the first two do all handguns I thought of from mine were my 3" 29 and my 1076.but a good ol 1911 would work too.

I picked Colt since I have 1 Ruger .22, 1 CZ52, 1 Nagant and a who mess of Colts (3 revolvers and 4 semi-autos)

I have a sickness for the little horsie, sadly there is no cure.

Well, I keep a 4 in., GP-100, .357, by my bed side.
{even if I was half asleep I could work this gun and get the job done.}

But, if I had to have just one gun it would be my XD40 sub-compact.

I chose to refrain from entering an answer because if it came down to just one, it would be based more on it's features rather than a brand only.

This poll is really "What's your favorite brand" kind of thing.

For me, my favorite brand is Smith & Wesson, but if could only have one gun, it would be a 1911, and not necessarily a S&W one at that.

I imagine I'd probably take a S&W, probably a K frame with a 3" barrel. Useful, concealable, not dependant on magazines, etc. Although, I need more than that!

If I could only own one handgun it would be a 5" .357 Magnum.

I could conceal it and it would have a long enough barrel for hunting purposes, IMO. The cartridge is very versitle, which is a HUGE plus in my book. For carry I'd prefer a 3" but since I can only have one, I'll take the 5" thank you very much.

Bear in mind I'm looking at all the possibilities I would be able to use a handgun for, not just self defense against human aggressors. Having only one would be a real hardship to me, as I like my guns and like being able to carry what I want, depending on the situation.

If it was one handgun for self defense only I would be hard pressed to choose. It would be a tough call between the 1911, the High Power and the Glock. They each have attributes that I like.

I voted Ruger in the poll because of the ruggedness of their design. Finding a 5" GP100 is another story.

If I had to choose one gun, for all purposes, to carry for the rest of my life (this is how I read the question) I would carry a Springfield XD-45. I do not own one (yet!) but it's size is between the Ruger revolver I field carry and the Beretta .32 I concealed carry, it has a good magazine capacity, and stopping power sufficient for anything I would be shooting at in a defense situation. Additionally my Ranger buddy whose opinion I trust owns one and swears by it's reliability.

1911Sc

I'd vote my current favorite: Smith & Wesson 1911Sc (4.5" (Commander size)).
Reasonable weigh, shoots fine, conceals nice and it's a 1911. :D
