If only (1) handgun?

Definitely a S&W Model 19 (4") .357 Magnum/38 Special ammo. Very accurate and versatile weapon for all types of use.

one gun

Have to go with Bikerbill: a 4" S&W 686+.
Quality, user-friendly and can do everything you need to do.

I've always thought a medium barreled .357 to be the best all-around handgun. Functionally I'd choose either a Smith or Ruger, but if I had to have just one, a Smith would be nicer to look at.

In light of our troubled economic times, I would have to vote for a fine American war horse like Smith & Wesson.... Not that I wouldn't any other time either.:)

Ruger, for their built-like-a-tank performance, and reliability.

But... that's just only because it's the only one I didn't have time to bury.

This is like picking your 1 favorite motorcycle or guitar, and selling the rest. Just plain evil.

Interesting dilemma though. Narrowing it down gets me back to the old question a friend has stuck in my skull; Is it a tool or a toy? In this here case "it" would have to be the most diverse tool for many situations. That would be the DW .44 CTG. Doubles as a boat anchor, meat tenderizer, wood splitting maul, deer smoker, monster persuader, engine cylinder hone, engine cylinder smoker, chainsaw, and drain pipe cleaner. Making it your CCW means you can stop going to the gym too. :D

Just ONE is fine as long as I can have just ONE for each distinct situation. Unless I'm going to the range I usually only have ONE on me. But that ONE depends completely on where I'm going. Hiking in the woods is completely different from going to the store. And even going to the store depends on what season it is.

So I kinda want a S&W 629 for hiking in the woods but for now my 60 covers that. Going to the store when I need a jacket is covered by my 1911. Going when a jacket would look funny is covered by ... Oops I have more than one pocket gun. I also have multiple guns that only see range use.

I guess I can't really do the ONE gun thing after all.
:)

I have many weapons but I have only one weapon that I would trust my life with.......my concealed carry Springfield XD40 sub compact.
