Recommend some .40 Autos?

AndaBeer,

Love my CZ75B in 9mm, so much so that I am now thinking about another in .40. But just thinking at this point as I have heard no feedback on the .40 models. The 9s are sweeeeet shooters and priced right.

You won't be disapointed in a CZ75B chambered in .40. I have one and it's every bit as good a shooter as my CZ Mil Surp 9mm.

Due to be released late this year or early 2002, CZ will be releasing Compact models chambered in 40. S&W. Info can be found at CZ-USA

Seriously consider buying the new CZ40B. It's sort of a marriage between a 1911 and a CZ75B. It's being reviewed now in Guns and Ammo Handguns. I bought one about four months ago, right after CZ cut the distribution deal. I really enjoy shooting it. There's more information at http://www.czforum.com.

The 40cal sort of grows on you. I have done my share of complaining about it, but when I add up the expended brass, I shoot it more than my 9mm or .357s. I currently have a Ruger P944, and I guess I must love it, I shoot it enough.

Fixing to add a CZ75BD, or compact version, in 40 cal to the collection. My local dealer is trying to scare one up now. I considered the CZ40B, but have never been comfortable with cocked and locked, prefer double action first (ala revolver) with single action follow up, and love a decocker.

Let me be up front. I prefer 45acp and 9mm pistols. With this said, I do own a TZ75 40 S&W conversion unit, a Glock 23 and 27, Browning MKIII, FN 49, CZ40B, and a Kahr40. I have shot a S&W 4003 and a 411. Of these I will rate the Browning MKIII the best, then the Glock 27, CZ40B, Glock 23, TZ75, S&W 4003, Kahr 40, FN 49, and last the S&W 411.

I just plain do not like the FN49 and yet it has never misfired or proved inaccurate. It just doesn't feel right to me. The S&W 411 was a rental gun and I couldn't hit the broad side of a large barn with it and neither could my shooting partner.

I am convinced the problem with my dislike of the 40 S&W cartridge is based on the 180gr bullets. I find the recoil to be equal to a 45acp 230 gr load. When I have fired lighter bullets the 40 S&W performance tends to improve. Why not shoot the lighter loads? Few shop in the Detroit area carry a variety of weights and the lighter loads are expensive.

Regards,

Richard

The first .40 I bought was a Sig 229:so-so (and traded it away). Then I bought a S&W 4013-not bad. After that, I acquired another Sig 229-liked it less than the first (and by the way, I love Sig Sauer pistols).

But then the day arrived-my H&K Compact .40. Oh yes!! Love at first shot...great balance, reliability, and accuracy. I enjoy shooting this pistol almost as much as my 1911. geegee

I have owned several .40 cals, but today I only own one. I never much cared for the caliber until I settled on my current one.

I bought a Ruger P94 and enjoyed it's reliability but it was ugly and didn't hold a tight group. Traded it in on a Beretta Cougar .45.

I tried a Smith & Wesson 4006 and found it to be a serviceable weapon but felt that it twisted too much in my hand under recoil. I traded it in and got a CZ-75B dual tone in .40 to match my 9mm.

The .40 paled in comparison to the original 9mm in the area of accuracy--it just couldn't group as tight or shoot as true. The CZ-75B in .40 got traded in on an HK USP40 compact.

I finally found a .40 that I like and wouldn't trade for any other. I've shot a friend's Sig 229 in .40, rented a Glock 35 and tried it, and handled the Walther P99 a time or two, but the HK USP 40c is the last .40 for me.

It shoots true to point of aim, groups tightly, has the proper manual of arms, and rides true in my hand.

I've tried almost all of the brands that are out there and the HK was the one for me.

Now why on earth would you want a .40 Nightcrawler?

Just buy a .45 and be done with it.

I'm partial to 9mm myself, but I love the .45.

To almost quote another poster..."lose that sissy .40 caliber and buy yerself a USP45"

I'd say Steyr M40. Mine ROCKS!!

If you are going to get an HK USP, get the full sized, I don't like the compacts.

Otherwise, get a Kahr.

Steyr, more glock than a glock, has tricked out sights. I love mine. Shoot 2" clusters with good match ammo @ 7 yards. 3" with el cheapo ammo. Accurate as hell.

I currently own 2 CZ's in .40 caliber: a CZ 75B and the CZ 40B. The 75B is just as accurate as my CZ 75B in 9mm. The CZ 40B is just plain fun. If I were to choose one over the other. I'd go with the CZ 75B.

FWIW,

I've got a Ruger KP944 in .40, and I love it. I also stayed away from Glocks initially because I've got smaller hands, and I found that the grip on the P40 fit well, and even better with the addition of a Hogue sleeve. The heavy slide and polymer frame seem to absorb a lot of the kick that people complain about with the .40--I fired my buddy's Walther P99 and it was a lot snappier than the Ruger...

Choices

This is what comes to mind as good choices in .40 S&W. Since you already ruled Glock out, I won't list them. I would recommend trying several models out rather than just buying based on what people tell you on the internet. For that reason, I won't mention which one I would choose in your position.

In no particular order:
CZ 75B .40
Sig Sauer P226, P229
HK USP
Ruger P944
Beretta 96
Browning HP

What I'd REALLY like...

...in a semiautomatic pistol?

-High quality 5" 1911, stainless. OR...
-Para Ordnance P14-45, stainless, with plenty of pre-ban mags. OR...
-HK SOCOM .45

All of these are pricey, the SOCOM especially. So, it'll probably end up being what I can afford when the time comes, what I can get a good deal on, etc.

I think the only real reason I'd want a .40, probably, is to get a Sig P226 or BHP (in a little more potent medicine than 9x19).

I just changed to the USP 40 Compact as CCW. The previous one was a Sig 228.

Both are first class pistols, but I consider that I improved the man stopping power with the 40 S&W caliber.

My election of the USP against the Sig 229 (probably the logical transition) was due to the first one is easier and faster to clean (at least to my skill).

I´m very happy with the change: caliber and handgun. (I kept my Sig 228 and it´s not my intention to trade it).

I too am not a fan of the 10mm Kurtz. If you want a 10mm pistol, get an honest to God one, like the Glock 29!!!! However, the round does have it's backers. If you really must have it, then the only platform to get is the Walther P99!!!

Sorry to hear about your Charles dailey 1911 problems. That seems to be the norm with many 1911's and their clones. I would the GLock series (22.23.27, 35) if you want a 40 followed by the sig series 229, 229,239 followed by the HK USP followed by the Beretta Cougar or 96.
