Most UNDERRATED handgun?

Ironically Spain's best two pistolmakers, Star and Astra, went tango uniform,

WOW. I didn't know about Star's demise. When? I had a Firestar 9mm before Glock came out with the 26/27, and the Firestar was a great little unit. Built like a vault, though heavy, and soft shooting. A great carry gun. Wish i'd kept it (come to think of it, my brother has it, unless he pawned it ;) hmmm)

Agree with the CZ line. That's changing pretty fast though as word gets around.

*For the last couple of years, the trend has been to Black plasitc boxy semi auto loaders.
That leaves lots and lots of pristine unloved older Smith and Wesson Model 19's sitting on shelves as trade ins for the more "modern" wunder-shooters.
My vote for most under-loved goes to the classic Model 19 square frame.

Ruger Auto-pistols... I had one, and wish I STILL had it... fine weapon for the price, and worth more than I paid, in fit and function!

Exactly how I feel about mine.

My votes based on experience:
-Ruger: mine was flawless. Shouldn't have sold it. Not one FTE or FTF in the 1000-3000 rounds I had it (I didn't count thus the wide range, most likely it was 2000-3000)
-Taurus: a long time ago they were crap but they have changed (unfortunately the new polymer framed pistols have resurrected the old reputation). The steel framed autos and the revolvers are great (know the steel framed autos on reputation/word of mouth, the revolvers from a Taurus 82).
-Charles Daly: Mine has a little over 1000 rds now (got it in November) with little trouble. Very accurate and very inexpensive (for a 1911 especially).

My votes based on word of mouth:
-Taurus steel framed autos: one of my next guns is the PT911.
-CZ: my next gun is a CZ75.
-Bersa: will buy in the next 6 months or so.
-FEG: same.
-Makarov: same.
-Rossi revolvers: they seem to be vastly improved.

Colt 1991A1...

...is definitely underrated, or is that berated? Even Colt fans bitch about the plastic MSH, trigger, and pins, which BTW can be changed out in a heartbeat...they'll cry about the "gargantuan" roll mark???...they'll soil their diapers over the fact that it doesn't cost enough like a Kimber, but will soil themselves again over the WAY OVERPRICED 1911 REPRO and say THAT's a bargain.

I've got a CZ-75B. Love it. But it has been posted about numerous times here. My S&W model 908, 9mm has had over 1600 rounds through it and has had no malfunctions. None. I've not seen it posted about here. It's my current carry gun. That can always change though, as I aquire more guns.

I have just been scanning the thread again, and I realized that
I hadn't put down my choices. So here they are:

1) the plain-jane Taurus PT92 /PT99
2) the new Kahr/Auto Ordnance plain-jane 1911A1 clones
3) S&W's Value series- 908,909,910,457
4) FEG's Hi-Power clones
5) the Makarov (nothing new there!)

ANM

CZs.

One of these days I'm going to have to pick one up, get a trigger job, maybe cut some checkering, aquire custom grips, and still spend less than many of the shelf production guns.

Any .22 - people put them down as crap for self defense, but most bad guys will still run from them rather then get shot. Better then nothing.

Most UNDERRATED handgun(s)?...in no particular order, here are MY nominees...
-NEW (i.e., recent production) Colt 1991A1
-Makarov
-CZ-75B
-Ruger P-95 and P-97
-S&W "Value Line" auto's
-Kel-Tec P-11
-Bersa .380 ....FWIW....mikey357

I would have to say FEG GKK 45 ,Pjk9hp, Llama MaxI-45,Makarov.
As for Ruger yes they are reliable but I dont support traitors
 so I dont buy them or S&W...

All these votes for CZ's and I hear nothing but good things about them. I wouldn't consider them underrated at all. The first 9mm handgun I shot was a CZ 100 and I loved it. I would vote for the Bersa and Firestorm line of handguns as the most underrated.

Steyr M Series.

Better fit and finish than most other polymer guns (better than Glock, SigPro, or H&K), great trigger (the new ones), very reliable, accurate, and around 400 dollars!

I know you can't get hicaps for them, but who cares? At 400 bucks, it is a fun range gun.

This is not an attack on Glocks, SigPros or H&Ks. (well, maybe on the H&Ks, they are realy overpriced and overated)

Historyman,

Yup, the bugs in the early model Steyrs caused sales to slack and the guns to stack up in warehouses.

Because of this, you can pick up a new one (with all the bugs ironed out) for fire-sale prices. Nothing like getting a $500+ gun for $400 and change.

Another victim of a similar situation is the FN FortyNine. You can find them NIB for under four bills; a real steal.
