There's a Glock 26 on my hip. It's unloaded (new holster), though a ten round mag of Winchester RA9MMJHP's is in my pocket.

The Gruesome Twosome

In my nightstand: Glock 23c loaded with 13 rounds of Winchester .40s&w Supreme Elite 165 grains.

Next to my bed: Browning BPS, high capacity (6+1), 20" barrel, loaded with 7 shells of Winchester Super-X 12ga 3" 00buck

(My 1st post and I'm excited to be here) My nearest pieces are a S&W 940( This one's currently on duty and filled w/Hornady TAP)S&W 19-3(I alternate between Pow'rball .357 and Critical Defense .38 when this one's on duty), and a Judge that spits Remington Express birdshot when I'm in a light-hearted mood:).

CZ P-07 Duty loaded with 16 rounds of Winchester Ranger Bonded 147gr. Plus I have a back up magazine with 15 rounds of Winchester USA 147gr hps.

I also have a ruger 10/22 sitting here. I don't count on it for more than one shot. The magazines I have for it seem to hate feeding. I'm going to break down and buy a couple of Ruger mags again.

I dont usually use 147gr.'s in my 9mm but I am starting to like them more. Do you think they are a good round especially to mix 1 mag in their filled with 147's.

I originally picked 147gr because my home defense scenarion includes hunkering down. 147gr will go through the bedroom door and perform better because of the extra weight.

The 147gr is better at some things than others. Which things and how much better depends on the manufacturer and the particular "model" of bullet. In most cases you are looking at more penetration with slightly less expansion. Rarely though you get a bullet like the Winchester Ranger Bonded where the 147 actually has less penetration and more expansion than the 124gr+p in cloth.

All of that does not directly answer the question. Yes I believe that the modern 147gr 9mm is a perfectly fine round. From everything I have read and seen personally they work just fine. Even my own less than scientific tests showed the Ranger Bonded 147gr to perform through many types of fabric.

I feel comfortable that Federal HST, Federal Hydra Shok (LE Version), Remington Golden Saber, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Ranger Bonded or Winchester Ranger T in 147gr will penetrate and expand as intended. I have seen less than spectacular tests of the Winchester USA 147gr and some older designs. I think that the heavy 9mm round has really come in to maturity over the last decade.

Now some might be thinking, "but he just said he had a whole magazine full of Winchester USA." I do. I recently had a bad experience with Winchester Ranger Ammo that was loaded to an extreme pressure from the factory. It caused a pretty nasty malfunction that locked up the gun. I am shooting off the last of it. So, I only have 16 rounds left. That means the Winchester USA that I recieved as a birthday gift is in my spare magazine. I do not regularly carry or condone carrying Winchester USA for actual self defense.

Second disclaimer
Winchester Ranger Bonded was not the ammo that caused the malfunction. The malfunction was caused by 147gr Ranger FMJ training ammo. However, it happened repeatedly. So, I feel uncomfortable with Winchester's LE ammo as a whole. I personally know cops that have used it without issue for years. I will base my choice on personal experience though. While it works for others on a regular basis it doesn't for me and there are equally effective options available. I will choose one of those options.

I can't believe this is still going. Well, since I am just getting up and watching a little news in my bedroom while getting dressed (and drinking coffee), this is right next to me with my G17 and 2 spare mags laying in the bottom.
