My FIRST 1911 was a Schmidt-Rubin Model 1911 rifle.

That doesn't really count, though....

My first 1911 handgun was an early Springfield Armory 1911 A1 Milspec. Like that gun.

I've added two .45s since then, an S&W Model of 1917 first model Brazilian issue and a Smith & Wesson 4506-1.

Colt model 70 satin nickel combat Commander. Bought it used from my brother (it was his back up weapon) in 1973 and I'm still shooting it today.

Where are all the AMT Hardballers! ;)

Well, I'll have to add mine. Bought it from a private security guard outside of a gun show in Anchorage, Alaska in 1992 for $150 with 2 factory stainless mags. After pistol and cash changed hands he told me it was a "very dangerous gun". Got it home, did all of the safety checks. With pistol cocked and locked a pull of the trigger dropped both the thumb safety and the hammer! After a complete disassembly I found a bent sear pin. (Covina AMT's had fairly soft stainless steel parts.) Proceeded to replace the sear pin, hammer pin, extended thumb safety, extractor, firing pin, firing pin stop, and hammer strut with blued carbon steel parts, about $75, and throated the barrel using Jerry Kuhnhausen's 1911 bible. It will feed everything I have put through it, to include handloaded Speer 200 grain JHP ("flying ashtray") bullets.

I still have it to this day, and it is my SD/HD/truck gun. It ain't pretty but it runs well 24+ years later.

Dad had a mint looking Remington Rand when I was a kid. I shot it a lot growing up but when I was about 20 it got stolen. My first one was a Colt government model a few years later.

My first was an ODI Viking Combat back in the early '80s. ODI's claim to fame was that their guns came from the factory with Seecamp double action systems. I bought another one a few years ago in a fit of nostalgia, it was exactly as bad as I remembered.

Funny, I think that was my second "1911", again in "kit" form.
The ad for the frame said, "the last 100", but they looked more like the first.
Apparently, ODI was one of Caspian's early customers; the latter have come a very long way!

Springfield Armory M1911A1

mine was a SA, I refused to buy a COLT with the series 80 firing pin safety, I wanted a pistol as close to original or GI specs

Then why not have bought an earlier Colt, like for example a Series 70 Government version? Also, doesn't the SA 1911 model use a non-standard firing pin in that it has a smaller diameter? Anyway, the SA guns from what I have seen and shot were all really great 1911s. I have been wanting to grab one just to have it.

SA firing pins

nope, mines an early Springfield from the 1980's when all parts were still made to original size / specs.

The Colt series 70 has always been hard to find, even back in the 1980's, most people were not selling them and this was before the internet, plus I was looking for something closer to a military style GI model with the parkerized finish, I didnt want a highly polished blued M1911 with the extra firing pin block.

the only options were what you could find locally or at a gun show, and I was looking for something not too expensive as a starter, so I chose the Springfield, they were only around $375 back then retail prices.

The Norinco M1911's were only $259 retail

Still wishing I had stashed a few of the Norinco guns back in the day. The guns weren't bad really and inexpensive. Right there with all the other regrets of things I failed to keep when we sold the gun shop. :)

Norinco m1911a1

the Norincos were less than $200 wholesale, I remember the old ads in Shotgun news, if you buy more than 5 the prices were lower!

the typical gun show price on a Norinco was somewhere around $239 - $269 retail

WWII m1911a1

I remember the Old Sacramento Armory had a bunch of refurbished WW2 M1911A1's for only $299 - $329

but they were in very rough condition, the had been reparkerized, but you could still see how rough they were before they reparked them, you could see the heavy pitting, and worn out barrels, chipped sights, loose as a goose, and the original markings were very worn from getting sand blasted.

they were pretty much junk guns, I wanted something that I could use for regular range use in better condition, so I decided to buy a brand new manufactured M1911A1 for my shooter.

My first 1911 was some years back my wife surprised me with a Kimber tactical entry II for our wedding anniversary that year.. Still one of my favorite range shooters!!!

Does anyone think Glock inspires this kind of nostalgia? Reliving the moment you opened the plastic box, and your eyes first drank in that black polymer frame...seems unlikely. Though as it happens I do recall purchasing my first Glock. It's been a great pistol.

That said, I remember the day I purchased my first 1911. It feels like it was yesterday. But it was, in fact, around 4 years ago, so that feeling is off by more than 1400 days. She was an experienced STI Sentinel, having been in one previous relationship. I was a trembling, sweaty, love-sick first-timer. After filling out form 4473, which seemed like it would take forever, I plunked down my cash. I pondered briefly whether introducing a financial element might cheapen the relationship we were starting. The store owner heard me mutter this, and his eyes instantly narrowed to slits. I decided to think of the money as a reverse dowry.

I don't recall the trip home, though I'm certain I carried her over the threshold, as my parents had tried to raise me a gentleman. Our life together has had the usual ups and downs, but she has always performed her duties faithfully, and has comforted me greatly when things go 'bump' in the night.

Though I would never consider replacing her, I have to admit my eye has been wandering as of late. There's an absolutely stunning little SIG Scorpion down at the store...

How many rounds did you put through her pipe her first time? taking away her innocence? I hope she was well lubed in all the right places when you took her V card
