more on ammo shortage

Glenn: People can, of course, comment on whatever they like however it's worth understanding that the flippers would be put out of business immediately if the large retailers would simply raise their price to the market price. They cannot do this because a large fraction of the public would see them as evil since they do not understand the economics of the situation (or at least understanding hasn't seeped into their lizard brain). In reality the empty shelf is more damaging to the shooting sports etc than the high price and we are paying more than we otherwise would due to the time wasted in line, driving to multiple stores etc.

I would prefer if the retailers did this, honestly. I'd rather pay $25 for a box of cheap 9mm, when I need it, than to pay $13 a box for ammo I can never find.

Who was getting away with paying an 18 year old 2 bucks an hour just 8 years ago?

Who said it was 8 years ago? However, you would be surprised what you can get away with.

I prefer the flippers to have a moral epiphany.

Me too. I don't know how many times I read about Cheaper than Dirt raising prices to reportedly take advantage. No body forces you to shop there.

It does offend me when I visit a gun shop that is selling 510B's that are exclusively a Walmart product and I see them add $10 or more to the WM price.

All of which is completely arbitrary. The only price that matters is the price that people are willing to pay. If the promoters set their price too low than they guarantee the existence of scalpers just as surely as prohibition guaranteed the existence of bootleggers.
Wrong. People have only one butt. If you go in and buy far more tickets then you have butts you are artificially causing the event to sell out prematurely thereby securing the scalping effort.
(That’s the loathsome part, the artificial manipulation of availability and prices.)
Multiply that by 10-100 scalpers and the effect can be quite noticable.

The scalper is providing the valuable service of standing in line in place of those who have jobs.
Their simply buying up the tickets (ammo) en-mass before we can get there - see above.
It sucks, and their doing it for the sole purpose of preying on those who do get out and work a real job for a living.
Again, exactly the same as the ammo situation.

For the record, I dont have an issue with those who want to amass a nice stockpile for their own use - but hovering around Walmart just to buy it up and resell it at a profit is most certainly loathsome by any standard simply because if they left it alone it would still be there available a normal prices to buy whenever we can get there.

My local Walmart in SC hasn't been getting much in the way of ammo in on their truck. A buddy that works the gun counter did say they got in about 6 boxes of Remington 225 bulk .22lr the other day and it was gone before it even hit the shelves. Supposedly according to him there will be a new shipment coming in soon.

It's bone dry of .22 ammo around me not just long rifle but shorts and magnums as well.

There have been several complaints among many Walmarts across the country.... that the drivers, whse folks that load the trucks & know what stores they are going to, and store folks..... are buying the ammo up the second it hits the store, then reselling it for higher prices.

That's operating a business, and I would bet, the profits aren't being shown on their taxes. So, there are several things they could be nailed for. We have 'anti-gouging' laws, which they could also be nailed for.

Perhaps the IRS will begin to do some audits based on all the new ammo dealers out there. I know someone that got nailed over a flea market business.

I hear a lot of complaining about scalpers but what if a storm hit and I ran out of food and knocked on your door and you still had a weeks worth because you were smart or had the funds. Would you help me out? I doubt it! You would say you would but not. Because you're gonna help yourself. Basically same thing scalpers do. It's a chance- either way they're trying to help they're own. As bad as I also don't like it.

Keep this in perspective....its not food, an absolute necessity we're talking about here, just ammo and the irritation of not finding it in normal quantities at normal prices.
End of days you say? Need too feed yourself with your 22? A single box of bulk should take (literally) hundreds of small to medium critters.

If you showed up hungry you bet I'd feed you... several times if needed.

Does everyone also gripe about the gas company's screwing us over gas prices? What about our electricity prices keep climbing? Should I stop here or keep going? Yes people, some are hoarders and some are scalpers. Nothing we can really do about it and if we keep griping about this, who's listening??? Pay the high prices are don't! Bottom line is we should have learned the last four years if not maybe we'll learn after this time. I'm sure there will be tons who will be complaining the next time!!!

Dashund: What you're missing is that in order to maximize profits the scalpers must sell all of the tickets/ammo they bought up so the total supply hasn't changed. Imagine a simple case where the scalper is first in line and buys all 10 boxes of bulk .22 for $25/ea and then goes out to the parking lot and sells all 10 for $75/ea. If any of those people had gotten in line ahead of him they would have happily taken 3 boxes instead of one for that same $75 meaning more people would have left with nothing. The scalper has managed to spread the ammo around more evenly while also assuring that it goes to those who value it the most (as evidenced by their willingness to pay the most).

Please provide a link to the info supporting you statement about needing a license to sell ammo.

Don't attack me.
Don't misquote me.
I did not say anyone needed a license to sell ammo.
I say "may" because I really don't know. That is one reason for my starting this topic, to learn as well as vent.

Please don't laught at the source. Just read the article through. To summarize a couple of parts in the article. A hornady question and answer, and a reference to a 1973 shortage in toilet paper spurred on by Johnny Carson.

Maybe that is why I have horrible memories of a rough bottom as a 3 year old.

That just amazes me. But it makes sense I suppose. It only takes one person to propogate a crisis.

We have all heard of "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast.

What should really snub us should be that the people who want to promote gun control are laughing right now, watching us run around like a lot of angry ants.

Don't attack me.
Don't misquote me.

Rifleman, you're right that it's annoying to be misquoted or misunderstood; or to have what one says taken out of context, for that matter.

But -- and this isn't addressed only to you -- it isn't an "attack" when someone asks you to back up a statement with evidence; it's a request for more information, and around here, it's a regular part of a conversation. If people provide evidence to support what they're saying, it's a real contribution to the discussion, because everyone has a chance to learn something.

Good article on Infowars. I worked in a grocery store at the time of the toilet paper shortage. Trust me, the run on TP wasn't nuthin' like the run on sugar that took place before that.

People were coming in and buying whole carts full of nothing but sugar. I bet some of them still have a stock from that panic. And whats funny is that we heard later that there was never a shortage but a glut of sugar. So someone started the rumor that there was going to be a sugar shortage and people went nuts. But it got the glut of sugar sold.

I used to work in a mobile home plant. I loved to start rumors. Those people really went for them too. Once there was a group of future firemen in training being shown how to do a building inspection. There weren't dressed like firemen but were wearing polo shirts and khaki pants.

One of the women workers asked me who they were and what they were doing. I told her that they were buyers who were looking to buy us out, but not to worry. Only the higher ups would lose their jobs. It took about an hour before the rumor got back to my area. It also made it down to plant one and the whole place was buzzing with speckulation. I liked to have got hung when they figured out I was telling tales. Again.

So yes, one person can start a real mess if they try.

Bought 2 22's for X-mas and haven't been able to shoot them since - no ammo anywhere. Was at GM yesterday and saw a couple of guns that I would have liked but until I can buy some ammo I'm sure not going to waste my money on a new gun. The only ammo they had that I would have used was some Federal 38specials at $45 for a box 50! 3X what I used to spend.

For me I've been able to save my money - no ammo means no new guns and the money for both just stays in my pocket. I sort of hope that the ones with ammo end up broke.

Yep If everyone would have learned their lesson on the last scare or whatever you want to call it we wouldn't even be having this discussion right now.

I have ammo and I learned all I ever needed to know about human nature way back in 1968. I have given some ammo away to help some new shooters. I know for a fact that some training has been put on hold and some organizations have blown budgets trying to keep simple programs running. I also know that the ammo being purchased is not being used. I shoot one day each week and there are fewer shooters now than at any time I remember.

But who cars as long as you have ammo. Right?

Yes I got ammo but that means very little. Like you said there's very little shooters now and I'm sure less and less all the time. I'm LEO so I don't have to worry about my gun rights but what about my sons or daughters or their children when the time comes. I really think its sad about how humans can be so deceived about what's really happening or where this is really leading. Did you wonder as a young boy would we ever have a President such as this? What about getting elected a second time? Did you ever think the ammo shortages would ever take place or our second amendment would ever be a discussion as to be threatened ? Do you think it will actually stop here ? No, just getting worse I'm sure. And you got so many so blinded as long as they are OK. Truly sad.

Buckrub, nothing personal, but your gun rights are a job requirement. Give the anti's a few years, and your personal rights to own a firearm will be just as gone as ours will be. You will be allowed a very tightly controlled servivce weapon, and none other. Your job requirement will eventually disappear as well. The anti-gunners are drooling over the prospect of a gun-free nation, including law enforcement.

Of course, they can't explain how they will disarm the criminals....
