Nightstand/ range gun/ occasional carry: help me pick between 5 guns

I would pick the SP2022 if it had to do all those things out of the choices you listed. I also factored my personal price range in though. Hard to go wrong with Sig.

That said, I strongly considered an SP2022 and picked a Glock 19 instead to do all those same functions. But that is because I shot it better.

Well I've owned a couple Berettas, didn't care much for them., too big & bulky for what they are. I have several 1911s, & could be well satisfied with a 4" for your scenario. I own a SigPro SP2022 in 40 cal, it would work, too. Don't have any experience with the HK. But for your hypothetical, if you'd let me choose either a 40 S&W, or 45 ACP M&P, that would be my choice. The three M&Ps I own may not be the best in any one area, but they will do anything I need a handgun to do.

No Glock 19? As its hard to pick one gun to fill all those roles, the G19 comes closer than anything else I can think of.

Yeah, Glocks don't do a whole lot for me personally, but it's pretty hard to argue against the G19 if you're limited to one gun for all purposes.

There is an additional MA Attorney General list. Basically, just because the gun is approved by MA Public Safety doesn't mean that it will be approved by AG. AG was already sued for this nonsense without much success.

I'm going to echo what others have stated:

1. For an all-around gun, get a compact (under 4" barrel) instead of a full-size - that eliminates the 1911, and means you should look at the 92 Compact and M&P 9C.
2. Next, handle each gun at a shop to eliminate any that just don't fit your hands. In my particular case, the Beretta just feels awkward in my hand (which is a shame, because it's a gorgeous gun...). You're not making a decision yet, just eliminating an obviously bad choice - even if you can shoot it accurately, you don't want a gun that's not comfortable to hold, let alone shoot. Keep in mind that a key advantage to the S&W and the HK have replaceable backstraps for different sized hands.
3. Then, decide on a striker-fired (VP9, M&P) or hammer-fired DA/SA (2022, 92 Compact). This is mostly a personal choice - do you want a consistent light trigger pull, or do you feel more comfortable with a heavier DA pull on the first round. I prefer DA/SA, but it take a lot more practice to get used to.
4. The last step is shooting them at the range, to see which ones are really more comfortable to you.

Finally, I know you've already narrowed it down, but if you're only going to be in MA temporarily, consider getting a .357 revolver. You'll be making fewer compromises between models like with the semi-autos, and you'll probably hold on to it forever.

I would go with a M&P compact, great do everything gun, CC and nightstand. For a dedicated nightstand gun I would go with the 1911 or the Berretta 92. Just my opinion and if it were my money.

Smith & Wesson Model 36 3".

What?

It's not on the list?

Well it should be.

Pick the one that you handle and shoot the best.

You can pick the greatest gun ever designed, but if, to you, it feels and handles as if it were a bunch of cinderblocks wrapped in barbed wire, broken glass, and dog poo, it's not going to be doing you much good at all.

1. Ruger SR1911
2. H&K VP9
3. S&W M&P 9mm
4. Beretta 92FS
5. SIG SP 2022

Honestly, I probably wouldn't buy any of these.

My thoughts:
1: I love 1911's. I would even consider the Ruger, but I have SA's on the low end and DW's on the high end. I probably won't buy another low end 1911. Just too much hassle sometimes.

2: H&K VP9... H&K doesn't make a bad gun. I haven't shot this one, so it is hard to be real clear.

3: I've shot several of these. They are the worst of the big 3 striker fired guns. My money would go to XD and maybe Glock. I prefer XD. It is all about the trigger and the M&P trigger is bad. The FN FNS is another good one!

4. & 5: no interest in a DA!

Out of your list, the VP9. But if you want a gun that will feel like it was molded around your hand, try the CZ75 P-01 or PCR.

Small enough to carry.
14+1
Great range gun
Reliable
Put night sights on it and it will make a great home defense gun too.

For an all-around gun that fills all those roles, I will second the idea of a compact version of a full-sized service handgun.

One I think would be very good and almost ideal would be the Springfield XDm compact....small enough to carry, good trigger, reasonably light, fairly good ergonomics, grip safety, and can use full-sized magazines with grip extensions, essentially making it a full-sized grip with full-sized capacity. So for carry, use the compact magazine with a larger magazine for your reload, and for nightstand or range duty, you can just use the larger magazines.

Of course, it's a little pricey, and if the XD isn't allowed in your state (really? where's the logic in that?), doesn't do you any good. Other choices in that same category are the Glock 19, Sig 229, HK USP compact, Witness compact...and lots of others, even a compact version of that Beretta or the S&W M&P.

Of all the guns on your list, the only one I have extensive experience with (or have even fired) is the Beretta...and I'd take any of the others over the Beretta. But if it fits your hand, and you don't mind its trigger, or the unreachable decocker/safety that tends to flip back and forth while carried, the Beretta is an adequate gun, and should be reliable.

The .357 magnum revolver is another good choice, as someone mentioned, and I think even MA would allow it

Definitely see how each gun feels in your hand, and try out the trigger a few times. If possible try shooting each gun before you decide

You really need to shoot them, and see what operating system you want. DA/SA hammer fired, vs striker fired, etc. Very different guns, but of that list I like the 92FS, and VP9. I would also add a few from CZ, like the 75B, 75D PCR (best all around 9MM they make), SP-01, and if you want polymer P-07, or P-09.
