Like others have said "9mm" because of price, availability and I like it. I would hate to limit myself to just one but that would be it.

If money were not a factor, I would choose 10mm. But since it is, and I do not yet handload, I had to choose .45 ACP. Still gets the job done.

.357 Mag would be my first choice in cartridge (because I can use it in both my lever action rifles and the revolvers. ) However, since only autos are listed, I'd take the .45 ACP because of versatility and varity of cartridges available.

:D ;) :p   :)

Based on the selections provided, I would pick a 10mm based on its effectiveness on both 2 legged and 4 legged vermin. It is a VERY versatile round.

Of the choices indicated, my vote went for the 10 mm. I'd prefer the .45 Auto for self defense and a .44 Mag for hunting, but the 10 mm will do both just fine. 135 grains in the 10 mm would provide one shot stops like the 125 grain .357 mag. A 180 or 200 grain load would do for hunting quite well. Very versitile cartridge. I have a Delta Gold Cup and it is on my hip as a back up when hunting with a rifle. Much better than the .45 Auto for that purpose, I think.

Gonna have to be stubborn and say .44 mag.

Desert Eagle, Grizzly, whatever the semi-auto platform may be, the .44 mag is still the most versatile/capable round out there though the guns that fire it are overlarge...

.44 Magnum Revolver.

Shoot as mild as 130 Grains at 500 FPS to 320 Grains at 1300 FPS.

:D

Beats a 10 MM eh?

:D :D

45 ACP... Pretty much all I shoot now except of the 22LR.

If I shot more or had a bit less disposable income, I'd gladly be able to stick with the 9x19.

22LR, since I have found it to be available to civilians in just about every country I have ever visited unlike some of the calibers that are currently being polled on this thread.

As much as I prefer the .45 ACP, if limited to one caliber for the rest of my life it would be the 9mm.

Why?

The 9mm is easier (and less expensive) to get worldwide.

Our own military, as well as the NATO countries use it, insuring a steady flow of cheap, surplus ammo well into the future.

In the same weight / size envelope, you can fit many more 9mm rounds.
