National ID Card

Curious what your thoughts are about the bill passed by the Senate on May 10, 2005 creating a national ID card that is to be implemented by 2007.

One more step on the way to a totally regulated society.

When my license expires this time I won't be renewing. Same for my CCW. Same for registering my premises under NAIS. One has to draw the line somewhere. If enough would draw it in the same place we could stop this. Sadly, it'll be much easier for most to just call me a nut...

It's another example of the Republican led Congress taking proactive steps to protect us from terrorism. Remember, the Republicans support everthing that is American and we can't be free if we're living in fear of terrorists. I'm sure no terrorist will get one of these ID cards.

Oh my goodness... terrorist animals? Sometimes legislation has a good intent but the little tyrantcrats at the federal level get too carried away.

Because of this, I don't know if I'll ever get a driver's license (if I couldn't purchase guns without one, then I'd just give my mom the gift of cash and have he give me the gift of a gun, since it's legal for people to purchase guns as gifts for immediate family members). I love Republicans and Democrats, don't you?

I dunno, I'm kind of torn on this. I don't have any desire for more regimentation and "your papers please" than any one else. On the other hand, it would be nice to be able to know if someone was here legitimately or not. With travel as easy as it is you can hardly assume that everyone you see is a citizen.

On the third hand, , like these documents won't be forged.....

One more link in the chains that bind us...:barf:

What will the police do if you don't have one - throw you in jail? Is "The Government" simpleminded enough to think that these ID cards won't be forged??

It's nothing more than an asinine pretext for more power and control by "The Government."

How about the police and judges trying to maintain anonymity. PO boxes and such will not be allowed on these cards. If you are an undercover cop and someone locates your real ID then they can locate your family. Even cops would be under the eye of big brother. For me personally, I think those that oppose such IDs should contact your representatives and voice your distaste for such communist crap. I refuse to vote for any candidate that will vote or has voted for this ID. There was never any debate or commitees issued to this Bill. The bill itself was attached at the end of a bill that was used to help Iraqi and Afghani soldiers and veterans. Sneeky GOP.

I'd rather deal with terrorists that I aware of and retain my freedom than to have those freedoms taken away a chip at a time by a government that claims it is taking those freedoms to protect me.

Under that pretense, I have 2 terrorist organizations to deal with.

Wasn't it Franklin that said something like ... 'anyone willing to give up their freedom for security deserves neither'?

Semper Fi!

Yeah, Franklin. I know I found a bunch of Gun- and freedom-related quotes by the founding fathers, and I though I bookmarked it, but I can't seem to find it again. :(

Not meant to be critical of anyone.....but, some of you are getting a little anal. If you have a SS card, a drivers license or military ID everything in the world is known about you. Many public / gov't departments sell your name to retailers, telemarketers, etc etc....I think its a grand idea and the new card should be the only identification you need to vote....IMHO

Heres a few of my favorite quotes---If I may.:)

"Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something."
-Henry David Thoreau

"They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right." --Ronald Reagan

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
- Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude
greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace.
We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. May your chains set lightly upon
you. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity
forget that ye were our countrymen."
- Samuel Adams

"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't
speak up because I wasn't a Jew. They they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came
for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then
they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."
- Martin Niemoeller, on the Nazi Holocaust

"What country before ever existed for a century and a half without rebellion? And what country can preserve their liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
--Thomas Jefferson

"In order to get power and retain it, it is necessary to love power; but love of power is not connected with goodness but with qualities that are the opposite of goodness, such as pride, cunning and cruelty". ? Leo Tolstoy

"We must all hang together, or most assuredly, we shall all hang separately." -- Benjamin Franklin

"Don't expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong." --Calvin Coolidge

Heres one for you DemoRATS!
"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." --John F. Kennedy

I have many more but Im sure nobody wants to read them all.:)

Franklin-"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Smart man. I was expecting fewer posts on this subject. I know that the majority of the folks on here are Republican, or at least have Repub tendencies, and knowing that it was a Republican Congress that passed this bill would lead more people to avoid discussing what your elected reps have done to OUR country.

I'm no democrat but I sure as hell am not a Republican. Repubs might allow me to carry my gun but soon enough all politicians are going to consider any armed individual a threat to the government. Unless of course you have your brand new National ID!

PAPERS, PLEASE...

Do you have a link to an article or the bill perhaps?

I am very against it. I see the logic in it but I also see the huge potential for abuse at the hands of government.

This is simply symbolic. We already have the SS card, birth certificate, drivers license, CCW, etc. If they need to find me, they can. This is just another fruitless waste of money.

I'm against this, for the same reasons as most of you, but it seems a lot of people view this as if it were something new for americans.
