PM45 Nightmare

Update

Sorry for the delay...I do have another life outside of this forum....LOL:rolleyes:

Tried going to the range on Easter but I guess they were closed cuz they didn't answer the phone.

So I made it after work Monday.

Put 250 rounds through her and not a single stove pipe!

I was using some cheap range Winchester Ball ammo.
Had the same success w/ the CorBon JHP 185 grain +P ammo.

However...now the weapon seems to have a failure to load every so often.
Dropping the slide w/ a full mag, it sometimes skates right over the round and does not pick up a round....click no bang!
Sent it back today on Kahr's dime again...dirty as hell just the way it was.

If anyone is having great success with this weapon please share w/ me what ammo it loves!
The +P ammo seems to be what it likes best as it really moves the action and shoots much truer/accurate.
I'm sure they will get it right this time. I really love the gun and it is an awesome CC weapon. I was able to manually load it upon a failure to load w/ no issues.

No more hollow point crushing and no more stove pipes.

I had a air marshall in the next lane and let him give it a try and he was very impressed as I was w/ his marksmanship! This guy was amazing w/ his Sig 226 .40. He let me shoot it. It was a dream to shoot and I shot it almost as good as he did. It was obvious he had a lil' work done on it.

Man I really hate giving bad news since I am in love w/ this weapon but...I must share the truth!
I did have several jams too.
It's the smallest CC .45 I could find and so far have only carried it w/ a pocket holster and I almost forgot I had it on me a few times over the weekend.

If worse comes to worse I will probally get some work done on it by a good gunsmith...after shooting the marshall's weapon it was obvious how a lil' work can make a good weapon a great weapon.

I plan on putting some +P ammo through it when I get it back and I am also going to get a "Thunder Belt" so I can carry it no matter what I'm wearing.

Just an FYI... I am Irish and seem to have the luck of the Irish!

Nothing ever seems to work right off the bat for me and very often requires a lil finesse...LOL!
:D
With that said I'll update y'all when I get 'er back. I sent it in today so I probably won't see 'er till Monday or Tuesday...hey Tuesday's Ladies night at the range maybe there will be something besides a target to set my sights on...lol j/k (Wife would shoot me....literally!!!)

Unpleasant to shoot

So sorry wasn't trying to back anyboday up...
I can see what y'all are talking about with the thumb knuckle.
Mine was bleeding after 250 rounds but I am pretty immune to pain.
After football, wrestling, bar brawls, car accidents, mutiple broken bones, back surgery, and decades of manual labor...I didn't even notice until I was done w/ the last box.
I agree w/ Ben about the backstrap...I think it's what allows you to hold on to the lil' sucker!
I got some great advice from the marshall as far as stance and grip.

I think unconsciously we tend to hold this lil' sucker too tight.

The marshall showed me a very cool way to hold a pistol (I'm a pretty damn good shot btw).
He showed me that your trigger hand (the one we're feeding to the lil .45) should be relaxed and your other hand should be gripping that hand keeping both thumbs against the gun and as high as possible on the frame. Keep both arms fully extended and locked but not to the point where they will fatigue and start to shake. Lastly "press' the trigger do not "pull" the trigger.
Put these all together and you are able to repeat your shot over and over and aquire the target rapidly and control the flip. You can use your thumb(s) to keep from pulling to left or right when pulling the trigger.
When I started practicing this (half a box of ammo left) I realized that the "point" was no longer banging my thumb knuckle.
Here's a link to an awesome video I had seen before meeting this guy which basically reiterates what he was teaching me.

Good post

That is a different way then I was taught. I always use the Weaver and was taught that the triangle made you a bigger target. I practiced holding the gun the way it suggested in the video. It seems much easier to align although it feels a little awkward.

I look forward to trying it at my next range session.

Dan...

Wish I'd read this before 7:00. I already went to the range. I bookmarked that video though. What an awesome shot. I may go again tomorrow though just to try it out. Those crisp triggers on those little single action 1911's are probably pretty easy to squeeze vs a traditional DA trigger though. I wonder if he could do that with a DA or DAO?

Very good post,
Ben

Sorry, lost track. .45fan did you say how many break in rounds are through the PM45? My Kimber and P45 all need about 500 to start perking along...

I watched that video and thats exactly how my thumb and finger placement is regardless of caliber.I guess thats why I didn't experience thumb bite.

IMO that video is a great demo of posture, I see people at the range with off hand stance like there shooting riffles or hunched back.

Kahr called today

Well thanks agian to Ben!!!!!!!!
Bob called me today and was about to replace the gun. He felt that the tolerances may have been exceeded though he was unsuccessful at duplicating my problem and said he even shot it himself.

He did say environmental conditions may be a factor and did not even suggest that there was NOT something wrong w/ the weapon even though he could not duplicate my failure to load problem.

He said he was going to give it to their gunsmith and that the gunsmith would call me shortly.

Well it couldn't have been 30 minutes when Jason their gunsmith called. (great guy and very fun to talk to!)

Jason said he felt he could fix the problem by doing some work on the "extractor" I think he said....(it was a very busy day at work and I did not get the exact detail.....sorry).
I told him I would prefer it if he could fix it as opposed to replacing it since Kahr had polished the feed ramp and I had already put 500 rounds through her already. Besides it was my weapon now!

What they did so far is as follows...
1-Replaced recoil spring assembly
2-Replaced magazine catch
3-Polished feed ramp and extractor
4- Lubed magazines

I should get her back next week and I'll be off to the range again!

Hey man I'm almost outa ammo anyone know of a good site to buy some Gold Dot Personal Protection - 45 Auto +P???
I thought I'd give them a shot!
The PM45 does seem to like the Cor-Bon 185 gr +P ammo.
I ordered it from http://dakotaammo.net but I'd like to try something new(paid $28.07 for a box of 20).
http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/index.html is out of stock on everything .45
Any suggestions???
I live in South Florida so a local store would be awesome too.
Thanks guys!

Ammo

I ordered from Bass Pro...

Remington® Premier Golden Saber™ Centerfire Handgun Ammunition - 45 Auto+P - 185
and..
Hornady® Custom™ Pistol Ammo - 45 ACP+P 200 Grain JHP/XTP - 20 Rounds

I'll give these a shot...they're on b/o so who knows when I'll get 'em.

That Hornady load is awesome. Shoots very well in my guns, too.

Just go to photobucket and open a free account. Then use the IMG Link posted next to what ever imige you post on photobucket. That image link will provide an automatic picture where ever you insert it. That's what I use to post all of my pictures. It's a reliable site, so the pics will always show and quickly too. Looks like Lance uses them too when you right click it and go to properties.

Many folks don't realize that the Hornady Custom loads are virtually identical to their premium TAP tactical loads designed for law enforcement. They use the exact same bullets, and exact same powder load, and thus give identical performance.

The only difference is that the Hornady TAP loads use a more expensive nickel plated case, and are supposed to have better sealing around the primer.

But I have generally found that one can buy the Hornady Custom for quite a bit less money than TAP. So if you can find a better deal on the Custom ammo, it is definitely the better value.

I think that there is nothing more frightening than staring down the bore of a .45:

Thanks again!
At this point I'm just happy to find AMMO!!!
I'd like to try the Speer too but could not find anyone w/ them in stock or a website that would allow you to order it since they were outa stock.:(

Got her back Monday went to the range today

Got her back Monday went to the range today...

So I put 120 rounds of JHP through her. 60 Magtech and 60 Cor-Bon +P's w' no problems...she's fixed!

Had a failure to load (actually to go into battery...action stayed back) 3 times but I think it was my fault...(Grip)

I used some cotton wadding when I got home and really polished the barrel...looks like chrome now!

Need more ammo to really put her through her paces though!

I only have a few clips left for my XD and the PM45.

The ammo I ordered via Bass Pro is back ordered!
Anyone know where I can order some Speer Gold Dot +P?

Cheers!
