Need some advice with a 22lr semi auto pistol

Well then I guess Taurus should get some well deserved praise for the PT-22/22Poly pistols that are a copy of the Beretta. I, as well as others I know, and more I've read about have had great performance from their little Bull mouse guns.

I am by no means a Taurus fan. I had issues with a terribly machined Taurus 94 that came straight out of the box that way. That was a Taurus Brazil product. The POLY 22 is a Taurus USA product. That said, my POLY 22 has been an excellent little pistol. It is NOT a copy of the Beretta. It is similar in that it is a Tip-up, but thats where the similarities end. The Taurus is DAO, the Beretta is DA/SA. The Beretta holds 7 in the magazine, the Taurus holds 8. The Taurus has a standard location magazine release, the Beretta release is on the heel of the grip. The Taurus has a magazine disconnect, and an internal safety lock. The Beretta has neither. Similar in operation, but NOT a copy.

My Taurus has functioned very well. it has never failed to feed a round. It has functioned much better than the more expensive Beretta.

A comment to Tynman about these Tip-up pistols. The Tip-up design has an advantage in loading, checking the chamber, and in cleaning, but because of the design, these pistol dont have an extractor. IF you were thinking of using a Tip-up for Self Defense, one of the centerfire Tip-ups would be a better choice.(25acp or 32acp. The centerfire rounds are much more reliable than rimfire rounds) The problem is, if you have a dud round, and rack the slide to extract and load another round, because there is no extractor, you will simply shove another round into the un-extracted round in the chamber. You instead need to tip the barrel, and remove the defective round. If the chamber is squeeky clean, many time simply flipping the barrel open will fling the dud round out, but thats not something to rely on. If your new pistol is simply going to be a toy/plinker, then the 22 is fine, but if you think you might carry it for Self Defense, then consider one of the centerfire pistols instead. You could do what aarondhgraham has done, and buy one of each. Play/plink with the 22, and carry the .25 or .32

EDIT: I just remembered that Tynman is in Jersey, so carry probably isnt an option...

Yes the tomcat is a .32 auto and Im looking for 22lr.

When I move out of NJ I will carry but I wont carry anything smaller them my .380. That is the reason I got it. The 22lr pistol is just for fun and training my kids once they get to that stage. But fun is the main reason. I do like that tip up barrel.

.22 LR pocket pistol

The most reliable and best .22 LR semi -auto pistol of what I think of small in size was my Beretta model 87 Cheetah . I sold it for nearly double the price I paid for it.....nice pistol but not my cup of tea ! I still own its big brother...the Model 87 Target Pistol and will never sell that one ! I don't think the cheetah is offered anymore but could be wrong....used ones can be found !

I guess I am confused. You started this thread stating you wanted a pocket sized 22. Now you say you won't carry anything smaller than a 380 and that's probably a wise choice.

But you want a 22 for training your kids and just for fun then some of the larger guns like the Ruger 22 autos that were posted are a much better choice. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to make consistant hits. And a tiny pistol is hard to shoot. Especially for new shooters.

Well I finally settled on a sig P938 22lr. Its a little bigger then I was looking for or some that have been mentioned on here but I like it. Now I just hope she eats and shoots well.
