An attack on Iraq or Afghanistan might be treated as an attack on us due to our military's presence there, but what exactly is our policy if Iran nukes Israel?

Iran bought some SS-N-22 sunburn nuclear-capable anti-ship cruise missiles that are really scary. What exactly do we do if a country sinks one of our carriers? Do we escalate and send in nukes? If a conventional counterattack against Iran would give them time to sink most of our carriers and missile cruisers, would we really have a choice?
 
It is no great secret that we have bases all over Iraq. Why would they attack here when they can attack us in Iraq? We have over 150,000 people over there and they could drive a nuke truck bomb into any place we have built. Heck they have been truck bombing us all the time and who knows the next one might be a nuke.

Thing is we either have to grow a pair and fight or pull out all together. War isn't a halfway measure and once declared has to be fought to win. We are not doing that and since we are not we should pull our troops out. If you ain't going to fight then leave the feild. There is no sense in letting another man die over there if you don't play to win.

Either we kick the crap out of Iran or leave them to do what they want. Same as we do here with the illegals. Either all the world is subject to laws or none of it is. Since we no longer have laws here then why go fight in Iran?

The reciprocity doctrine is still in effect. If they attack us with nukes regardless of where, we will retaliate.

AFA Israel, they have nukes of their own and I'm sure they won't hesitate in repaving Iran. The Iranians know this as well.

After knocking up a pretty hispanic chick here in tucson (mehico's 3rd largest city) am I crazy to have the mind that we're all human? Since damn near the beginning of time have we not had a right to go where we please? I'm sorry for all the ranchers/hospitals/leos/justice not served etc...but is that not due to elected leaders not addressing an issue rather than a populace migrating to where the work is? To blame them is about as futile as expecting congress to function properly (everytime a white guy says 'illigal' a jumping bean stops jumpin :()

Slash, I respect what you are saying but I believe we are overlooking the real issue of Iran. Iraq or Iran either of them is a big fight but what are we as Americans fighting for? Are we fighting for America and its language, culture and borders or is it for oil? Iran is acting like a threat yet we have a huge threat walking across the borders every day. They are comming in by the millions and they are doing much more damage than those terrorist at 911.

I started the thread about Iran and you guys want to talk Iran but what are the REASONS to go there. Will the guys comming back have a job?

Well, here's a thought:

If ONE nuke could EMP a whole nation, somebody would have done it already.

As for Iran having "really fast torpedoes"...

We've got 'em too. And a whole slew of "really fast" weapons, railguns included.

One of the torpedoes we've tested doesn't even have an explosive charge...It's just 300 pounds of weight moving underwater around 200 miles an hour. From what I understand, the torpedo creates a bubble of air around itself to achieve higher speeds..It was in an issue of Popular Mechanics within the last year or two. I know that's pretty vague (sorry!).
 
I don't think most Iranians want their government rattling sabres. An Iranian nuclear attack on US territory or troops would sadly make the word Iranian synonymous with Dodo Bird.

Iran is a nice distraction, slap you on the back while your pockets being picked:D Watch how this becomes the overwhelming news and everything else is forgotten.:D When things get rough at home then give em an enemy to worry about till we get it the way we want it.

model, while you're no doubt correct in that it IS probably the media power's that be's intent to move the issue from getting rid of their cheap labor in favor talking about iran for a news cycle or 2...you were doing nothing but furthering 'their' cause by starting this obviously less important topic about iran...booya. Funny how the world works:D I didn't like Clinton at all and when he used war distractions to hide his flaws with Monica, the Republicans pointed it out with a furry (wag the dog). Yet here the Republicans give the nation away while our troops fight and die in Iraq and nothing is really said.

The country is being given away by outsourcing our jobs to other countries our to illegals they get to come here. To hide this and all the crap that goes on we have WAR in the headlines. Without showing what is being said compared to what is being done people will learn nothing.

And if they take out two carrier groups with conventionally-armed sunburn cruise missiles? What then? We could still bomb them with B2s from Diego Garcia, or from land bases, but the logistics become very much more difficult.

Until recently only relatively secure (as in self-confident) nations have had nukes and ballistic missiles (necessary to get the nuke up high enough and in view of the east and west coasts). With the potential for ex-soviet nukes to end up bought by who-knows-whom, and with some new countries getting nukes, the temptation for them to launch a nuke from an innocuous ship in international waters off one of our coasts may be too great some day. Particularly if the country does a good job of insulating the plan from being traced back to the country's government, we may not know for sure who to retaliate against. Was it North Korea? Or Iran? Or Al Qaida?

About the only person we couldn't blame it on (although the U.S. government would try) would be drug cartels, since they don't get paid unless the U.S. economy is in good shape.

Also, some traditionally stable states like China might get increasingly agressive to test us or to distract us from things like Taiwan. So add China to the list. And if a couple other countries have managed to buy black-market soviet nukes, any sort of nuclear attack on the U.S. could have half a dozen state actors behind it. None of them want us to identify who's behind it, because then we certainly will retaliate. But with the easy scapegoat of "terrorists", any number of less-scrupulous states might try to nuke us, given the opportunity.
