Maybe I need to rethink my faith in 45 acp

Love my XD45 compact in 45 acp. I carry the ten rounder IWB in Kydex because it conceals better, and I have two 13 rounders in a snappable dual belt patch. At night, I swap the 10 rounder for a 13 rounder, and if that doesn't get me across the room to the Benelli M1 Super 90, then the lord must be ready to take me.

I love the 45 round. I carried a Sig P228 for 15 years, And I still love that gun. But the 9mm feels like a 32acp to me after shooting the XD or a 1911.

If I have to be more discreet, and wear a sportcoat or suit jacket, I switch to my 4 inch Kimber Pro TLE/RLII. It rides flat to my body, tight and high, in an Alessi CQS (snap off) concealment holster, with a matching dual mag pouch.

When I carry the Kimber, I use 3 Virgil Tripp true 8 round Cobra Mags, stoked with 25 rounds of Federal HST altogether.

I do not feel undergunned.

When the Army took my M1911A1 away in exchange for the M9 I thought it was a good idea. After all, I could carry twice the ammo now. Now that I'm retired I carry a 9mm S&W M&Pc. My wife, who never liked the change carries a .45 Para Ord PDA. We both carry one spare mag. When I mentioned that I can carry 25 rounds of 9mm compared to only 13 of her .45 she said, "that's good...the way you shoot you'll probably need'em."... ;)

Sorry, I haven't read everybodies post's, but I bought a 9mm so I'm sticking to it.

Not to mention the 1000s of rounds I already have are paid for.

I did almost get bit, by the 1911's. But if it's power I want, I'll get a Dirty Harry gun, but in Ruger style.

If you are going somewhere where you think you may need more than 10-15 rounds of ammunition shouldn't you give serious consideration to not going there?

I understand the "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it" mentality but it seems to me that I would seriously consider the "it's better to avoid a gunfight than to get in one and win" mentality.

I don't have a CCW but I can't think of any place I go that I would feel the need to carry a bunch of rounds.

his idea of "having more ammo capacity" wont really work here where i live in CA. Since we cant have any magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, I rather have more powerful rounds

All of this talk about capacity, to me, truly needs only to be considered by those within LE fields. For the rest of us (civilians), does anybody honestly believe that they might become caught up in a firefight of LE-type proportions? Its been said before, most home defense (or personal defense, for that matter) firefights are over within seconds...not long, drawn out minutes. Would this really provide someone with enough time to blow through a 15-round mag while remaining accurate? Personally, Id be less concerned about "mag capacity" and more concerned with the ammo and/or mag itself. If any feel that more rounds in a mag = greater insurance..fine. However, I think more time should be spent becoming very proficient with a weapon and less time spent on sweating over capacity...IMHO.

I see the value of higher cap mags loaded with ammo such as .40 S&W...I really do. But, I see absolutely no reason to discard a lower cap mag, filled with "only" 7 or 8 rounds of .45 ACP, as inferior protection. I mainly address this at the HD and CCW crowd(s). Let the LE guys worry about mag capacity as they are far more apt to need such a thing vs the rest of us.

The .45 ACP is a proven man-stopper and I dont think that it would take more than 8 rounds to prove this fact to almost anybody who is unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of it. I personally think that it would be a mistake to dismiss this caliber simply based on limited mag capacity.

Old reliable. (Well, usually.)

Call me crazy but I trust my old reliable 45 cal. revolver, and six 255 grain semi-wadcutter Auto Rims. It's in a caliber that was good enough for dad and grandpaw, and it's good enough for me.

"the difference between 9mm and 45 is truly negligible
if the 45 got the job done, the same shots with a 9mm would have almost certainly done so as well"

I'm not so sure about that. Now, 9mm is a good weapon using hollow point rounds. With the 45ACP, even the fmj practice rounds are good manstoppers. I much prefer the 45, even though I have both 45 and 9mm.

And as far as capacity is concerned, my XD 45 is 13+1, which isn't shabby as far as round count is concerned. My Glock 30 has a 10 round standard mag, but with an adapter, I can use the 13 round mags, giving it the same capacity as my XD.

Times are going to get real tough with the economy falling, gangs not making money on drugs will be attacking innocents. The article is correct in my opinion that a 20 round 9mm will be the best weapon to carry.

Well....maybe. Depends on whether or not anybody plans on getting into a firefight with multiple gang members anytime soon (possible?...anything is possible; probable?....nah).

Besides, if the anti-gun crowds (under the Obama reign) have anything to say about it, we all just might be limited to 10 rounds or less anyway...legally speaking. If this happens, Im betting these high-capacity guns (9mm for instance) will mean far less than they do now. I think Ill stick with .45.

I carry a hi-capacity 9mm while my wife carries a .45acp...we both carry spare mags. We figure between the two of us we've got it covered... :)
