No way the mighty 30-06 can be beat?

No way the mighty 30-06 can be beat by that upstart .308
And thousands of competitive shooters know otherwise from an accuracy perspective.

And a .308 with five more inches of barrel length will a bit more than make up for the 100 fps muzzle velocity advantage the 30-06 would otherwise have.

Doesn't matter to me what those shooters chose, to me the 30-06 Springfield will always be my favorite between those two hands down.

I agree with hooligan

It makes no sense for anyone to make comparisons and give their choice an advantage, if your going to compare a .308 to a 30/06 both rifles should have the same length barrel, I'm sick and tired of reading give the .308 an advantage by lengthen their barrel 2" or 4" etc etc!! I've used the 30/06 for fifty two years and I still love the the caliber, the first time I handled a center fire rifle I had been inducted into the U.S. Army and it was an M1 Garand, yes I do have one!! Pretty petty comment Bart!! William

Hey, I like them both. I don't own a .30-06 but if the chance came about I grab it.

The .308 on the other hand was a cartridge I hated. Till I got one and saw first hand how good it is.

Doesn't the case capacity of the 30-06 provide room for the handloader to max out the load to something A LOT better than the smaller .308 case will allow?

I haven't done it, but I've had friends who claimed that there was simply more EXCESS room available in the '06 case to exploit.

If so, and if both are handloaded, the old '06 should have some significant power advantages over the .308.

Granted, the .308 is an inherently more accurate cartridge......perhaps because of this same powder capacity issue mentioned.

I was going to comment earlier but then decided not to thinking this thread would die.

Since it didn't I'll pose the question: what happened to the bigger, better, faster stonger mindset we used to have?

Who wants to buy a car or truck that can do 90% of what last years model did? How about a house with 10-15% less living space than you currently have?

This also applies to why we accept the 40 in lieu of the 10mm.

The 308 might make sense from a combat rifle standpoint but for all other applications... why? Why are trying to shorter distances with less power?

The length/width ratio of the .308 is said to give more uniform burning than that of the '06 and thus is more consistent, shot to shot. Ergo, a bit better for group size.

To stay within bounds of the maximum cartridge length of the .308, bullets longer than 165-grain intrude into the "powder room". The '06 thus has an advantage in velocity for bullets of 180-grains and more.

Art pretty much covered it. I load both .308 and 30-06 and use the same bullet that I cast and out to a certain distance ther isnt much difference but once you get past that distance I use my 30-06 and just deal with the trajectory.

Gunwriters with nothing else to do can contrive any situation just to earn a paycheck.

I hunt with other calibers, but the .30-06 is the undisputed king of American calibers. It works on animals, people and targets accurately and effectively. It's affordable. It has earned it's place in two wars and countless deer camps.

Seems to me the performance of the two is so close as to not be worth a whole lot of bother. I would choose a 308 if I wanted a slightly more compact platform. A short action rifle with a carbine length barrel begs to be in 308.
