companion to any of those but I want a 16" .44 mag carbine and I don't reload yet so between the price of ammo and the power level to me it seems like the .44 is the way to go.

What do the pistol / revolver handloader's say about the 1 in 30" RH twist for the .44 mag. Isn't that a bit faster than the longer bbl twist rate for .44 mag? What say you.

I'm thinking that a Ranch Hand would make a great bedside "bump-in-the-night" gun....that 10" barrel would squeeze the best performance out of any load...and, if you empty the mag, it would make a decent wood & steel blunt instrument....definitely have to get one now....

A calculated marketing program aimed directly at us baby boomers growing up in the 50s and 60s. I don't think there was boy on my block who wouldn't have given a left something or other for a copy of Josh's mare's leg. We didn't know enough to realize that what he was carrying in the bandolier didn't fit. There were more than a few of us who got a twisted sense of history from TV.

As for the marketing program, it appears from previous comments that Rossi/Taurus has done its homework. Totally useless? Probably, but a lot of folks are gonna look so cool! The bandoliers and hats can't be far behind.

Strictly as a gun, my .44-40 Chiappa shoots quite accurately out to 75 yards.
As a defensive tool, it's slow, cumbersome, and awkward to use efficiently in aimed fire with any speed whatever.
You have to use two hands to operate it, you have to break the firing grip & position to cycle it, it's markedly heavier than a revolver or pistol, doesn't maneuver quickly in hand like a smaller real handgun, and if I didn't say it earlier- it's slow.

Last ditch, far-from-first-choice, it could offer some protective capability, but any gain in velocities from its 12-inch barrel is more than lost in overall efficiency.

I'm also in line for a Rossi, and as a 1950s baby boomer I wanted a Mare's Leg for 50 years before I finally got one, so I'm not trying to put anybody off from buying it.
I would just suggest that anybody considering betting their life on the thing should re-consider very carefully and look elsewhere.
This is a poor choice for a night bumper.

Denis

I wouldn't have it for a "bump in the night" gun but it is a fun looking gun which I ordered one (38/357). I have several guns to go to, this is just a fun, worked all weekend on OT gun, I deserve it gun.
Anyone seen a holster pattern to make my own?

This one's a toy that COULD be used in a pinch for self-defense, however inefficiently, as opposed to a defensive piece that could also be used recreationally.
A .22 target pistol COULD be used for defense, but it's a poor choice, regardless of how much you like it.

I'm not normally into "cool" as a reason to own any firearm, but in this case "cool" is reason enough on its own. :)

It CAN hunt, and it CAN defend, but there are so many better options available that don't handicap you.
On the other hand, to us old fans of the Mare's Leg and the U.N.C.L.E. Special, there's very little else out there that has such a high Cool Factor.

I had a toy version as a kid, too (along with a Rifleman levergun), these make a lot more noise! :D

Totally agree: A fine "I Deserve It!" gun.

Denis

"Can you say 19th century Mall Ninja?"

I think you mean 'Mall Cowboy':D

I love lever guns. I want one for the cool factor and I think it would work well on the 4-wheeler's gun rack.

I'll take mine in .357mag

Don't you guys remember from the series? It's not a gun. It's just one hell of a club that just so happens to fire 45-70 ammo.

Not intended for home defense, many better choices.
And you only get about two rounds in the mag if you converted a Model 94 in .30-30.

Mare's Leg HOLSTER

Don't have my ROSSI .357 "Ranch Hand" yet, but I did order the custom holster from COCHISE LEATHER, in Cochise, AZ...Quality is VERY HIGH and price was only $140...I opted for the DARK finish and it is BEAUTIFUL! Received it in 2 weeks...

Why is everyone knocking this gun? It's obviously aimed at people just wanting to have fun out in the country. I'd never try to hunt with it, but I'd have myself a pretend saloon gunfight plinking session with that baby. And cut Taurus a break, I love my 92.
