Justifying the Gun

stirring the pot

Hi Everyone, I'm going to stir the pot a bit to keep this thread going. Please don't take any of this personally. I'm trying to find some clarity.

I don't believe that people in gun friendly areas of the country don't fully GET the hostility that we gun owners can receive in the non friendy areas. I see it in the notification of police threads. In my area there is a good chance that a police officer sees all gun owners as threats and that only the police should have guns. Its a reflection of the society he comes from. For me I would be fired if I brought my gun to work even if it was left in my car. Just admitting being a gun owner puts you on a list of being a potential mass murderer. (Its one of 10 signs). I have to worry about people being "uncomfortable" with what I say and going to HR.

I feel with no evidence that I could be in a real jam if I make some sort of mistake with my gun such as letting it be seen "brandishing" or not following some bit of arcana from my states twisted gun laws. There are lots of threads in the hometown section of ar 15 com about what exactly is or isn't a CT legal assault rifle. I also feel that there is a good chance that if I had to use my weapon I could be charged and or sued or worked over by the system.

So I feel there is some risk to carrying a gun as well as not carrying one. As a prevous poster said "its the stakes that are high not the risk" because if you haven't needed a gun for 50 years the probability is that you won't need it for the next 50. But the risks can change as a neighborhood deteriorates or as a small town grows or as meth becomes a problem. Each person has to make their own assesment of them.

As for justification "I want and can afford it". How much more do you really need?

You are very probably correct on that.

For me I would be fired if I brought my gun to work even if it was left in my car.
That was true where I worked, but I am now retired.

I also feel that there is a good chance that if I had to use my weapon I could be charged and or sued or worked over by the system.
You could. You need to know the laws and understand them and comply with them. You have the right to use deadly force if it is immediately necessary to protect your life or defend against serious bodily injury in every state in the country; you may have a requirement to retreat before doing so; you cannot shoot a fleeing felon in most, and in those where you can, only under the rarest of circumstances--that's something to not do; you can use deadly force to protect property only in two states and in those, only under certain circumstances--again, something to not even consider, if you are at all risk adverse. You cannot use excessive force anywhere, and failure to recognize and prudently manage risks can lead to charges of criminal negligence or civil liability. Know the laws in your state and get some training.

On the other hand, if you don't have a gun to use, you can be killed or seriously injured or lose loved ones, should the unlikely but unfortunate violent attack occur.

This is not something to take lightly.

So I feel there is some risk to carrying a gun as well as not carrying one.

Yep.

I hope you find these helpful. I sure did.

This post is like the energizer bunny........it keeps going and going and going..... Seriously though, everyone should lighten up and realize that guns and the reason they buy them are as indivdual as opinions and *******s.....everyones got one. As far as getting personal is concerned, I like it. This is when the true personalities come out and the true measure of beliefs are open for everyone to see. Thanks for all the honesty! That's what makes this forum the best.

I think this one is ready for a lock.

Without naming names, let me just say that the point of a discussion forum is to discuss things. It stands to reason that in a forum with 80,000 members there will be a lot of differing opinions. If discussing differing opinions makes you angry or irate or if you can't manage it without angering others or making them irate then online discussion forums may not be an ideal place for you to spend time.
