Did anyone else catch tonight's episodes of "Sons of Guns?".

A couple came into the shop asking about a handgun for
home defense. He sold the wife a .22lr? Is this good advice?
Looked like a little Walther p22 suppressed.

Not to mention the .22 will bounce around in your body like ping pong balls and tear up all kinds of organs!

Additionally the ammo is super cheap so she'll get in more practice for less buck.

I'm on the even stranger side,,,

I carry a Taurus .25 ACP semi-auto,,,
Not only do I carry the most derided caliber,,,
I also carry the handgun that most people say is junk.

In my defense I also have the same gun in .22 LR,,,
I practice with the .22 every time I hit the range,,,
I shoot a mag from the .25 at least once a week.

So I'm relatively certain I can hit center mass with it,,,
Ten rounds of .25 hardball placed well,,,
Should ruin a bad guys day.

I can't see why some good Hi-Vel .22 wouldn't do the same.

"Ten rounds of .25 hardball..."

Wouldn't it be more advantageous to try and justify in court the necessity of shooting just 1 or 2 rounds of say, .45 jhp, instead of 10 rounds?? Just saying...

Cops traditionally empty their magazines,,,
But I will double or triple-tap until the attack has ended.

I never meant I would fire ten rounds at once,,,
Then I would only have a polymer rock. ;)

When a .22 was what I had I felt good. I still shoot it a lot and it does nightstand duty when it is "flavor of the day".

I cannot disagree with the recommendation.

Use of deadly force with a firearm outside the line of police duty is simply an on/off switch. The public is not held to the "expert" (I use that term loosely) standards that police officers are (myself being one). CC civilians usually pull until they hear click. As long as the reason for the first shot is justified, no reason to sell yourself short since dead people don't testify :p

Please tell me you're being sarcastic.

If you are not, God help us all.

"...the .22 will bounce around in your body..." Nope. They don't have the velocity or bullet construction to 'bounce around'. Most .22 LR bullets break up when they hit something relatively solid. Flatten and stop altogether if they hit bone.
"...CC civilians usually pull until..." So do most cops. The days of most cops being recreational shooters, having any kind of firearm experience or even having seen a real firearm prior to getting hired are long gone.
"...Is this good advice?..." It is if she takes enough training and practices regularly. A .22 beats a stick or a knife every time, but having the skill to hit what you shoot at matters.

.25 is to slow to do any real damage at least with the .22 it will penetrate deeper than the .25 auto. Why the .25 auto is still in production is beyond me. Aaron I do not doubt your ability to hit center mass I do doubt the ability of the .25 to detour a determined attacker. To many cases I have heard of criminals getting hit with a .25 auto and fleeing to the hospital with 4 to 5 rounds in the chest. And non of the them being fatal or in incapacitating. Bottom line is that if I were be carrying I and given the choice I would carry a .22. You could double tap mags into your attacker with a .25 auto and he would still live or even provide a fight. Just saying. I must say you are rather brave to trust your life to a .25 auto. Your call

I can't stand that show to much BS and to much bad advice nothing worth watching. All they do is make stuff few can afford or need.

Before I met my wife a salesman sold her a baby Berretta in .22. I bought her a Glock 19. The Berretta stays in her minivan in the sunglass holder in the center console. It's the size of a cell phone. That's the only thing good about it. I'd carry it if I had to. I know I wouldn't want to get shot with one. It'd hurt:D. Stopping the fight is the number one priority. Not necessarily killing. If the BG dies from it...sorry for him. Not his day. I imagine that would be something for her or me to live with too. The .25 seems to have had it's day. Not sure why they still make them either. Somebody must be buying them or they wouldn't still make em.

The show is pure entertainment only. Like, dare I say it, "Top Shot"?

It is just possible the .22 comment was tongue-in-cheek.

No further indictments without more evidence, please.
Even assuming the 22 comment was in jest, there are many people who actually believe it. I have heard it lots of times from people who were not joking. A 22 is more likely to be deflected and not take a straight through path but that is where the truth ends. If pointing out the fallacy of this statement could prevent someone who doesn't know any better from purchasing a 22 to protect there family instead of a 38, 9mm, 45, or shotgun under the mistaken belief that it is a more effective round, then I believe we have a responsibility to point it out.

For the record, I am not saying a 22 can't save your tail, but without question there are better choices available.

.25 is to slow to do any real damage
Respectfully disagree. Was hit mid thigh with one in a drive by. Severed main artery, glanced off thigh bone and lodged in my nether region:eek:. It can do damage. As any caliber can. This was from 35-40 ft!

icedog sorry for your injury but not to create a argument but your injury is a exception and not the rule and even though it could kill with the proper shot placement, ask yourself in the drive by was he aiming or was he just taking pot shots. No offense but I highly doubt that the shooter was aiming for the main artery skill no, luck yes. I am just glad you are alright with. your...........nethers:D

But for the record are there better choices absolutely if given the choice would I take a .25 over a .22 IMO no brainer I take the .22 but thats just me now back to your regular scheduled thread.:)

Thank goodness everything is in order:) but thanks. I doubt they were aiming as well, but my point is just I wouldn't want to be hit with a rock nevermind a projectile at a much higher velocity. Any caliber is better than no caliber. All have the potential for damage. Regardless of skill. But in regards to the show, can we agree that portions of this show have been edited? We may not know the exact reasons why a .22 was recommended and accepted.

Meatsaw -- there was a president who was shot with a 22 , the bullet entered , hit a rib and bounced and punctured the lung .A 38 wouldn't have done that. The 22 rimfire has a long history of entering in one place and bouncing and being deflected in various ways. I shot a chuck with a 22 .the bullet killed the chuck instantly but deflected 45* and exited !!
Yes that's the reputation of the 22 rimfire. The other reputation is that the bullet might not cause any noticeble pain or discomfort but you die a few days later !
