Given only one pistol it would have to be a rugged, 9mm Luger just because it would be easy to find ammo under difficult conditions.

Although a supressed 22LR might be the better choice with a stash of ammo and the mental discipline to use the 22 to get a rifle ;)

Lifetime Cartridge

.357 or .44 magnum. You can load them up or down, use birdshot, shoot long range...lots of advantages. Don't have to be concerned about whether the ammo will operate the gun.

I'd pick a revolver cartridge, and a revolver. Probably a .357 magnum, perhaps a .44 magnum.

If I had to pick a pistol cartridge, I'd pick .45 ACP. Although, it isn't very versatile. 10mm is probably tops for that.

I voted .45acp, but if was chambered by all the big manufacturers and ammo availability was not an issue it would have been 10mm.

Oh, and my grandfather felt quite comfortable with a .45acp as his backup pistol when he hunted bear. He had witnessed several bears taken with .45 in his lifetime. Although I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with a .45 against a bear, he never lied to me and I'd take my chances. I guess if push comes to shove, any caliber and a good pair of running legs is all that you need!;)
