Most overrated?

Hey Oris,

At least I know I'm not the only one thinking along those lines now.
HK USP does work for $600-$650, but CZ-75 does work at least that good for just $300-350 (and has much nicer
DA trigger, sorry, Shake).
I have no problem with that statement at all. I own a CZ75B and plan on owning at least two more CZs. CZs are tied as my second favorite pistols with every other pistol I own (H&Ks come first, then everything else is tied for second).

I agree that some guns are overpriced, but hey, what isn't overpriced? I'll continue to buy H&Ks because I know exactly what I'm getting every time. For me, they are worth what I pay for them.

Shake

Abominable

Defs 2 and 3 are qualitative. In order to objectively rate a handgun, or anything else for that matter, there must be agreed upon specific characteristics that can be quantitatively measured/analyzed. What characteristics are to be regarded, considered, or estimated in determining whether or not a specific model of handgun is over-rated?

Exactly. My criteria include aesthetics and ergonomics. Since the majority of the time I spend with a gun is NOT shooting, things like appearance and comfort are important. An ugly gun with a flesh pressing shape won't cut it on those scores no matter how accurate and expensive it is.

I also won't rate a gun highly if it takes a head-pat-tummy-rub routine along with a key or secret handshake to get it to fire no matter what its other assets are.

Glocks lose. 1911's lose. Anything with elaborate safetys loses. As a matter of fact, I guess they all lose except pretty, smooth, compact, light trigger, DAO striker fired pistols or some revolvers, and they're just in a category of being not necessarily overrated. Too bad there are so few.

Maybe I need to go after a Kahr MK9 or K9 in stainless. I wonder if they've smoothed out the slide release lever....

HK USP.

Definitely overrated, per the definition.

--

Before the USP came out I would have answered the Berreta 92.

The hype it received from being chosen as the Military's sidearm belies marketing genious. Oh, and "Gibson showcased one so I've got to have one fever" helped, too.

I suppose if the thread had suggested naming the firearm AND vehicle one finds most "overrated", it would give us a valuable additional perspective on the people posting on the subject.

The reason is that I find myself wondering if the same people mentioning the HK USP, also think BMW's are "overrated"

Added after Oris' statement below...

Bwahahahahahahaha !! :p

HOLY COW!!!

What are you saying? Now you wanna know who is behind opinions? "VALUABLE ADDITION PERSPECTIVE ON THE PEOPLE POSTING ON THE SUBJECT"!!! Who are you - CIA, KGB on just
HMSS (Her Majesty Secret Service)?

I think your idea got born because you didn't get it. This is fun gun talk between brothers, nobody cares who is driving what. BMW is nice for chick pick-up, that's true...

FWIW, I think Beemers ARE overrated... they won't run with my 'Cuda at the track, they won't off-road with my Jeep, they won't gas-squeeze like my Saturn, they won't corner with my Yamaha, and they won't haul like my Ram 4X4... and yet ONE decent Beemer costs more than all 5 of my vehicles put together... so, yes thay ARE overrated!

and your point was?

I still think Glocks (and Beemers) are overrated!

Well cripes, if HK USP's are going to get bashed, why not bash Sig's? I've heard plenty of horror stories on TFL alone, the rusting, the bad accuracy, etc.

Just a thought.

Ojibweindian,

I think that we're getting a little too deep into the subject. When
I started this thread, I said "overrated", and what I meant was,
what handgun do you think is regarded too highly for what it
does? That doesn't mean it's not a good gun, or even a great
gun. The Glock has been mentioned numerous times thus far, and
while it doesn't really turn my crank, I don't think I ever said it
wasn't a good gun; the same with the 1911.

As far as measuring the various characteristics in order to rate a
handgun, well that's fine, but it wasn't what I had intended. I had
envisioned something like two guys in a gun shop looking at a
pistol, when one asks the other what he thinks of it. The second
guy looks and says, "Ahhh, it's overrated.....". I mean obviously,
the characteristics of a gun will figure into that statement, but
I guess it was just to get an idea of what guns everyone thinks might be blown way out of proportion. "Sure, it goes BANG! when
you pull the trigger! But so does my ________. What else is so
special about it?"- that kind of a thing.

Let me suggest some criteria, in any order per rater preference:
  1. Price
  2. Function/accuracy
  3. Durability
  4. User-friendliness
  5. Workmanship
  6. Parts availability
  7. Customer support
  8. withstood testing from reputable org'ns(military or civilian)
    [/list=1]
Using only 2 criterion (i.e. Regard and Estimate) may not give the rater the entire picture.

Most overrated IMHO?

#1. GLOCK- Don't think it is as reliable or accurate as others. On the other hand, it is light and rugged, simple to use, and moderately priced. Notorious for feeding problems and jams. But from personal experiences with them, I don't like the looks or performance...just don't like them, plain and simple.

#2. 1911-They are classics and nice to play around with and modify. But they are expensive and more expensive to smith and modify. They do have alot of heroic life saving tales to tell esp in past war situations, but that's because they were pretty much the only pistol issued and carried then. Sigs, Glocks, Hk's, and other brands are much younger but I'm sure would have had much more tales to tell if they were issued and available then. 1911's are nice to look at, collect, and display, but don't think they have the same equality as the newer guns. They are excellent guns but again the topic is "overrated"! And their time has passed just like grandpa.

#3. Hk and Sig (tied)-My two favorite and preference, and I consider the top notch of handguns today. But they are so damn overpriced! Hk is very reliable and accurate esp for a polymer frame, but don't like the trigger too much, and again, is very overpriced. Sig is about the same! I find it the most reliable and accurate, but though not as overpriced as Hk, it is still pretty pricey. The features ont hese guns are awesome. Peeve for Hk is the trigger pull and blocky shape. Peeve for Sig is the mag capacity and not so well coatings and finishes.

Man, Whos Glock you been shootin? I have never seen a Glock jam. Again, with the exception of rediculously out of spec ammo both of my Glocks have been 100% reliable since they came out of the tupperware box. Now that I think of it, I have never seen a Glock jam, and that includes a few dozen abused range rentals that havent been cleaned since they left Smyrna. Mind you, my Glock didnt come with the factory option alter, but how anyone can say they are jam prone is beyond me. I have lots of different types and brands of handguns, and I'll admit that the only reason I got one in the first place was because it was the only viable 10mm platform for my needs. And thats what it boils dont to, get what works for you.

For me the most overated of all has to be the glock. It is not only overated but sorry to say extremely how shall I put this homely?

Glock "over-rated"?

Depends on who you hang out with, I guess.

If you grew up or got into handgunnery in the post-"U.S. Marshals"/Tommy Lee Jones era when every mall-ninja wannabe started sporting flashlight-equipped Glocks in tactical Israeli commando kevlar thigh holsters and ran around bragging about how the Glock'd shoot while entombed in concrete after being run over with a Main Battle Tank and still put 10 rounds into two inches at 500 yards, then yes, Glocks are overrated.

If you're older, and hang out with a bunch of shooter/competitor/collectors and notice the number of Glocks on their hips, it makes a nice statement for the ugly little things.

Not to brag, but to make a point: I have a carry gun cabinet that contains a custom 1911, a P7M8, a Springfield Professional, a few tricked-out *&* CCW wheelguns, a SIG P-226 Stainless, a Beretta 96D, a Performance Center PC-13, and other pretty high-end handguns. The fact that my Glocks get carried at all, when they're about the low end of those pieces on the price scale, says a lot about 'em. They're adequately accurate, very reliable, light, rugged, weatherproof, and damn near impossible to bond with.

I know people whose collections put mine to shame that still tote Glocks. Why? Because they're not "super" or "ultimate", they're just "very adequate".

Most overrated is tied IMHO:
Any 1911 you have to wait a year or longer for (regardless of manufacture or gunsmith) and anything made by H&K.

Most overrated : Hi cap mags...leos with hi caps have a history of shooting alot and hitting alittle.

Most underrated: Boiling oil from the cathedral parapets. Watch any version of "The Hunchback..." if you really haven't figured out crowd control yet.
