Need a good Home Defense gun!

Use safety locks or tip up barrels or whatever you have to do, but the best safety measure ever devised for kids is to teach them from the earliest age that when mommy (or daddy) says "no", mommy (or daddy) isn't kidding.

It would be a miracle if you did not put a slug into another room. A shotgun, even a twelve gauge, is not going to do that. It also has the ability to clear a room without going thru anything.

It even has sound effects. How would you react to the sound of a slide racking a shell into the chamber? You can add lighting, too. A high intensity strobe light can paralize some people. And, unlike a solid beam of light that can outline you and invite a BG to "shoot here" it gives you another line of safety and defense.

You can also hang a disco ball off the end  You really can't be seriously contending that a load of buckshot won't go through an interior wall. I'm not even going to go into the "sound effects" comment.

Tackdriver: good post. Not sure where Squibb was coming from on that one. :)

My .12 gauge will MOST DEFINITELY clear sheetrock, I've tested it out. Not in my house but on sheetrock. Also, a great majority of people who use a shotgun for HD don't use birdshot, it is #4, 00 or slugs and all of those will penetrate as much as a handgun round will through sheetrock. Unless you use a wimpy .32 like I carry at times. :)

Now if you live in a cinder block house like I used to in El Salvador then all bets are off. :D But, most homes stateside have interior walls of sheetrock so the point is moot.

I have a ring tone of a 12 gauge on my iPhone so when the bad guys come I simply play that and they generally run away. :p

The colt 38 you already own will work fine. Pull the trigger and it goes "BANG" . Every time. No slides, mags, safeties etc for here to fumble and make the gun useless. A revolver is also more forgiving of various ammo loads. Start her with light stuff and work her up to +P.
What you need is a quick access safe to keep the revolver in. Bolt it to the floor, closet wall etc and it keeps your gun safe from little hands (or a thief), yet will give you/her 3 second access to the gun , speed loaders and a fresh flashlight.

A 410 or 20 ga shotgun with #6 or 4's would be second choice over a revolver IMHO. You'd still need to lock it up though.

I am a revolver man so i will suggest the Ruger SP101 in the 357 mag. She can use the 38 spl in it and as she becomes more comfortable she can use the 357. It is small enough to be a great carry gun but still have that solid feel. Very comfortable to handle and with the 3" barrel very effective but still very carriable and perfect for home defense. I will say this as others here have as well. If you are going to keep your gun unloaded or locked up then what good is it, don't even bother with a gun. Get a louisville slugger or something unless you tell the assailants to "wait a moment while i load or unlock my weapon". By then you will already be dead. As far as the kids go, PUT IT UP and educate. Either way an unloaded home defense weapon is nothing more than something to throw at the attacker while he is throwing bullets at you. Our children should not be taught to fear weapons but to highly respect them for what they are. At some point you are going to turn them loose on the open highways of today in a car which some would argue is much more dangerous than a gun will ever be. God forbid any of our guns have to be used in home defense but the highway is an everyday occurance. Im just sayin. Good Luck. :)
