Put your favorite manufacturers on a shelf. :)

Playboy,

One I would definately consider "Top Shelf" is Wilson Combat. I have had a Baer & Brown and I can tell you the Wilson line is every bit as good. I only have the Wilson left, I just liked its nuances a bit more.

Your opinion of Taurus & Kel-Tec makes me wonder when was the last time you fired either brand
Check out the "departed guns" section in my photobucket photos. You will see a few taurus items pictured. :)

As for Kel-Tecs, my misfortune with them is well documented on this very sight...along with many, many other people's problems. If you ever look at Kel-Tec threads that go one for extended periods you will often notice people defending them in the early posts only to come back months later and retract their support because their "mine works flawlessly" claims turn into "mine worked flawlessly until it just stopped working.".
One could easily get the opinion that you are one of those,
"It has to be S&W or it has to be a 1911" types.
Not if they take the time to actually pay attention to what I own and shoot they wouldn't. I own guns from Colt, S&W, Ruger, Springfield Armory, Glock, Walther, H&K, Sig, Bond Arms, Rohrbaugh, Seecamp, NAA, EMF, Kahr, Beretta, Marlin, DPMS, and Remington, and have had guns from even more manufacturers...such as Kimber, Para Ordnance and others. :)

I actually find the premise of the thread offensive and elitist and on the level of calling each others kids ugly. But if that floats your boat then far be it from me to complain.

I'll be moving on to other threads. Enjoy.

I am a bit confused. Just what exactly is "elitist" about expressing your opinions on the quality of a manufactured product based on experience and use? Is it elitist to say Yugo's were not as good a car as a Honda?

Glock on the 3rd shelf? I hope the 3rd shelf is handy then, so that when one of the top shelf guns experiences a stoppage when its needed you can grab a more reliable gun.

lol whut

um CZ's are NOT BHP clones, they make look somewhat similar outside but they utilize a completly different internal design.

Yugo, makes a good AK don't they? And the Japanese made really bad weapons before and during WWII.

I don't think Para is 2nd shelf. The quality just isn't there. I like my para but it is at least 2 steps below my DW in the quality department.

Lots of great guns and valued opinions in this post!

I remember back in the 90's when my buddy bought a "Shelf 1" high dollar 1911 and I bought my "Shelf 3" P90 for less than 1/2 the money.

After some gunsmith tweaking and a couple of "custom parts" he "got her runnin right"!

My unrefined, bulky, rattly, ugly P90  ate the center of the target right out of the box! It has never missed a beat!

After owning guns from the top 3 of the 4 shelves listed in the original post, I can tell you that the one by my bedside is a Ruger!

My best to all!

;)

Remember TFL members, PBP has a right to express his opinion. Again, it is HIS opinion and he is entitled to it. PBP thanks for the info on the RIA!!! I think that I will stick with the DW!!

FWIW, I think you are placing CZ too low on the scale from my personal experience. I'd put it in 2nd shelf.

I own one. I can tell you that it is NOT one of my CCW guns any more. Initially, I was impressed with it's abilities to digest any ammo I put through it, including my own reloads (which Glock tells you is a no no). After more than a few stove pipes in a row at the range with box ammo it became a safe queen. An entire police department in NJ had similar FTF issues with their Glocks that went unresolved until they were forced to trade them in.

Perhaps PBP was generous with his shelf placement on this one.

I do have exceptions with the ratings on the EAA line. I own a Witness Tanfoglio Silver Team that belongs a few shelves up on your rating PBP.

If S&W is the Cadillac of revolvers then why is it 2nd shelf? Who is top shelf?
Ummm...Korth, maybe? Personally, I'd consider Smiths to be top-shelf.

Owning multiple specimens of both, I'd certainly place CZ next to Sig Sauer.

Im surprised you did not include Sig Sauer (the P220, P226 and P239 to be exact) among your "top shelf" weapons. Of course, as of late, Sig has not been producing the top-tier quality weapons they are generally known for. But still.....

To me a top shelf gun is the one that goes bang when I need it to. Whether its a custom 1911 from any makern a ruger, a springield xd or a hi point. If it saves my life it is worth many millions more than I may have paid for it. Personally I would taks my xd over a true custom 1911. It is just as reliable and more accurate for me. And since it started as a hypothetical arising from a conversation over beer. I know people who would drink pabst over anything. Personally I prefer corina. its like the old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

How can guns like glocks and xd's not be topshelf? They are the most reliable semiautos made.

Are you going for elegant refinement? I can agree with some of those on your list. S&w revolvers are better than cult... I mean colt, too.

PPK, PPK/S 2nd and Kel-Tec 4th shelf---hmmmmm

rather than try to figure how these decisions were reached,
i'll just figure you did this for fun while waiting for a train that never came
