Not an AR fan

how the hell are you not a fan of the AR?

There's no other rifle better for the price than an ar15. No other 223 that exists out there is better than an ar15.

It's the perfect rifle. It has good operational controls. It has a stock which is in line with a railed receiver, which makes optic mounting a breeze and doesn't need a cheek pad. Good market support if parts break. So many different kinds of them, always evolving, etc....

I just can't see how there's anything in the US market, or even the world, that can meet or exceed the ar15's design capabilities and versatility.

I'm not a fan of the AR either,or any semi auto rifle. The AR to me resembles a child's Mattel toy gun,I prefer wood stock and blue steel,I currently own 17 rifles, all of which are bolt action, wood stocks, and blued steel.

sorta like....

That's the first AR I've seen that looks good. That being said, I'm more of a lever-action guy.

I have a problem with the ergonomics. I like controls on the right side, and close to the trigger. I Dislike the AR safety, charging handle position and bolt release.

I prefer pulling the charging handle everytime and a reciprocating handle is much better because of its simplicity. With the bolt release position I have to readjust my aim everytime I change a magazine. With the AK or G3 I can change a magazine without my supporting hand leaving the fore end.

The fact the gun looks like a mall ninja gun in even the most basic configurations makes it ugly and repulsive, who wants to be associated with those bozos?

 I didn't buy an AR to associate with any mall ninja, SPEC OPS soldier, SEALTeam 6 member or Marine. I don't play Army with my firearms even though I own four ex-military firearms.

I bought an AR 15 because it's a simple, robust, effective design, easy to operate, shoot, diagnose for issues, repair, change caliber, find ammo for, and lightweight. It's also fun to shoot, as it turns out, and accurate, which to me is a major consideration, because with my pastimes, if they ain't fun, I ain't doing 'em any more. Bought a Colt because every Colt I have bought has been a winner. That's my preferences, and none of them were made to act like anyone but me. When I go the range, it's a tough choice- AR15, M1 rifle, or M1A1 carbine. They are all a lot of fun

You are free to dislike the AR platform; that's up to you and I support your ability to like anything you want. But you don't need to paint AR owners with the brush you're wielding to make your point.

There's a special place in my heart for AR 15s and 10s. Sure i get more thrill out of shooting my Bolt gun. (Something about hearing that fling of brass after each carefully placed shot gets my blood going) But for putting a decent amount of rounds downrange an AR is just plane fun. As Art said it makes one hell of a truck gun and with a collapsible stock my 18" upper is shorter than my youth model .243 by 3-4" which is great.

I have some downsides though. IMO my BCM MK12 mod 1 requires so much more technique and concentration from me, to shoot accurately than my bolt rifle. Trigger pull, cheek weld, breathing, and steadiness have to be perfect for me to turn out good groups with it. Sure all of that has to be done with my bolt rifle but it's much easier to manage. Alot of the trouble is if you intend to have a med. range accurate AR on a collapsible stock they tend to be pointed at the end and harder to steady. Or that has been my case so far. As mentioned earlier cleaning is sometimes a PITA as they do foul pretty bad.

Question- does that hat in your photo have a logo for the EARS system on the side?

OP here,

I looked up the Bushmaster varminter today, and if I were to do some varmint elimination and coyote hunting, I could see myself getting that one. With those after market wood stocks, of course. ;)

Hmm and thats your choice. I do respect the gun, as in I wouldn't want to be downrange. I have had a bad experience with them though. My friend, a former AR owner had an M4 style AR, and it was rubbish. I forget the manufacturer of the lower but the upper was a Colt. Controls aside, the gun hated both steel HK mags and PMags, it would only operate with the 30 round colt brand magazine he got with it, which suffered follower tilt, and we had to clean the feedlips constantly, due to soot from firing (we were using 5.56 from Germany, and it was pretty clean running ammo in the Mini 14 we had with us). The worst was yet to come, though. The gun was pretty hot when we took a break. We noticed the lubricant we had used had burned off and an acrid smell filled the air. We relubed it after it cooled.

Then, while I was taking a turn on it, it jammed. I punched the FA, as another at the range suggested. It fired, and sheared the extractor, ejector and blew the magazine out of the rifle. We took it apart and looking at the cam surface and the magazine inserted, the bolt was binding due to fouling (from like 300 rounds) on the cam track, even though it was well lubed and the magazine did not help either. He returned the rifle to his LGS for a refund, got it and bought a Bulgarian 74 which hits 1.5MOA regularly, and a mini-14 like I had brought from my bros.

After that scare I'll stick with AKs

RedDaemonFox, I've driven a pickup truck with a bad front suspension. It didn't convince me that pickup trucks are bad vehicles

Calling the AR the perfect rifle is like calling obama the perfect president, not even close. There are way better .223's out there than the AR. Part of the reason people dont like them is fanboys who think the AR is the be all end all in guns. Wrong.

The very first centerfire rifle I ever fired was an M16A1, at the small arms firing school at Camp Perry.
I never forgot how much fun it was too shoot. The fact that I outshot a big talker next to me in line was even better.
I owned a Bushmaster HBAR A2 rifle, but it was never very accurate for me...and it was too heavy.
two years ago, GI surplus M16A1 barreled uppers were around cheap...with the fond memory of Camp Perry, I bought one and put together my own M16A1 clone.
What a great rifle...light weight, accurate...and it has been 100% reliable from the first shot. I use GI surplus Colt 20rd mags. I enjoy shooting clay pigeons at 100yds, which are pretty much one shot, one pigeon, with the A1.
Nothing mall ninja about it...in fact, it is practically anti mall ninja.
Just a light, accurate, reliable rifle.

I might as well throw in my $0.02 I love my AR15 and plan to buy another and a AR10 very soon. You know what I like most about my AR15 is when people ask me "why do you need a gun like that" My answer "how the hell else am I going to send 30+ rounds down range in a matter of seconds".........

Just looked at it and didn't see one. It's just a plane jane BCM hat that comes with the uppers.

Chris,

There is a difference, had my hand been on the magazine, it would have screwed it up pretty badly.

Considering the magazines are rubbish, I can't ever say I will feel safe using one again. There is just no need for it in my collection, especially with corners that have been cut in making it.
