One handgun only...what would it be?

Depends.... if its the end of the world and you have to have only one its a no brainer. A .22 take your pick as long as its an SR22P.

Too hard of a question. But I'm with ngzcaz - for general utility it would have to be my 317-3 kit gun. Wouldn't work on black bear though :(

The highest capacity 9mm revolver there is. Hopefully something in the 8 round area.

Im more of a .40 automatic guy, but 9mm is plentiful and revolvers work

one handgun only

That's a tuff one. Double-action .38 spl., made by Ruger or S + W. I quess a .357 would fill the same bill with dual caliber capacity

A quality 357magnum revolver, 3" or less barrel, - reliable, w/ the 38special option ammo's reasonably cheap and easy to find and will probably last my lifetime with reasonable care. Can be CC as well as used at home. S&W 686P would be nice or a Ruger SP101 or GP100 3". They'd all do nicely.

I like my 1911 best but in your scenario I would have to choose my Hi-Cap 92--Not to start a caliber war (plz I beg not :() with the advancements in ammo technology now I feel entirely secure in my 9mm's defensive capability. Several 17 round mags and I am good to go.

-Cheers

Revolver - S&W 686

Semi-auto - Either a Walther P99 AS or a Bersa Thunder UC9 Pro. (Yes, I stated a Bersa. It's a damn fine weapon and I shoot it very well as do I the P99 AS. The edge I give the 9UC is conceal-ability.)

The 686 would probably be the one though due to it's versatility.

If there can be "only one"...

My first question is "Why" are we only allowed one handgun? If it was because of a gun grab, I would keep my Springfield XD .45, and bury everything else in the backyard and claim my other guns were carried off by gypsies.

My p229....except in 9mm instead of 40.

So I suppose I need a 9mm barrel and mags. I'm already leaning toward buying the 22 upper.

All-purpose? Of the guns I have?

a 9mm handgun, with standard [13-17 round] capacity. Since carry was listed, probably a Browning Hi Power, as it would carry nicer than my full-sized Baby Eagle, which can hold 4 more rounds, due to the frame weight.

I like the idea of a Glock G17, as I can throw a .22lr conversion on it, but I just can't cozy up to Glock pistols. Nothing wrong with them. They just don't fit my hand right.

I also would be tempted to get a full-sized 1911 and run a .22lr conversion kit on it.

However, you mentioned one gun only and I am trying to avoid giving myself multiple calibers, as that seems to be cheating.

9mm is cheap for frequent range fun, it can be effective if I use the right round and aim well, and the ammo is EVERYWHERE [like .45acp?].

I can't get 100 rounds of any other major caliber for $20, but I can for the 9mm.

So I am leaning to Browning Hi Power.
