Nightstand/ range gun/ occasional carry: help me pick between 5 guns

Those are all fairly large, thick guns, which makes CCW more difficult. The Beretta 92FS is probably going to be the hardest to conceal. I would say the SP2022 is probably the easiest, or possibly the S&P M&P, but it's a wash, really.

The more i research, the more bad things I hear about M&P
Take it all with a grain of salt. M&Ps are fine, but not everyone likes their ergonomics (including myself). They shoot just fine, though - you really have to handle it yourself to see if they're right for you. No two people will like the same things - and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't especially like the M&P platform.

As others already recommended, you've got to feel them all. I know the VP9 and its SA/DA hammer-fired cousin, the P30, are epic wins in the ergonomics department. The P30 is more expensive but there's a $200 rebate promotion going until the end of the year.

For me, of those, the Sig. I prefer 9mm to .45 so that brings it down to 4 and over here S&W's M&P line is not sold, so I can't include that one.

Of the last 3, the Sig is the only I've held and found it very comfortable. Another major and unavoidable factor is cost for me. The Sig is by far the best bang for the money and seems to be small enough to make a decent carry gun.

Any gun can be a range gun and indeed you should practice with what you carry and when you're talking 15+ rds per mag and a decent grip size, there is no reason why it can't make a good bedside gun, IMHO.

Had I carried my G19, I would have replaced it with a CZ 75 Compact (as it happens I replaced it with an SP-01) and either of those would work as a bedside gun, therefore again so should the affordable Sp2022.

My point is, I'd feel good about a compact for bedside duty if I shot it well, and the same goes (has to go) for a carry gun. IMO, although great for range and home, a full-size is not so much better that it makes it worth having to work around its size for carry. Make sense?

If you pick a good point to mount a home defence, the marginally shorter sight radius should not be an insurmountable problem.

Of those, I'd definitely go for the Ruger 1911, but that's because a 1911 fits my hand like no other gun. Of those, even if it didn't, the Ruger would likely be my choice. Simply go for the Commander version for a bit smaller.

I probably would but I'm pretty sure you cannot buy a brand new Glock in MA

I live in MA, and you can. They are on the approved roster list, but the AG deemed the LCI (loaded chamber indicator) not sufficient and said any shops that sell them will be subjected to a fine. The LCI on Glock's are the same as many other guns you can buy in MA such as Beretta's and Sig's, which is a bit of paint on the extractor that shows when a round is chambered. Many shops ignore the warning and sell them anyway as they know their rights and that the AG is just overstepping it's boundaries. Just need to find the right shop who will sell you new Gen 4 Glock's.

Something for nightstand, carry, and range? Glock 19, maybe an M&P compact. If you plan on carrying frequently none of the guns you listed are great for that, perhaps the 1911 as it's the thinnest but still a large gun.

Rented a few guns today.

Ruger SR9: good trigger, decent sights, pretty bad ergonomics. Felt like I was holding a block of wood.
M&P: Very comfortable. Very soft recoil. Had a trigger job so I can't comment on that.
SP2022: was ok at everything but just didn't quite strike me in any way.
SP226: Just a more solid feeling SP2022 with slightly more comfortable grip.
H&K P30: Very nice gun. Extremely comfortable and accurate with very smooth trigger. Awesome slide release too.

I'm gonna wait for VP9 and see if I like it better than M&P

I did seem to like striker fired pistols better by the way.

Lots of us have chosen a 1911 for the tasks that you have identified. The Ruger is a good one. I use mine for USPSA and concealed carry. Totally trustworthy and thin although a bit heavy. Good for whacking a surly bartender.

1911 is my choice, but PLEASE check out the reviews on the new Remington 1911R1, and get your hands on one and check it out. I was looking at the Ruger 1911 at first, because I've always been a Ruger fan. Something about that Remington hit me just right, and I soon discounted the Ruger. I've heard that if for some unforeseen reason you inadvertently drop the mag from the gun, you cannot light up the one in the chamber. That probably wouldn't happen, but it would be an unwelcome surprise if that happened when you needed it most. The new Remington has three-dot sights, and are now machined. My last new high-end Colt 1911 from the custom shop was a huge disappointment and unreliable. Big money doesn't always equate to a great product.;)

I have several pistols and several 9mms (which seems to be your list) and am a Sig fan and now have a p228 (w germany), p938 (edc), and my nightstand pistol is a 2022 you are looking at.

I have shot several other makes and models (and own several) and nothing stands up to Sig in terms of just always going "bang" imho. You can put crappy ammo (wolf) in it or shoot it limp wristin' all you want and it just always seems to cycle without hitch.

Pros
- very cost effective imho best value for the $$ type gun
- Reliable Sig makes great 9mms..
- Rail is nice (nice to have a laser/Flashlight on it when in nightstand)
- Double Action on first shot and SA on other
- Exposed hammer / decocker ( personal preference )
- Good Capacity

Cons
- Feels very plastic compared to p228 and my 1911s
- Decocker and other components are more rigid than smooth in comparison
- Trigger is so/so

Hope this helps..
